THE PERFECT GIFT… LISIANTHUS

ORIGIN The lisianthus originates from North America, where it grows in desert riverbeds and in prairie regions. In the states of Texas, Nebraska, Nevada and Colorado they call this plant prairie gentian. Although originally an American beauty, the lisianthus’ rise to glory really only started in Japan. It was Japanese growers who crossed the prairie gentian in the 1930s to create the lisianthus we know today. Its appealing symbolism - it symbolises gratitude amongst other things - makes it the perfect gift. They come in white, green, blue, pink, lilac, purple and salmon. Some flowers even have petals with multiple colours. Apart from being colourful, the lisianthus’ petals are also very soft and delicate. So handle with care! SYMBOLISM The lisianthus may appear soft and cute, but it has a powerful symbolism, since this flower represents appreciation, gratitude and charisma. Lisianthus (Eustoma Grandiflorum) is a genus of 3 species in the family Gentianaceae. The name comes from the Greek words lysis, meaning 'dissolution' and anthos, meaning 'flower’. ELEGANCIA… so Lisianthus.

Bi-coloured opening buds The native habitat of the lisianthus is on the prairies of North America, where it is known as the prairie gentian or the Texas bluebell. The wild flower eustoma is no longer as common a sight as it once was, having been picked to such an extent that it has been unable to re-seed. The lisianthus we know as a cut flower today is the result of the extensive breeding programmes undertaken by Japanese growers since the 1930s. Some sources tell you that the name lisianthus comes from the Greek. Lycis means dissolution and anthos means flowers, although somehow one is no wiser for the research! Other sources say that lisianthus signify dignity, appreciation, gratitude and charisma, which is altogether more becoming. For years I 'experimented' in the studio, to get that Flemish painter's light? Well, I was born in Flanders, it must be in my blood? LOL. PAS de QUATRE... LYSIANTHUS...

SWEET HARMONY... a tonal fest. Chrysanthemum.

'The artist is the confidant of nature, flowers carry on dialogues with him through the graceful bending of their stems and the harmoniously tinted nuances of their blossoms. ' - Auguste Rodin It is a labour of love for me to find 'different' lighting and angles to bring out their unique beauty, the petals so tightly concentrated in the heart and cascading out in full glory. And then, the smaller variety, in sprays, with curling petals! Today, the chrysanthemum is a quintessential Japanese flower. Western-style spray chrysanthemums or yogiku are becoming popular as cut flowers and garden plants in Japan, but respect is still attached to traditional, disbudded types, the big blooms often duo toned, collectively known as kotengiku or antique chrysanthemums. *Name: comes from the Greek "krus anthemonî meaning gold (bronze) flower. Today they come in all colours. *History: The chrysanthemum has been known since before 5000BC in a small yellow form. *Origin: China and Japan. *Colours: all colours from white to deep purple, bronze, lime green and brick red ñ except blue (which are artificially dyed for special events) *Family: Relatives include Chamomile, Marguerite. *Varieties: they come in a range of shapes and sizes, including spiders, spoons, buttons and blooms. *Trivia and Facts: The Chrysanthemum is depicted on Japan's imperial weapons and flag. Japan also has a national festival devoted to the flower (9 Sept). *Mythology: Some countries (such as Malta) think it is unlucky to have the flower indoors. It is associated with funerals and All Saints Day. *Medicinal: Feng Shui adherents believe the chrysanthemum brings laughter and happiness to your home. Teas are made with the leaves to help relieve from flue. A NEW YEAR, A NEW PROJECT…

During our festive ‘holidays’ we were doing what we love: photography! I am now working on a new project. A book of mono flowers. It feels like I have been ‘neglecting’ my black and white photography, which I still love so very much. Monochrome images: all forms of black-and-white photography, which produce images containing tones of grey ranging from black to white. Other hues besides grey, such as sepia, cyan or brown can also be used in monochrome photography. Monochrome photography is mostly used for artistic reasons in the contemporary world. All the shades of grey... from a true black to white... as it should be! I love the subtle tones, all the varied tones, that give the flower/petals/stamens their texture, depth and form, their delectable shapes accentuated, extracted and emphasised without the colour. Don't you agree? The ‘evolution’ of Lysianthus. One neg. METAMORPHOSIS... LYSIANTHUS

Photography in the purest form, black and white... to bring out what I love, the subtle and varied tones, that give the flower/petals/stems their texture, depth and form, their delectable shapes accentuated, extracted and emphasised without the colour.
