#abfav_lines_stripes These are sleeves to go over a plant-pot, very colourful and attractive to photograph. Love the dof here. ON TOP OF THE WORLD…

#abfav_3 #abfav_lines_stripes My beloved Flanders, it lies by the sea with the wide white sandy beaches, washed daily by the North-Sea, the blond dunes come next, for protection of the fertile flat lands behind them. These here are called De Polders, where you can stand and look as far as your eye can see, except for the odd gentle ’hill’. As you go further inland, the hills start to glow gently. I was driving, but a photographer’s eyes are always roaming, always hunting and alert! Saw those, looked for a safe place to leave the car and then started running up and down, clambering through nettles, over the green verges to find the right angle, the right light, those lines had to be right, I knew exactly the composition I wanted… this was it! Tee hee, life of a photographer, he? Have a wonderful day and thank you for your visit, Magda (*_*) IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) WINDOW in the WATER…

#abfav_lines_stipes It was a very hot day, we'd meandered the narrow small roads of Flanders, in an air-conditioned car, stopping whenever we saw something of interest. Waiting for 'better', evening, light, planned to be around Damme again. In the Middle-Ages, this used to be the harbour of Brugge, one of the wealthiest cities in the North. Due to silt the North Sea is now about 25 miles out, but Damme retained it's reputation for good food and beer, wonderful old buildings full of the history of revolutionary Flanders. Centuries later Napoleon saw the importance of the area and ordered a system of canals to be built. Today, whichever road you come from, if you want to get to Damme, you'll drive along those beautiful treelined canals. I walked across one of the bridges, a major junction, in Oostkerke, of those magnificent, unique tree lined canals. Behind me were syphons and sluices. A UNIQUE landscape that just goes on and on and on... A photographer's paradise! There is a silence and a peace there that the rustling of the majestic Poplars even enhances. I saw these reflections in the water and I saw a cathedral window... I wish you all the very best, may your wishes come true, and thank you for all your kind words, time, comments and faves. Very much appreciated. DONE FOR THE DAY…

#abfav_lines_stripes STREAKY SUNSET. The sun was fast dropping, I was on my way home after a hectic day shooting a 10 hr wedding. I desperately needed to unwind, what better way, he? By the sea, on the beach and a wonderful sunset? Take some more shots!!! As I used 400 ASA film, I pushed the limits, keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for a fantastic result. The sun painted the sky and beach in a golden glow, it got too dark I was done for the day! BONFIRE-NIGHT...

TONIGHT 5 November.... Guy Fawkes Night 5 November is Bonfire night in England. Remember, remember, the fifth of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot. We see no reason why Gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot!" Words to Guy Fawkes rhyme. In November 1605, the infamous Gunpowder Plot, the failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament by Guy Fawkes along with a group of conspirators, took place. The story is remembered and celebrated each November 5th when 'Guys' are burned in a celebration known as "Bonfire Night". Huge parties all over, in every city and town, villages and parks, the spires are ready, the fireworks waiting to be lit. Preparations for Bonfire Night celebrations include making a dummy of Guy Fawkes, which is called "the Guy". Some children even keep up an old tradition of walking in the streets, carrying "the Guy" they have just made, and beg passers-by for "a penny for the Guy." The kids use the money to buy fireworks for the evening festivities. This image was however taken in Belgium, and the pyrotechnics courtesy of a Spanish group, music and fireworks amongst the people, never seen anything like it! Keep safe, and have a great day, Magda, (*_*) Just adding this note for those interested in the techy stuff; this was taken on my Nikon F4, on 400asa film, because I loved grain, low light, handheld. I am such an impulsive/ intuitive photographer and after all the years, I do things by 'feel', like driving a car, you know what I mean, but I'll try. I'd say f 4.5, 1/30 of second. Of course on a tripod and with cable release. I was way behind the crowd on a small hill, with a long lens probably between 200/250. The result also depends on the film and sensitivity. Photographic film is a sheet of plastic (cellulose acetate) coated with an emulsion containing light-sensitive silver halide salts (bonded by gelatine) with variable crystal sizes that determine the sensitivity and resolution of the film. Colour film uses at least 3 layers, I now use film with 4. Dyes added to the silver salts make the crystals sensitive to different colours. During development, the silver salts are converted to metallic silver, as with black and white film. The by-products of this reaction form coloured dyes. The silver is converted back to silver salts in the bleach step of development. It is removed from the film in the fix step. Hope that helps, Magda, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.com IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) MOOD INDIGO…

#abfav_monochrome When I get that mood indigo, I could lay me down and die. Beautifully sung by Nina Simone and others... This is my son, then 19 and lovesick as you can only be at that age? He became quite detached and solitary for a while. We had gone for a drive, through woods and arrived at this old military airfield, He just walked over and stood like this for quite some time, not moving, I ached for him, he was hurting and there was very little I could do, except… be there. The whole body language and stance languorously emanated sadness and loneliness. A couple of years later he met the right young woman and they are happily married, I wonder if he even remembers this? Taken with the Canon AE1, in b&w and tinted Indigo in the darkroom. Have a lovely day and thanks for your precious time, Magda, (*_*) Have a wonderful day, filled with love and beauty, M, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY MY IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.com Please do not use this image on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved

THE UNLIKELY COACHMAN…

FOR MOVEMBER. Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide. I now have taken on the challenge, one photo each day: a month of men with moustache and beard, LOL, HELP… At the end of the resting row of horses, carriages and coach drivers, I spot another reader. No hat, he doesn’t look like a coachman? Then I ask myself, what does a coachman look like? I have seen plenty, and this one is the odd one out, more the arty or professor type? LOL Amongst the hustle and bustle of all the tourism on the market, he is sitting there again, completely absorbed in his newspaper, lost to the world around him. The Coachmen take advantage to do various activities, as you see. Some get together for a chat, some check their phones, others check their gear, a few read… This is all after taking care of their horses! They come first. I observed how well the horses were cared for in the special 'stop'. Halfway through each ride horses make a stop and the horses are fed, they get water and a rest. That is at the Beguinage and then here, on the market. Some coachmen work every day, others work only two days a week for tours. Their horses are not working every day: most horses work every four days. Some coachmen work the whole week, with often six horses to do the work or the tours. To take a romantic trip through the heart of Bruges along the canals, over the typical small bridges, over the famous cobblestones on the rhythm of the hooves of the horse, one of the most famous sounds of Bruges. THE WHITE UMBRELLA…

#abfav_white BRUGGE… had parked the car and took a shortcut through ‘back streets’, no tourists, quick access, the ways I used with family, born and bred from Brugge. We heard thunder, and it was closing in, we hurried, the sky still blue but big cloud-heads appearing now and ever more thunder… we were quite confident of escaping it, but no, on the market, we only just had time to dive into the entrance of the Belfry, and the heavens opened, lightning lit up the darkened, almost flooding market. People still rushing in, even WITH an umbrella, little use as they were, the rain came from all sides it seemed. The coaches with their passengers stood waiting, the horses were nervous, I just HAD to eternalise the eerie scene. The pouring rain, the bubbles, the fighting clouds silenced those around me. Then, after 10 minutes, as sudden as it started, so sudden it stopped. People smiled, relieved, and continued their day, so did we. Yes, we do have these moments in life? OLD BRUGGE… in Sepia

Even moodier! Now for something completely different… We were in Brugge, had parked the car and took a shortcut through ‘back streets’, no slow-moving tourists, quick access, the ways I used with family, born and bred in Brugge. It brings back so many memories, so many come alive again, walking with me. We heard thunder, and it was closing in, we hurried, the sky still blue but big cloud-heads appearing now and ever more thunder… we were quiet confident of escaping it, but no, on the market, we only just had time to dive into the entrance of the Belfry, and the heavens opened, lightning lit up the darkened, almost flooding market. The coaches had been uploading their passengers, the horses were nervous, the sound of hooves pounding, the heads shaking... then they were moving away, I just HAD to eternalise the eerie scene. It was a real throwback, I became this gangly blond girl again, dancing along, holding the hand of my granddad, and of my dad, so many of my family, all taking care of me… The pouring rain, the bubbles, the fighting clouds silenced their voices. I also became very quiet… Then, after 10 minutes, as sudden as it started, so sudden it stopped. People smiled, relieved, and continued their day, so did we, the moment gone, but the impact still there. Yes, we do have these moments in life? I think I captured it perfectly, the OLD Brugge. WE WERE IN BELGIUM…

#abfav_yellow And THAT image proves it!!! LOL Always my FIRST meal when I go back. Yes, my dear friends, Belgium is NOT just famous for its chocolates… but we have the BEST chips in the world, hihi, some even say we, the Belgians, invented them, oohh yes! You’ll find stalls and ‘fritures’ everywhere, you turn a corner and suddenly that tantalising sweet aroma tickles your nostrils, your mouth begins to water, irresistible, it is a cultural experience. That, with a cool beer and some mayonnaise (out of a jar, nono, NOT home-made), heavenly. I always say, when I eat unhealthy stuff (what I call yuk) then I go All the way= double yuk (two portions of the sauce), no, NOT of the chips, I couldn’t, you have to savour them… Hope this made you smile, have a fun day and thanks for visiting and everything, Magda, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to purchase, visit here: www.indigo2photography.com IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) ATOMIUM, BELGIUM… 21 JULY

On this, the National Day in Belgium, the Atomium depicts nine iron atoms in the shape of the body-centred cubic unit cell of an iron crystal, magnified 165 billion times. This image was taken in Brussels, it is the iconic Atomium with the tricolour, black, yellow and red, flying proudly on top. The Atomium was originally constructed for Expo '58, the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn with interiors by architects André and Jean Polak, it stands 102 m (335 ft) tall. Its nine 18 m (59 ft) diameter stainless steel clad spheres are connected so that the whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Tubes connect the spheres along the 12 edges of the cube and all eight vertices to the centre. They enclose escalators and a lift to allow access to the five habitable spheres which contain exhibit halls and other public spaces. The top sphere provides a panoramic view of Brussels. From June 2016 the law is allowing pictures of the Atomium and other public buildings under copyright, to be legally distributed! Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide. I now have taken on the challenge, one photo each day: a month of men with moustache and beard, LOL, HELP, will I make it? A HAT and a haunted look We live in strange times, good on the one hand, great new technology... supposed to keep us MORE in contact??????????? What I notice is an enormous ALIENATION amongst people... less and less caring, in a self-centred society where people get lost... I can see it in their eyes... and it pains me... Give some to a charity and your conscience is salved? I don’t think so. Normally I refrain from taking this kind of image... but I liked his lovely face. MORE THAN EVER: Lead and enjoy a good life, do and say things that enrich... and do not forget to tell the people close to you, how much you love them! I now have taken on the challenge, one photo each day: a month of men with moustache and beard, LOL, HELP, will I make it? On the ‘bucket-list’ was a shoot with a glass blower, I had approached Marcel Vlamynck and he graciously agreed to open his atelier for us. We were thrilled and really enjoyed the experience. Here he shows off one of his pieces, which we bought and now every day enjoy in our home. I wish you all a very good day and thanks for all your kind words, time, comments and likes. Mr MANDOLIN-MAN...

FOR MOVEMBER. Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide. I now have taken on the challenge, one photo each day: a month of men with moustache and beard, LOL, HELP, will I make it? It is interesting to photograph people, especially musicians, OBSERVE THEM FIRST, it is so much about HANDS and FEET! Before I photograph, I observe... for quite some time, and THEN: I SEE, what is for me, the essence of what I am experiencing. Duo Magit (MAndolin&GITaar) at work again, this time it was 'unplugged', at the home of one of them, 10 years later! Another amazing afternoon, plenty of music and a lot of laughter. Like so many photographers (and I'm one of them) hide behind their camera, these two were hiding behind their instruments. The weather was lovely, the concert took place in the garden. Mr mandolin-man came in, the private concert started, I think by the time we finished, they'd gone through their whole repertoire again! This is the Mr Mandolin man, a lovely man, he plays many different string instruments, was a bit peeved when was of the strings sprung and ... he hadn't brought a replacement, oops. it didn't bother me. Another lovely experience! FOR MOVEMBER. Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide. I now have taken on the challenge, one photo each day: a month of men with moustache and beard, LOL, HELP… Yvan, the artist, during a photoshoot where he impersonated different characters, here with a French alpino beret. He spent a lot of time in France over the years. As a young artist, he transformed a van into a camper van, drove all through Europe and North-Africa. When he saw something inspiring, he’d climb on top of his van and paint until it was finished or dark. In the South of France he encountered a French lady of the aristocracy, she taught him a lot about pigments, making your own paints, painting with your hands and palette knives. He would tell me about the gorgeous smells of linseed oil, resin, right down to Indian cow’s urine. A joy to have in the studio. From the series: Ex- and impressions. #abfav_2_together_theme Willem Vermandere is a famous and much celebrated Belgian Artist. My friend is a sculptor, singer-songwriter, musician, writer, poet and painter, but also a wonderful philosopher and raconteur. We always enjoy a get together when we visit the Continent, this time no different! Here, after a whole animated discussion about why we do what we do, how to do it well etc... we walked to the place where he's working, on a set of smaller works in CARRARA marble and we came back to our earlier conversation, about PASSION!!! #abfav_monochrome Willem Vermandere is a famous Belgian Artist. We always enjoy a get together when we visit the Continent, this time no different! WHAT MADNESS…

WAR… Today, the centenary commemoration of the beginning of Passchendaele Battle… 100 days, deadly: the guess is 260,000 casualties on each side… A whole generation of men, gone… NEVER will I understand, neither reason nor motive good enough for war, ever! The Battle of Passchendaele, also known as the third Battle of Ypres, took place between 31 July and 6 November 1917 in Passendale, West Flanders during the First World War. The Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing commemorates those of all Commonwealth nations, except New Zealand who died in the Ypres Salient and have no known grave. Here you are surrounded by thousands and thousands of names, overwhelming! In the case of the United Kingdom only casualties before 16 August 1917 are commemorated on the memorial. United Kingdom and New Zealand servicemen who died after that date are named on the memorial at Tyne Cot Cemetery. I grew up in Flanders, surrounded by those sad memorials. Thank you, M, (*_*)

Les DUNES BLONDES de MA JEUNESSE...

Helmet or lyme grass (Ammophila arenaria), also known as dune grass, is a perennial plant belonging to the grass family (Poaceae). It is a pioneer plant that is important in the formation of dunes. The plant produces long rhizomes and where these rhizomes to come into contact with light, it creates a new shoot. To capture the sand seawall on the coast of Belgium, they planted helmet. The meter long roots of the plant search the depths of the freshwater line which is a few meters below the dune, but above the salt water in the sand. The plant protects itself against salt water through a symbiotic relationship with a special mould to its roots, which regulates water and salt supply to the plant. BEACH-LHOUETTE...

#abfav_shadows_silhouettes_theme Typical for a summer's eve on the beach, one man, his dog and a seagull. The sun was fast dropping, the man seemed in a hurry. I was on my way home after a hectic day shooting a 10 hr wedding. I desperately needed to unwind, what better way, he? Take some more shots!!! SEA-LHOUETTE...

#abfav_shadows_silhouettes_theme Again taken from the terrace on the 10th floor, the penthouse overlooking the sea, where we lived. I grew up on the Coast, always loved the sea... in any season, under any circumstances, cruel as she could sometimes be... It was a golden sunset, that reflected beautifully on the wet beach and the calm ebbing sea. A shrimper had been trawling the heavy net on foot for some time, his mate helping him to empty the catch after each trawl. It is a dying pass-time! They were done for the day, rolled a cigarette and had a lively chat with lots of gesticulation and pointing. Ah well, it was a good catch, for all of us. I CRIED FOR YOU...

#abfav_films_songs I Cried For You by Katie Melua youtu.be/koeZGaFEnHc You're beautiful so silently It lies beneath a shade of blue It struck me so violently When I looked at you But others pass, they never pause To feel that magic in your hand To me you're like a wild rose They never understand why I cried for you When the sky cried for you And when you went I became a hopeless drifter But this life was not for you Though I learned from you That beauty need only be a whisper I'll cross the sea for a different world With your treasure, a secret for me to hold In many years they may forget This love of ours or that we met They may not know How much you meant to me I cried for you And the sky cried for you And when you went I became a hopeless drifter But this life was not for you Though I learned from you That beauty need only be a whisper Without you now I see How fragile the world can be And I know you've gone away But in my heart you'll always stay I cried for you When the sky cried for you And when you went I became a hopeless drifter But this life was not for you Though I learned from you That beauty need only be a whisper That beauty need only be a whisper It is not always easy to be back after the fantastic time we had in my native country. The feelings and emotions are very mixed, glad to be home but missing so my dear family, friends old and new. OOOH how I miss my beloved Flanders! Yet I also love my adopted country, Yorkshire/England. That day we meandered through it, arrived in the area of Damme, Oostkerke, with its endless tree-lined canals, when finally the weather broke, the long promised rain started to fall, the sky cried, gently at first then it poured, ( at last I could test if it was true what they claim about the Nikons being water-sealed, tee hee). I just HAD to take a shot of this unique landscape, but more about that with the next... Toned Indigo for mood. I wish you all a lovely day and thanks for your visit, M, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.com Please do not COPY or use any of my images on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved

MY BELOVED FLANDERS…

#abfav_lines_stripes On our way back from Denmark… After enjoying Breskens, where we had a super meal of a giant sea-platter, we drive on, and very soon, we cross the border into Belgium. We are back in my beloved Flanders. Our welcome is this golden gift. It is also the flat lands, I find it less ‘austere’ and rigid than the Dutch flat lands, like friendlier? The sun is falling, the land ready for the night, we get closer to our destination now. LE PLAT PAYS…

#abfav_films_songs Qui est le mien. Song by Jacques Brel https://youtu.be/3H48pEPV4Z0 A FLANDERS' SUNRISE Flanders, 5 in the morning, the cool, fresh air fragrant with the promise of a beautiful day. I walk barefoot in the dewy grass, as the night-clouds drift away, chased by the new dawn, there's just enough light to handhold my first image (See previous) of the day... I look around, deeply breathe in the cool air, birds are calling, I take my second image, this one. Typical in Flanders are the willows to mark the boundaries, often water ditches. They are to keep the 'Lowlands' dry... Pruned in a unique way, they form a head that gets wild every year, the trunk grows gnarly and stumpy, we call them 'knot-willows’… Have a great day and thanks for your comments and visits, M, (*_*) FOR ALL THE LOVELY DETAIL AND THE GREAT EXPERIENCE: view LARGE For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY MY IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.com IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) OMINOUS in HOUTAVE...

#abfav_yellow Between Ostend and Bruges, behind the blond sand dunes, just off the Old Road, there is this village, Houtave... Medieval and traditional in concept, the church in the middle, surrounded by the graveyard, then the circle of houses with the happy red roofs, and wider still the farms. When we were there the land was lying, spent, just stubble left after the harvest of waving golden cornfields, the ominous sky more and more pregnant with rain, the sun still in and out, behind us, brushing in patches of light. So typical, so unique, so beautiful, that flat Flanders that holds such a special place in my heart. L'ETE INDIEN…

#abfav_films_songs https://youtu.be/BT_ZQdY0h8o by JOE DASSIN THE RUSTLE OF THE REEDS... By Monday the weather had gone blustery, a North-Wester was snapping, we enjoyed another drive along small winding roads in the country-side of Le Plat Pays, my Flanders. It is so fabulously flat and far-stretching, the meadows and fields seamed off by the water-sucking willows, pruned again and again in their particular way, so that they form a 'knobbly' head. The dividing water canals are festooned with waving slender reeds, they inspired many a poet, none more than Guido Gezelle: O 't ruisschen van het ranke riet ! (loosely translated in English... O 't rustling of the slender reed! O to know your sad song! When the wind carries you over And bowing moves yours stalks You bow, humbly silently down, Rise and humbly bow again and sing, all the while bending, the sad song That I love, O slender reed! ) This is very Flemish! The waving reeds... IN BRUGES…

#abfav_films_songs “In Bruges” is a 2008 British-American black comedy crime film written and directed by Martin McDonagh. The film stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two Irish hitmen in hiding, with Ralph Fiennes as their boss. The film is set and was filmed in the Belgian city of Bruges. Probably the most ICONIC view in Brugge, the city where I was born. View from the Rozenhoedkaai, looking up at the Belfry, standing tall on the Market-square and one of Brugge’s three proud towers seen from all around. LOL, I could also have called this: Blue skies?
