IWD...

IWD... www.youtube.com/watch?v=PF7cLnijKBs James Brown & Luciano Pavarotti - It's a Man's World... beautiful... International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day is marked on March 8 every year. It is a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements. Now you all know that I am a passionate photographer. One of the reasons why I love it is that it can be so versatile, it is NOT just working in a studio, it opens all kinds of experiences, because of my job, I had a (rare) insight into many different and more unusual lives. Examples include: *the inside world of BBC, both radio and TV and its people there, the introverts and the extroverts, I'll let you figure out who's who...… *Universities, the professors and their advanced research and researchers… *I experienced the tensions and vigilance on the bridge of a huge Ferry in one of the busiest sea-lanes in the world, the captain, his crew and their advanced technology... also on a ferry-catamaran *A small shrimp trawler, the hardship of fishing during the night, managed by a skipper and his mate… *A veterinary surgeon performing complicated operations… *Ballet dancers in their studios, showing us the tough regime and performing their art… *A brief glimpse into the interesting world of travellers… *The behind the scenes of a casino, where you really get the sense of drama that goes on there often, it’s a place of ‘mysterious mood’ to me… *Several times travelled through Europe, in a truck, a world within our world… a world people do not know much about, day and night, monotonous drives on looooong stretches of road, and the people that transport EVERYTHING we have in our homes *As a woman, to visit and get the tour of a mosque, being shown and everything… *A lady at her home, mother and wife, waiting for a ‘better’ day, so that I could take portraits of her, with her boys, her husband… because she was terminally ill with cancer… *The world of horse-breeders, farmers, bikers, fish-smokers, painters, glass-artist, sculptors, singers, actors, business entrepreneurs, politicians and so many more... * I photographed the new-borns, the young, the’ in love’, the sad and lonely, the happy, the old, been in the presence of world-famous people… people are people to me… I enjoyed it… Yes, I enjoy it, in case you had not received that message yet, lol! WEEPING VEILS...

Fuerteventura. Very much a Volcanic island, part of the Canary Islands. Most of the drinking water is desalinated sea water. Water is safe for cleaning teeth and washing food, it is very high in mineral content and very precious on the island. For crop irrigation they use what little a year they get, the island gets about 120 mm per year it gets preserved in storage in underground reservoirs and is pumped up with a "Water Pumping Windmill" or wind pump, the rest is agua recyclado, i.e. treated sewage. The photograph is a detail of one of the huge artificial waterfalls at the hotel, it is my artistic interpretation of it, that's how I saw it in my head. We were there on assignment, but their is always the bonus of some 'free' time. Hope you're day is cool and thanx for the visit, M, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk Please do not use this image on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved

I CRIED FOR YOU

I Cried For You Katie Melua You're beautiful so silently It lies beneath a shade of blue It struck me so violently When I looked at you But others pass, they never pause To feel that magic in your hand To me you're like a wild rose They never understand why I cried for you When the sky cried for you And when you went I became a hopeless drifter But this life was not for you Though I learned from you That beauty need only be a whisper I'll cross the sea for a different world With your treasure, a secret for me to hold In many years they may forget This love of ours or that we met They may not know How much you meant to me I cried for you And the sky cried for you And when you went I became a hopeless drifter But this life was not for you Though I learned from you That beauty need only be a whisper Without you now I see How fragile the world can be And I know you've gone away But in my heart you'll always stay I cried for you When the sky cried for you And when you went I became a hopeless drifter But this life was not for you Though I learned from you That beauty need only be a whisper That beauty need only be a whisper It is never easy to be back after a fantastic time we had in my native country. The feelings and emotions are very mixed, glad to be home but missing so my dear family, friends old and new. OOOH how I can miss my beloved Flanders! That day we meandered through it, arrived in the area of Damme, Oostkerke, with its endless tree-lined canals, when finally the weather broke, the long promised rain started to fall, the sky cried, gently at first then it poured, (testing if what the claimed was true? D200being watersealed, tee hee). I just HAD to take a shot of this unique landscape. What you see is three rows of trees on the left, the verge which is the dyke of the canal, on the other side, two more rows; this is in West-Flanders, past Damme near Brugge. Instead of getting better, the weather got steadily worse, I could not risk my equipment out of the car anymore, but we were there NOW!!! So, Paul and I tried to coordinate the window wipers with me shooting… we started to giggle at the situation, which made it a fun experience, but not easier! There were some raindrops (my camera kept focusing on them!) on the windscreen, but I rather like that, it was very much the atmosphere, also what I saw then and what I feel now, I miss it… Toned Indigo for mood... I AM FEATURED HERE NOW, NEW: www.paranoias.org/2012/01/flower-photography-by-magda-indigo I wish you all the very best, may your wishes come true, and thanx for all your kind words, time, comments and faves, Very much appreciated. THE LONE 'ZEN' TREE... YORKSHIRE

We walked through a beautiful park called 'Golden Acres' when I saw this tree; everything was green, including the trunk of the tree, from the recent moisture and moss. It had something of the Japanese drawings, I saw it in nothing but B&W, I saw this image like this here in my mind before I even took the photo. Apparently that's what makes it art... if it is a preconceived idea, the rest is photojournalism? Must find that article and refer you to it! LOL! DESOLATION, WINTER IN YORKSHIRE...

A deep frost, a long Winter! Dry stone walls are commonly used as field boundaries in the highlands, such as the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. A dry-stone wall is a wall that is made up of stones skillfully placed one on top of the other with no binding agent to hold them together. The wall is held up by a special construction method and by its own weight, and the stones must be carefully selected by shape to ensure that they have a large contact surface area with their neighbours and so do not slip. Containing sheep in specific fields is the main reason for the existence of dry stone walls. Also, they are a thing of beauty, they last much longer than 'wet' walls, and they're safer than fences when it comes to herding in wildlife. Besides, what else is there to do with all those stones cluttering up the countryside? The moors are bleak, the higher you go the less vegetation there is, nothing to stop the wind, wet walls would not stand a chance, but now the wind just ‘whistles’ through the stones! BIRCHES in AUTUMN...

PLEASE READ THIS: MY PHOTOS ARE ONLY FOR SALE DIRECTLY FROM ME! Went for a walk in the park... It was a fine day, cool, nearly cold, but with sunlight that still could warm. Like silver birches in a woodland; the appearance of the bark subtley changes depending on how the light catches them, echo-ing woodland seen in early morning light, full day light, dusk and night. DARK WINTER WATERS...

PLEASE READ THIS: MY PHOTOS ARE ONLY FOR SALE DIRECTLY FROM ME! I had been feeling a damp, drizzly November in my soul, so I headed to the woods. It was a fine day, cool, nearly cold, but with sunlight that still could warm. The weeds now bowing and dark; there was a cidery smell of decay in the air, the dark winter waters lapping high. I relaxed, breathing in deeply; a little light spilled just enough to make this image possible, I tingled and warmed up inside, I’d found my image for the day. It is a colour photo, not toned B&W. FROM A COW with an ITCH?

Just some 'cow hairs' stuck to the barbed wire. Some cow must have had a good scratch. There are hundreds of small cobwebs, this pluck of hair must have been there some time, a haven for insects. I love the simplicity. I like this type of image, one out of my 'private' collection. READ MORE HERE, new Blog: magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2010/01/about-innovative-creativ... OF CUBES and LIGHTS...

For December I'll upload images to do with the festive season. This is going to be many different things... A cube imprisoned by lights, within a cube, on a light cube. Taken in the studio with only ambient light, no ‘star effect’filters used, comp in camera. I'm enamoured with glass, light, reflections, for all the unexpected light refractions... Hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I did making them. Thanx, M, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) OIL AND VINEGAR...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! Another lighting exercise. From the series Circles and lights. I saw how many round objects there are in our home, I've had plenty of time to think and be creative in the studio once more. Glass is one of the most difficult substances to photograph, always and even more under 'studio' conditions; my challenge is to use the reflections in a positive manner so that they add to the image. I love using different oils and vinegars in the kitchen, so over the years these glass beauties have now become part of a collection, the first was the 'ball' cruet one in front, oil in the centre, vinegar in the 'outside'! Sometimes I just 'feeeeeeeeel' like this, an image in b&w... I love the subtle tones, all the varied tonalities, that give the texture, depth and form, the delectable shapes accentuated, extracted and emphasized without the colour. Don't you agree? I wish you all a sweet day and thanx for your visit, always welcome, Magda, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY MY IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) LIGHT IN A BAG...

WARNING, THESE ARE SPECIAL FIRE-RESISTANT BAGS, especially made for candles!!!! For December I'll upload images to do with the festive season. This is going to be many different things... I'm always on the look-out for special things, these came in small (this is a small one), medium and large. On a Summer's night, you could put them in the garden, make a path, be creative... My love for candles go back to my childhood, adore their very special light, the flickering. Well, I hope you like it too, have a wonderful day and thanx for viewing and commenting, always appreciated, Magda. THE EMPTY CHAIRS... and the deep shadows...

#abfav_shadows_silhouettes_theme In remembrance of another dark day in ALL of our history. Many a chair... empty, a space just filled with air and dancing dust particles in the light, where once a loved-one sat and laughed? The pain of loss is ever-lasting, something you never get 'used' to, just learn to live with it because you have to... Taken in the church on the Mont Cassel in Northern France, the day after we visited a friend for the last time... Enjoy and make the BEST of every day! SHIMMERING ANGELHAIR...

For December I'll upload images to do with the festive season. This is going to be many different things... This was a difficult neg to print in the wet darkroom, but had plenty of room for manipulation and interpretation. 'Electric' candles with 'angelhair', the old-fashioned 'glass' stuff, that left your fingers full of tiny cuts! You have to suffer for your art??? LOL. I had bought it for old-time sake, the Christmas tree at my grand-parents was always shrouded in it, as a little girl the shimmering fascinated me... HMMMM, I guess it still does? I love the mystery created, the lightplay. Well, I hope you like it too, have a wonderful day and thanx for viewing and commenting, always appreciated, Magda. Once I was also a beginner, this is one of my 'earlier' images, developed and printed in the wet darkroom.. yes, photographers used to do it in the dark, LOL... MOOD INDIGO...

ONE FROM THE ARCHIVES! 'From the series Feelings and Emotions'. magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2007/03/test.html AND HERE magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2007/04/power-of-emotion-in-imag... MOOD INDIGO (1930) Barney Bigard, Duke Ellington, Irving Mills You ain't been blue; no, no, no. You ain't been blue, Till you've had that mood indigo. That feelin' goes stealin' down to my shoes While I sit and sigh, "Go 'long blues". Always get that mood indigo, Since my baby said goodbye. In the evenin' when lights are low, I'm so lonesome I could cry. 'Cause there's nobody who cares about me, I'm just a soul who's bluer than blue can be. When I get that mood indigo, I could lay me down and die. Beautifully sung by Nina Simone and others... This is my youngest son, 19 and lovesick as you can only be at that age? He became quite detached and solitary for a while. We had gone for a drive, through woods and arrived at this old military airfield, He just walked over and stood like this for quite some time, not moving, I ached for him, he was hurting and there was very little I could do, except… be there. The whole body language and stance languorously emanated sadness and loneliness. A couple of years later he met the right young woman and they are happily married, I wonder if he even remembers this? Another aspect of him! Taken with the Canon AE1, in b&w and tinted Indigo in the darkroom. ADOLESCENCE...

Puberty is the physical transition in the body, hormonal, growth/height and weight— accelerate in the first half of puberty and is completed when the child has developed an adult body. Adolescence is the period of the psychological, psychosocial and cultural characteristics of development and changes during the teen-years, between childhood and adulthood. Here in this portrait, my then 15 year old boy was going through a difficult time in his life, within himself, the transisition is more difficult for one than for the other?. Being blonde, he's fair skinned, and he had been in the sun too long, so, his nose was sun burnt as were his ears. We lived in Holland and were back from a holiday in the South of France, where he wouldn't listen, didn't want any cream, aah well, FIFTEEN... and my youngest son… who is now a man. Another from the archives, this is a much earlier photograph, yes, I’ve been a photographer for a long time, that doesn’t depreciate an image, he? Otherwise, all the old Masters have no place anymore? He hated to be photographed... he was unaware of me taking the photo. Taken with natural light, on my Canon AE1. Another 'hairy' neg to print... in the wet-darkroom. Have a carefree day and thanx for viewing. THE MOTHER...

As it is Mother's Day here tomorrow... the shops are 'cashing' in... a great choice of flowers!
I upload this one 'early'...

Wherever I go, I used to have my Nikon F4 loaded with colourfilm.
(Now replaced by a Nikon D200 and a D7000, which I still try to use as much as possible like a FILM camera)
Very often I had my second camera (another F4) ready with black and white film. (still do)
Digis don't have that problem, he?
Here in Crete I had this secret goal to capture the people, those interesting faces, I wanted to make some great portraits.
In the small mountain village of Prina, where time has stood still, my dream came true.
A group of people sat in the square, in the shade, chatting and laughing.
They have known real hardship, it shows, but there is great kindness and generosity.
It was Vesper's time.
They allowed me to photograph them, I first used the camera at hand (colour) to put them at ease (I thought), but to the Cretans this is very serious... then I took this one...
I understood Ansel Adams, the lengths he went to, what he felt when he saw his subjects, the textures and ALL those wonderful greytones.
A magic moment, the lady is so beautiful and lovely.
Later, for Getty, I needed a model release... she could barely write and did not know her year of birth!
Thanx, M, (*_*)

TRAGEDY...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! THE CRETAN LADIES 2... Often when you look at the Greek ladies, you see a face full of tragedy. Tragedy is a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity, usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law, the gods, fate, or society. Its origins are obscure, but it is certainly derived from the rich poetic and religious traditions of ancient Greece. Its roots may be traced more specifically to the dithyrambs, the chants and dances honoring the Greek god Dionysus, later known to the Romans as Bacchus. These drunken, ecstatic performances were said to have been created by the satyrs, half-goat beings who surrounded Dionysus in his revelry, and the Greek words tragos meaning "goat" and aeidein "to sing" were combined in the word tragoidia, "goat-songs," from which the word "tragedy" is derived. I saw this lady coming down the hill with her son, they stopped at the local kafeneon. The portrait was taken, with her permission, I waited till she had 'forgotten' about me, looked at her and was patient, I knew exactly what I wanted! THE PEOPLE OF CAPE TOWN 5a...

I present to you: CECILIA... the loveliest lady I met in a looooong time. She sells flowers on Cape Town's flower market. AAh what beauty, I was aching to buy some of the exotic flowers and photograph them in my 'studio'... no! I was on 'holiday'... She is as beautiful as the flowers she is selling! THE PEOPLE OF CAPE TOWN 6a...

I present to you: CECILIA... the loveliest lady I met in a looooong time. She sells flowers on Cape Town's flower market. AAh what beauty, I was aching to buy some of the exotic flowers and photograph them in my 'studio'... no! I was on 'holiday'... This was the first time we met. She is as beautiful as the flowers she is selling! And with a great sense of humour and a positive outlook on life!WONDERFUL! ON THE EVE of 11-11-11...

This poem is published with the kind permission of Brian Hutson. This is Robert, all his life, except for the war, he lived in Flamborough, born into a proud family of fishermen, he is also a life long volunteer of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. He stills goes out to inspect his crab pots every early morning, the women clean and prepare them, most he sells to fishmongers on markets, the rest is in the back of his van, parked in his place at Smuggler’s Cove, where he sells them, that’s how we met. I love fresh crabs and he loves people… When he heard I was from Belgium, he grabbed my hand in his huge rough warm hands, in front of his distant eyes he saw the horrors of war, we sat next to his dressed crabs, in silence. I grew up hearing about it; I grew up amongst the many graves in Flanders. It was a winter’s day, bitingly cold, I’ll never know if the tear on his cheek and the drop on his nose was the icy wind or …? LEST WE FORGET... WHY DO YOU STILL MARCH OLD MAN, WITH MEDALS ON YOUR CHEST? WHY DO YOU STILL GRIEVE OLD MAN, FOR THOSE FRIENDS YOU LAID TO REST? WHY DO YOUR EYES STILL GLEAM OLD MAN. WHEN YOU HEAR BUGLES BLOW? TELL ME WHY YOU CRY OLD MAN, ABOUT THOSE DAYS SO LONG AGO? _________________________________ I'LL TELL YOU WHY I MARCH YOUNG MAN, WITH MEDALS ON MY CHEST. I'LL TELL YOU WHY I GRIEVE YOUNG MAN, FOR THOSE I LAID TO REST. THROUGH MISTY FIELDS OF GOSSAMER SILK COME VISIONS OF DISTANT TIMES. WHEN BOYS OF TENDER AGE LOST LIVES AND ALL THEIR MOTHERS PINED. WE BURIED THEM IN A BLANKET SHROUD, THEIR YOUNG FLESH, SCORCHED AND BLACKENED. A COMMUNAL GRAVE, NEWLY GOUGED, IN BLOODSTAINED GOURSE AND BRACKEN. AND YOU ASK ME WHY I MARCH YOUNG MAN? I MARCH TO REMIND YOU ALL. THAT FOR THOSE APPLEBLOSSOM YOUTHS, YOU'D NEVER HAVE KNOWN FREEDOM AT ALL. Sadly my dear friend is no more... Time is precious, best use it for good, have a lovely day and thanx for your time, Magda, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to purchase, visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) BRUSSELS... a Tour-de-France HAT and a haunted look...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! TODAY: THE GENTLEMEN. We live in strange times, good on the one hand, great new technology... supposed to keep us MORE in contact??????????? What I notice is an enormous ALIENATION amongst people... less and less caring, in a selfcentered society where people get lost... I can see it in their eyes... and it pains me... Give some to a charity and your conscience is salved? Normally I refrain from taking this kind of image... but I liked his lovely face. MEMORIES IN THE EYES...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! TODAY: THE GENTLEMEN. Sir Chris Bonington This is Sir Chris Bonnington giving a lecture on his conquest of Everest. His career has included nineteen expeditions to the Himalayas, including four to Mount Everest and the first ascent of the south face of Annapurna. In 1975 Sir Chris Bonington led a successful British Expedition to climb the south-west face of Everest. Thirteen years later at the age of 50 and on his fourth Everest expedition, he finally reached the summit of the world's highest mountain himself. As well as Mount Everest, Sir Chris has successfully conquered some of the most notorious and formidable mountains across the globe, and is still mountaineering at the age of 68. He's a very soft spoken man, slim and even a bit gauche. I asked him to pose before and after a lecture. Here he's in front of a projection screen, looking up to the heavens, reliving his adventures, transported to another world, it's good to accompany him on his interesting, adventurous, often perilous voyages. This was what I was after, the twinkle in his eyes, the joy in his voice, the smile around the lips, the Himalayas right behind his forehead. I greatly admire him for his endurance and determination. THE HORSEBREEDER ...REVISITED...

About 15 years ago, we photographed a couple on their wedding day at this farm with the horses. We’d visited the farmer before, a charming gentleman, lonely after losing his wife, all his passion and life now geared towards the breeding of those magnificent animals. With the help of one of his grandsons who is a vet.,, The Belgian horse is a much-loved gentle giant. This large heavily muscled horse most likely descended from the heavy prehistoric horses and was indispensable as a workhorse in the Middle Ages when this horse was known as the Flanders Horse, now it is known as the Brabant. During one of our recent treks through Flanders, we happened to pass the farm, it has a beautiful long drive with at the end a majestic House, surrounded by very beautiful old stables and barns, I saw activity and gathering all our courage, decided to go in, my heart sank when I saw the sign ‘Veterinary surgeon’ at the entrance, shrugged and drove on. What a wonderful surprise, the kind man was there, now a proud 91, he recognized me, we were pleased to meet again... to be continued I wish you all a superb day and thanx for the visit, M, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY MY IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) WHEN I'M 64...

Early summer in Bridlington, on the North East Heritage Coast of Yorkshire, while Paul was enjoying his fish and chips (a MUST when you go there), I was 'people scanning'. Now I had spotted this couple earlier, sitting in the sunshine on the wall that separates the sea from the harbour, chatting and eating something. Picking up my camera, they started to walk away, she still eating her cream bun, giving him her handbag to carry. I thought I was *$?&^% too late, aah for 2 seconds more!!! I took the shot anyway. The words of this Beatles song swirled through my head: When I'm 64 "When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now, Will you still be sending me a Valentine, birthday greetings, bottle of wine? If I'd been out 'till quarter to three, would you lock the door? Will you still need me, will you still feed me, When I'm sixty-four?" Etc… When I developed the film and saw this one, yes, another ‘difficult’ neg. I think I came away with a better shot. Circumstances, he? And remember, a great photograph is mostly about emotion... (in my opinion). Thanx and have a happy day, Magda, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to purchase, visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) MOMENT of SOLITUDE...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=oD1dWW4_O0w&list=PL673E48271B... SWEET SOLITUDE... There are positive moments of solitude, which many of us 'need' and enjoy? I was walking on the beach, waiting what kind of a sunset it would be, unwinding from a busy day... I saw this young woman standing, playing with the incoming waves, her sandals nonchalantly dangling by the hand, turned deep into herself. It looked like she was dancing to an inner tune, but she wasn't listening to music, what I saw was the cord to hold her sunglasses. I love the atmosphere and emotion in this image, taken with the 300mm lens, but, it was quite a 'headache' to print. THE DISTINGUISHED GENT...

You know by now that I am a 'purist? Prefer proper pure photography with the, nowadays, often forgotten important ingredient: EMOTION! I often face a dilemma, since we entered the digital era... colour or black and white? So I am uploading both and I'm letting you decide? At the yearly Carnival, loud music, happy people dancing and fabulous colourful costumes... and of course some men to guide, escort and secure... He was one of them, very tall, regal, he stood out in the crowd! GENETICS...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ I got this lovely family with 3 children in the studio. Whilst the two youngest looked very much like their dad, her eldest son was just the spitting image of his mum. AAAhhh, the Art of genetics. I placed their hands like that in this portrait because often I find they play such a vital role and say so much. FOR MORE ON THIS and other anecdotes.. magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2009/01/importance-of-hands-in-p... Taken on the Hasselblad, which has square negs, so it is slightly cropped. DEFINITION...

CHRISTIAN DEDEENE... THE BALLET DANCER... Still one of my favourite portraits. He was for 5 years a solo and star dancer with one of the greatest choreographers of the century, Maurice Béjart . I was fortunate to have him in our studio a couple of times, and what an experience it was, each time. After I'd seen him in action and done the 'dance photos', I asked him if he would pose for this portrait I had in my head. I know how these people work out day after day, I admired the definition in the muscle tones and tendons. The result is what I had imagined, the proud profile, the wild hair, and THE DEFINITION. I love dramatic lighting, especially for this kind of subject. Thanks Christian, for being so patient and sharing my artistic vision. magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2008/01/all-shades-of-grey.html Thank you, M, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.com IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) THE DREAM DANCER...

My AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ Christian Dedeene, he was for 5 years a solo and star dancer with one of the greatest choreographers of the century 20th , Maurice Bejart. I was fortunate to have him in our studio a couple of times, and what an experience it was, each time. Thanks Christian, for being so patient and sharing my artistic vision. This is the result of having a professional ballet dancer in the studio, up for a challenge and something different. How do you capture the graceful, often powerful movement and action with such a static medium? And challenging it was, as ballet dancers need to be able to fix on a point to execute the figures correctly and land on the same spot. This image is taken in a completely dark studio. Technically challenging though it is, the results always thrill me. We had tremendous fun and are happy with the results. This has been achieved by strobe flashing. NO DIGITAL MANIPULATION. ONE SINGLE EXPOSURE, ONE NEG. Taken on Hasselblad and black &white film! Modern photographic stroboscopy in its simplest form is a method whereby a subject in motion is lit by repeating flashes of light while the shutter of the camera remains open for a period of time long enough to capture the subject in multiple locations during the time of exposure... Not as many now seem to think, just using FLASH! DANCE WITH THE DEVIL, the shadowdancer...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ Those 2 ballet dancers (he is Christian Dedeene), he was for 5 years a solo and star dancer with one of the greatest choreographers of the century, Maurice Bejart. I was fortunate to have him in our studio a couple of times, and what an experience it was, each time. She has her own Ballet school, Rose d'Ivry in Ostend) are true professionals, otherwise I would not have been able to use this technique, ONE take...no PS! FILM! This is the result of having those 2 wonderful ballet dancers in your studio, who are up for a challenge and something different. How do you capture their graceful, often powerful movements and action in such a static medium? And challenging it was, as ballet dancers need to be able to fix on a point to execute the figures correctly and land on the same spot. This image is taken in a completely dark studio. Technically challenging though it is, the results always thrill me. A bit of lateral thinking of what 'action' can all mean in photography, given the 'still' nature of the beast. We had tremendous fun and are happy with the results. This has been achieved by strobe flashing. A PROPER STROBE PHOTO! Modern photographic stroboscopy in its simplest form is a method whereby a subject in motion is lit by repeating flashes of light while the shutter of the camera remains open for a period of time long enough to capture the subject in multiple locations during the time of exposure... not just using 'flash' as many seem to think. LE CYGNE...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ www.youtube.com/watch?v=b44-5M4e9nI Le Cygne, or The Swan, is the thirteenth movement of The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-SaÎns. Le cygne is often refered to as The Dying Swan, made famous and 'interpreted' like this by Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. This piece features a solo cello (my favourite instrument) in tenor key (clef) and two pianos. I passionately hate the idea of being with it, I think an artist has always to be out of step with his time. - Orson WellesSo, I'm always on the quest for new things... had this idea of 'merging' two images (both taken on Hasselblad) in the 'magical' digital darkroom that photoshop can be... does not often happen!I'm sure you'll let me know what you think? WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A TEXTILE ARTIST AND A PHOTOGRAPHER MEET?

You see the answer! The photographer looks frantically for a 'model', because of course you have a creative idea, you are in a fever, a high state of excitement and can only relax... once you have taken the image, when " you've got it in the bag!!!" Luckily Paul was with me= model (solved)... doesn't he look like a '"Dark Angel"? Lol! View On Black This was the Art of a textile Artisr, material on canvas. I prefer my portraits straight and 'uncooked', it is a personal preference. In my humble view too many good images get destroyed in photoshop or the likes of it, too many gimmicks... GREAT EXPECTATIONS...

For Christmas. As I am very much a night person, I was inspired in the middle of the night, suddenly sat up in bed and had the PERFECT image in front of my mind's eye. I consider pregnancy a very beautiful natural event, but also private, so that's why she's in silhouette. Everybody who knows her, immediately recognises her profile. Prepared the studio and lights, with Paul's help, in she came, I gave her one of my Japanese house-kimonos, she took the pose with total ease. Took a couple of polaroids, to check the angle of the lights to perfection, then I took THE SHOT, not 2 or 3, no, just the ONE! Most people say, it's like she is looking into a 'crystal' ball, what will the future bring? I wish you all the very best, and thanx for all your kind words, time, comments and likes. Very much appreciated. M, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) MOTHER and CHILD...

Mother and child... This is probably the greatest association with Christmas, what it is about, the birth of a child, LOVE... Once the baby is there, the expectations are even greater. A previous image ... see GREAT EXPECTATIONS This here is a moment of intimacy, tenderness, closeness. The song 'Getting to know you' springs to mind. A difficult negative to print, so! HOLDING THE FUTURE...

My AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ That Sunday was another working day. We had a couple around in the studio for portraits. She was about to give birth in about three weeks. I am not writing a ‘rule’ here, just a personal observation and conclusion. In a portrait, for me, they are either in or out, no half measures! I must tell you that I am one of these people who also ‘talk’ with their hands! Maybe that influenced my feelings towards the matter. One of my fascinations in life. Since they are so expressive, almost as much as a face (?), a means of body language and non-verbal communication, we 'say' so much with our hands. We touch, feel, handle, build and destroy, hurt and caress, kill and heal, make music (noise) and command or pray for silence, our hands can be rough or smooth. For more, HERE on this blog I wrote: magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2009/01/importance-of-hands-in-p... See how important hands can be in an image! DADDYYYYYYYYYY????

A studio impromptu! To understand this image you really have to know that, this was a portrait session of a very pregnant lady, her husband standing behind her and embracing her belly. The toddler was demanding daddy's attention, I love the contrast, the tiny hand, the strong hands, the interlaced fingers. The 'link'... In photography, emotion is the often discarded yet so important ingredient! Talk about emotion in a photo, do you agree? I love the beautiful tools that are our hands, FOR MORE ON THIS and other anecdotes.. magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2008/01/all-shades-of-grey.html magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2009/01/importance-of-hands-in-p... VALSE LENTE... A STORY

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ Taken at a Dance Hall, where more mature people gather in the afternoon and come to dance... ...This lady, one of the first to arrive at the dance hall, was well liked and cherished. She was obviously just there to see and enjoy her friends dancing. I had already taken several shots, and sat down on the side to absorb the whole atmosphere; when out of the corner of my eye I saw movement. The one foot was moving with the tune, the stick tapping the beat, the rest of her body still, her face ecstatic. I wondered where she was in her memories, for a moment I saw the young girl emerging, a youthfulness in her shining eyes. The music stopped, applause, her shoulders sagged a bit; she leant a bit more heavily on her stick. Valse Lente... The slow waltz... In photography, emotion is the often discarded yet so important ingredient! 400 iso b/w film Ilford HP5 (grainy), wet darkroom developed and printed, scanned. A LUTHIER’S HANDS at work…

making a violin or guitar, such delicate work with probably the smallest plane in the world? THE BEST TOOLS IN THE WORLD... they are fascinating, HANDS... They can give and take... We touch, feel, handle, build and destroy, hurt and caress, kill and heal, make music (noise) and command or pray for silence, our hands can be rough or smooth. Only Man has hands. We use them as a tool, to make tools, and as a weapon, they serve as eyes for the visually impaired, we can 'talk' with them, they have become a symbol of salutation, supplication, and condemnation... I like this image for the depth and graphic quality. magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2008/01/all-shades-of-grey.html magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2009/01/importance-of-hands-in-p... A DAY at THE MUSEUM…

with Willem at the Roger Raveel museum. Roger Raveel was a Belgian painter whose work is often associated with pop art because of its depiction of everyday objects. Raveel's style evolved throughout his career, from abstract to figurative. Stéphane Beel has designed a museum in which Raveel's art is very much at home. Great for some more creative photography, yes a complete break from the ‘usual’. WILLEM VERMANDERE in CONCERT...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! For the SOUND! www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbIXhfPZdLc www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5hRPYE3ABk&feature=related This was at a verissage of his paintings, etchings and sculptures, however he was also being honoured by the dignitaries and inhabitants of the town, So, he spoke a thank you word and then communicated some more, through his music! He picked up his bass clarinet. The sound of it is still beautifully vibrating in my bones, deep and rich, but played in a hauntingly nostalgic way with a tone often heard in Hebrew music. He calls it the 'Porsche' amongst the instruments. It is huge, good thing Willem is a tall man! magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2009/01/importance-of-hands-in-p...AND FOR THE WHOLE STORY and more about him:magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2007/08/willem-vermandere-is-fam... ALL ABOUT EMOTION… WILLEM

Much as I liked the colour portrait yesterday, I feel this one, in mono has even deeper emotion! Emotion is any relatively brief conscious experience characterised by intense mental activity and a high degree of pleasure or displeasure. Emotions are complex. According to some theories, they are a state of feeling that results in physical and psychological changes that influence our behaviour. The physiology of emotion is closely linked to arousal of the nervous system with various states and strengths of arousal relating, apparently, to particular emotions. Emotion is also linked to behavioural tendency. Extroverted people are more likely to be social and express their emotions, while introverted people are more likely to be more socially withdrawn and conceal their emotions. Emotion is often the driving force behind motivation, positive or negative. Hope you feel it too? I wrote a blog on the importance of hands, HERE: http://magdaindigo.blogspot.co.uk/2009/01/importance-of-hands-in-portrait.html THANX, M, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY MY IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.com Please do not use this image on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved

PLUGGED-IN...

PLEASE, READ THIS... MY IMAGES ARE ONLY FOR SALE FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! THE SHY YOUNG GUITARIST...It is interesting to photograph people, OBSERVE THEM FIRST, most are camera-shy, their body language shows you, before I photograph, I observe... for quite some time, and THEN: I SEE, what is for me, the essence of what I am experiencing. This young boy, with a large guitar bitten by the music-bug, very keen, but only used to play in front of his teacher. He wanted to play for us, we were pleased. Many photographers 'hide' behind their camera (I'm one of them, LOL), for many musicians... it is their instruments! MY SON, MY SUN...

ALL MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! I was in Holland for a photo job and of course stayed with my son who lives there. I had quite a few cameras with me, different types of film. It was Sunday morning, the winter sun shone into the room, I saw this lovely light on him also through reflection from the varnished wooden floor. I was reorganising and cleaning my stuff for the next shoot, he's quite used to that. There was an easy silence between us... He was just dreaming and happened to look in my direction, without seeing me. This is a completely natural and unposed portrait. I have captured the essence of my son, a kind man, hardworking, and like me, a sensitive human being, he has had to learn to live in this harsh world and take some knocks, a bit sad about the betrayals and cynicism. Yet always an optimist and still a bit of a dreamer. I miss him. It is a scanned image of a wet darkroom print. This has not been manipulated in any way, a slight crop off the left, comp in camera, focus on the eyes and very little dof. I used a Nikon F4, and the film was Ilford Delta 400(grainy!!!), no flash. THE KISS...

MY AB FAV... here for today: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ The little girl had been playing very intensely involved in a game, the adults having a vivid conversation, when she suddenly jumped up, ran to her daddy and gave him a kiss. I only had time to lift my camera to my eye and grab this precious moment. The settings all wrong... I was able to 'retrieve' what I wanted, everybody else would have deleted the raw file! A perfect example of the fact that it is NOT only about the technicality but the emotion in a photograph. In a studio, the light would be perfect but you would NEVER be able to 'create' a moment like this! EYE TO EYE…

On the first day of the year, we decided to have a portrait session in the studio. It was some time ago since we took ‘proper' photo’s of each other. What better way to start the New Year? LOL Paul, my husband, yes still crazy after all these years, we see eye to eye on most topics. In photography we each have our own style and vision. We respect that, share a fine sense of humour which made this such a pleasurable experience. Transferred this into black and white, love grainy low res, used to be very much my ‘thang’, in the days of film! ON A LIGHTER NOTE: A CHEEKY SMILE…

A tender image, proper pure photography with the, nowadays, often forgotten important ingredient: EMOTION! At Otley cattle=market, before its closure and now demolition, due to the foot and mouth disease some years back, on a Saturday it used to be a hive of activity where farmers from all around brought their (mostly) sheep and cows to be auctioned. You’d see the most amazing characters and it was a very social, weekly occasion! I had spotted this gentleman, saw Paul (who can be shy about approaching people) go over to him, but the gent was just shaking his head, no. I winked at Paul and said very confidently (ahem!);” I'll get it...” And I did, immediately, and look at that smile. The gent agreed with a twinkle in his eyes. It proves again, that people are people no matter what, here a bit of kindness and attention from a lady and he was happy to pose. We had a nice chat afterwards, but I must have that ‘je ne sais quoi’? heeeeeeeeeeee I often like the discipline of touching back the basics, one camera, one lens, and go out there. BILL...

The Old Bill(police force). A bit of a 'sadness' in this portrait? You know by now that I am a 'purist? Prefer proper pure photography with the, nowadays, often forgotten important ingredient: EMOTION! This is a retired policeman of the old kind, his name is Bill. What a character, so full of stories... not always correct but hilarious! One of them was that he was stationed in Brighton at some point and that the former Brighton force were the ONLY ones to don white helmets in the summer in the fifties and sixties and Bill was one of them! As to why...answers vary... "The Chief tells me to" "Damn seagulls!" Etc. Brighton police wore white helmets from 1933-1939 and 1952-1967. However, they were NOT the only ones! There were quite a few police forces that wore the white helmet. Here is a list : Birmingham Brighton Isle of Man Leeds City [Traffic] Margate Borough Peterborough City Salford Southend-on-Sea Stockport But Bill had one his in his 'Bar', in the corner of his living-room... A real FUN shoot. I took another image of 'his mustache', not a crop, that was used for the cover of a book. This was one of the many portraits for a commisioned book for Age Concern. As mostly, grainy 400 b&w film, white on white, OOOOHHH, I DO LIKE A CHALLENGE, lol!!! A BRIEF POSE…

The train operator and the stoker, they posed and then were off, in a billow of smoke. Talk about grab photo’s!! Pickering, North-Yorkshire, towards the Heritage Coast, you have charming Pickering, an ancient market town and civil parish, on the border of the North York Moors National Park. It sits at the foot of the Moors, overlooking the Vale of Pickering to the south. According to legend the town was founded by a certain king Peredurus around 270BC; however the town as it exists today is of medieval origin. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, the old station is kept in forties style, is run by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust but is mostly operated and staffed by volunteers! Both on and off the trains! magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2008/01/all-shades-of-grey.html I love the frazzled overalls, the steam and the dirt, the stoker..., it almost looks like a charcoal drawing. A Gilbert Becaud song. www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9m1iVP4M5E I see more and more people getting lonelier and lonelier... families far from each other, less time, too busy, phones, alienation... again, grainy 400 b&w film Thank you, M, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS : www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) MAKE-UP... BEAUTY FOR SALE?

The times that we live in seem very much geared towards the young, and that, in an aging population! I was on a photo assignment for Age Concern, when I spotted this lady resting patiently at the counter of a store in a shopping mall. Now normally ladies go there for advice or a ‘make-over’, not this one, she was just a bit tired and saw the inviting chair… I often like the discipline of touching back the basics, one camera, one lens, grainy, gritty 400 asa b&w film, and go out there. Have a relaxed day and thanx as always for your comments, Magda, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to purchase, visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!)
