INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY…

International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day is marked on March 8 every year. It is a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements. Now you all know that I am a passionate photographer. One of the reasons why I love it is that it can be so versatile, it is NOT just working in a studio, it opens all kinds of experiences, because of my job, I had a (rare) insight into many different and more unusual lives. Examples include: the inside world of BBC, both radio and TV and its people there, the introverts and the extroverts, I'll let you figure out who's who...… Universities, the professors and their advanced research and researchers… I experienced the tensions and vigilance on the bridge of a huge Ferry in one of the busiest sea-lanes in the world, the captain, his crew and their advanced technology... and another on the Irish Sea A small shrimp trawler, the hardship of fishing during the night, managed by a skipper and his mate… A veterinary surgeon performing complicated operations… Ballet dancers in their studios, showing us the tough regime and performing their art… A brief glimpse into the interesting world of travellers… The behind the scenes of a casino, where you really get the sense of drama that goes on there often, it’s a place of ‘mysterious mood’ to me… Several times travelled through Europe, in a truck, a world within our world… a world people do not know much about, day and night, monotonous drives on looooong stretches of road, and the people that transport EVERYTHING we have in our homes. As a woman, to visit and get the tour of a mosque, being shown and everything… A lady at her home, mother and wife, waiting for a ‘better’ day, so that I could take portraits of her, with her boys, her husband… because she was terminally ill with cancer… The world of horse-breeders, farmers, bikers, fish-smokers, painters, glass-artist, sculptors, singers, actors, business entrepreneurs, politicians, president and so many more... I photographed the weddings, new-borns, the deceased, the young, the’ in love’, the sad and lonely, the happy, the old, been in the presence of world-famous people… people are people to me… I enjoyed it… Yes, I enjoy it, in case you had not received that message yet, lol! There is very little, if anything, we cannot do! I want to thank the men who help us achieve and give us the opportunities to work alongside. www.flickr.com/photos/9550033@N04/5502358791/ Get Real! FUN in DUBLIN…

A fun shot in the center of Dublin. Temple Bar is a colourful quarter in the heart of Dublin City which, almost accidentally it could be said, over the years developed a bohemian 'Left Bank' character. It is a shopping, dining, entertaining and exploring feast for the senses. On a typical Irish morning, Temple Bar wakes up to the smell of steaming espresso, the clatter of kegs of Guinness rolling off delivery trucks, and rainwater running between the cobblestones and setts down to the Liffey( the river that runs through Dublin). I'M SO SORRY FOR NOT JUMPING, BUT I WAS WEARING A LONG, TIGHT PENCIL-SKIRT... Paul and I have this agreement, that the 'REAL' photographer is the one who has the original idea. So, when I saw 'the Wall of Fame', Paul had already taken many shots of it, but this was how I saw it, I explained it to Paul and he took it, that makes it my photo... although we have a different 'eye' and artistic temperament and view, we avoid taking the 'same shots' as much as possible. Wishing you all a great day and thanx for your comments every day, Magda, (*_*) FROM the new set, MY PORTRAITS, NATURAL OR NOT! www.flickr.com/photos/9550033@N04/sets/72157602785147721/

BEFORE WE GO-GO…

DAY 8 BEFORE WE GO-GO… So, it is Saturday, the day we go back home in the UK. Everything is packed and in the car, We have time for a portrait in the mirror in the hall. We have very few photo;s of the two of us, so, it is an occasion, lol, plus, the name of the house that was ours for a week features in it: Huyze Lanckhals. A very Brugge name! At the end of the 15th century, the oppressed people of Bruges rose in revolt against the unpopular Emperor Maximilian of Austria. They captured Maximilian and imprisoned him in the Craenenburg House on the Market Square, together with his equally unpopular adviser, Pieter Lanckhals. Lanckhals was condemned to death and Maximilian was forced to watch the execution. The Emperor eventually escaped and later took his revenge: he decreed that ‘until the end of time’ the city should be required at its own expense to keep swans on all its lakes and canals. And why swans? Because swans have long necks – and the Dutch for ‘long neck’ is ‘lange hals’ – or ‘lanckhals’! And so a city legend was born… I wish you a day full of beauty and thank you for your visit, Magda, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.com Please do not use this image on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ For December I upload images to do with the festive season. This is going to be many different things as you can see... I had to dig deep for that one, in every sense, it was a very special, moving and private moment. We had a photo gallery and it was shortly before Christmas. I was doing the window dressing, and had decided, since Christmas is greatly connected with children to use that as a theme. I bought one of the electrical Santas holding a candle, moving his head, with a very kind and jolly face, totally new then, a huge success, kids kept dragging their parents to see it. It was in the morning, cold and drift-snow flying, nobody in the streets yet, although the angels were already singing the carols over the tannoy (loudspeakers in the street). Santa was doing his thing, I was giving the framed images a last wipe, when I heard a gentle thump and I looked up to see this sweet tender moment. This elderly gent stood there, looking with the joy of a child in his eyes. I grabbed my camera from the chair, I saw I had one shot on a grainy 400 asa film left to take this one off image, I did not know how long he was going to brave the elements, turned out he gazed for quite some time. Then he spotted me, nodded at me, a smile and he was gone, a very emotional moment! ONE SHOT!!! Always keep the child in a small corner of your heart, never let go of that wonderful feeling... May your w-e be full of goodness, Magda (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.com IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) JUST CHECKING...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer at some point in their lives, and at least a third of women will not self-check their breasts. Early diagnosis is essential in treating breast cancer, and thatís where monthly self-checks come in. If you find it difficult, ask your partner for help, I'm sure he won't mind? :) OCTOBER: Breast Cancer Awareness month... Near the barn of Ter Doest in Flanders is the largest sculpture of Belgian Sculptor Laurent Geers: 12 naked women sitting next to each other on trestles. This work is called 'Attempt to hold the transience of beauty and make it last. The 12 women seem to sit together in four groups of three - though, that is not quite so - there are older and younger women, fuller and slimmer, happy and sad, women communicate , comfort one another and share joy. The image offers a kaleidoscope of human emotions and interactions. And every woman is an individual, they are all different. You would have to speak about a book to write. Successful and impressive! Lead and enjoy a good life, do and say things that enrich... and do not forget to tell the people close to you, how much you love them! You'll be able to live a life with few regrets! HAPPY DIWALI...

I give you light... Diwali is the Hindu Festival of Lights. For Jains (Buddhists) it is one of the most important festivals, and beginning of the Jain year. It is also a significant festival for the Sikh faith. Diwali is one of the most popular and eagerly awaited festivals of India. It is celebrated for 5 consecutive days in Hindu month of Ashwayuja which usually correspond to the months of October or November. Hindus, Jains and Sikhs celebrate Diwali and use the occasion to celebrate life and strengthen relationships. Typically, celebrations focus on lights and lamps, particularly traditional diyas, although electric lights have become widespread. Fireworks may also be associated with the festival in some regions. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. So, the old (in the darkroom days with film!) joke was always... that photographers do it in the dark! Here's PROOF! A happy Diwali to All friends around the world. Magda (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN...

CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN... Intriguing? Open it? Ilkley Moor, the Cow and Calf. Ilkley Moor is part of Rombalds Moor, the moorland between Ilkley and Keighley. The moor, rises to 402 m (1,319 ft) above sea level. I had been admiring the view, the green bracken starting to change to stunning Autumn colours, the sheep grazing noisily, breathing in the fresh fragrant air. The sun was fast disappearing, a chill setting in. Climbers come here to practice and enjoy their sport. I waited until this guy hit the 'sun'. He looked ready and determined. Of MAN and NATURE…

Now and then, you find yourself suddenly dwarfed and humbled by Nature? And you realise what a small spec we really are? LOL Here Paul was standing on Ilkley Moor, The rock formation known as the Cow and Calf. Ilkley Moor is part of Rombalds Moor, the moorland between Ilkley and Keighley in West Yorkshire, England. The moor, which rises to 402 m (1,319 ft) above sea level, a delight for rock-climbers. Ilkley Quarry is the site of the famous "Cow and Calf", a large rock formation consisting of an outcrop and boulder, also known as Hangingstone Rocks. The rocks are made of millstone grit, a variety of sandstone, and are so named because one is large, with the smaller one sitting close to it, like a cow and calf… thanx for viewing, always interested in what you have to say! JUST HANGING AROUND… SUMMER

SUPPORT the PHOTOGRAPHER: BUY DIRECT! In the heat, that was about all anybody did, there wasn't much 'play' in the children either! Taken at the provincial domain Lippensgoed-Bulskampveld. A magic place, the castle, wonderful trees shaping long shaded walks, a lovely pond, a place for children to 'learn while they play', the farm transformed into a restaurant with a huge terrace, where we could have an ice-cream and something to drink. Most children are great to photograph, no inhibitions, this one was a natural model if ever I saw one... Have a colourful Summer and thanx for viewing, M, (*_*) Please do not use this image on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved

The GIRL and the PARROT...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ We had the pregnant mum in the studio first, then dad came with this little angelic tearaway... I got out this colourful Parrot, a prop we've had for years, you say something and the parrot repeats it 3 times, imitating whatever sound you made, or whatever you said... you can make it bark, miau. moo... We've had a lot of fun and laughter out of the silly thing... However the girl was fascinated, it kept her busy for a while, while the parents were getting ready for the portrait session. The studio was set before they came, she was faed in the parrot...so, bang, I got her! ALICE in WONDERLAND with a dwarf-RABBIT

MARCH—> month of HOPE, beauty and joy. ... just joy. Another 'candid'. She was just thrilled to show me her new pet dwarf-rabbit. I'll repeat it again, personally, emotion is (often) the most important in an image, not the technical side (up to a point)! Blog about the portrait HERE: magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2007/03/importance-of-portrait-i... BUTTERFLY...

this was taken at a wedding, the bride had chosen a theme of 'BUTTERFLY' for her special day. This was one of the bridesmaids during the reception... the party was in full swing, she just sat there, in her own little world, like counting the flowers? She is actually pointing at two caterpillars!!! You can see it in the larger version! Some people are 'born' as solitaires, I'm one of them, that does not mean that you do not enjoy the company of people, it is that solitude doesn't bother you, sometimes you prefer a solitary moment, you have enough with your own self, you are happy with you... SWEET DREAMS LITTLE ONE...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ I declare February LOVE, romance and beauty month. EMOTION IN PHOTOGRAPHY! It had been a long and exciting day, she was wearing her new gown... of course! She was ready for bed, said good-night and cuddled up to her dad (also in his new dressing-gown)... in no time they were BOTH asleep! His strong hand preventing her from falling, her hand clinging her comfort toy... neither of them moved... Emotion, an IMPORTANT, all too often forgotten, ingredient in photography, more IMPORTANT than technical prowess, a photo without emotion is ... just a 'picture'? lol, Thank you for your time! SAX BABY...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ Was in Holland, studio and all for a big architectural job in Amsterdam. An assistant asked if I'd have the time to take some portraits of her and her sister. The girl also played the saxophone and had tentatively brought her instrument. I didn't mind, so long as I could do some shots for myself... Also brought the baby. In an unplanned moment of pause, a blow on the sax to the surprise of the baby, where was this sound coming from? Out of that shiny toy? LOL Just had time to pick up my camera and take the photo... ALWAYS be ready? MARATHON MAN... IN HONOUR OF THE OPENING of THE OLYMPICS!

Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. During the games, all conflicts among the participating city-states were postponed until the games were finished. The Games were held every four years, and this period, known as an Olympiad, was used by Greeks as one of their units of time measurement. The marathon is a long-distance running event with an official distance of 42.195 kilometres (26 miles and 385 yards), that is usually run as a road race. The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon (the namesake of the race) to Athens. The legend states that he was sent from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon (in which he had just fought), which took place in August or September, 490 BC. It is said that he ran the entire distance without stopping and burst into the assembly, exclaiming "νικωμεν’ (nikomen)" (victory is ours, we have won!), before collapsing and dying. The Marathon is usually one of the last sporting events of the Olympics. I WISH ALL THE ATHLETES GOOD LUCK! This man runs marathons for charity all over the world. That is his job. There was an article about him in a magazine and they wanted a 'special' image to go with it. This was set up in our studio and this was the creative idea I came up with. All done in camera, on film, no digital manipulation, ONE NEGATIVE. The procedure is called stroboscopy or strobe flashing. The photography and study of subjects in motion has been one of the fascinations of photographers since its invention. There are several factors that need to be considered, adjusted and controlled to end up with technically effective photographs made in this manner. These include knowledge and the ability to adjust the flashing rate of the stroboscope, the influence of the background on the final image, the choice of exposure time and knowledge of the output or power of the individual flashes produced by the studio lights. This photograph was not taken with a stroboscope (which is one special constant flashing light), but strobe-flashing (several big studio flashes). thanx for viewing, always interested in what you have to say! THE MEDUSA in AUTUMN

I've had this idea in my head for a very long time... since the days of film... To make the 4 seasons, with flowers. Now at last I can do it... in photoshop... it takes hours of work, because I am not so good at it... little by little I'm getting there, this is nr 3. In the first instance, I am a photographer: Old School, film, each shot cost, the wet darkroom, getting everything right in the studio and in camera... now it is a whole new ball-game! Photoshop the new digital darkroom, where you can make an image into a painting, well, into anything you want (or don't want!) thanx for your time and comments, M, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) THE MEDUSA IN SUMMER

I've had this idea in my head for a very long time... it was in the days of film... The florist I approached told me it was unfeasible, to make the 4 seasons, with flowers as headgear... View LARGE and On Black Now at last I can do it... in photoshop... hours of work, because I am not so good at it... yep, when I get the bug... I'd work day and night, forget to eat, drink or sleep... Who wants to be a creative????? Heaven and hell???????????? Definitely the ecstasy and the agony... Only two seasons more to go... when I have enough time.... One positive point... Paul knew BEFORE he married me! LOL, and thanx for your time and comments, M, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) A BIT OF FUN TO START THE WEEK? LOL, and thanx for your time and comments, M, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) CHRISTMAS SPIRIT...

For December I upload images to do with the festive season. It was in the morning, cold and drift-snow flying, nobody in the streets yet, although the angels were already singing the carols over the tannoys. Santa was doing his thing, I was giving the framed images a last wipe, when I heard a gentle thump and I looked up to see this sweet tender moment. This elderly gent stood there, looking with the joy of a child in his eyes. I grabbed my camera from the chair, I saw I had one shot on a grainy 400 iso film left to take this one off image, no time to check anything as I did not know how long he was going to brave the elements, turned out he gazed for quite some time. Then he nodded at me, a smile and he was gone, a very emotional moment! ONE SHOT!!! Always keep the child in a small corner of your heart, never let go of that wonderful feeling... May your day be full of goodness, Magda (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY OUR IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) THE KISS...

For December I am uploading images to do with the festive season. This is many different things, as you can see... EMOTION IN PHOTOGRAPHY! The little girl had been playing very intensely involved in a game, the adults having a vivid conversation, when she suddenly jumped up, ran to her daddy and gave him a kiss. I only had time to lift my camera to my eye and grab this precious moment. The settings all wrong... I was able to 'retrieve' what I wanted, everybody else would have deleted the raw file! There are many who probably have worked long hours, with all kinds of softwear to get this effect? LOL! A perfect example of the fact that it is NOT only about the technicality but the emotion in a photograph. In a studio, the light would be perfect but you would NEVER be able to 'create' a moment like this! An IMPORTANT, all too often forgotten, ingredient in photography, more IMPORTANT than technical prowess, a photo without emotion is ... just a 'picture'? Wishing you all a day full of love and thanx for your welcome visit, M (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) MY SON…

DAY 3 My beautiful son has joined us for the day. We caught up first and then set out to explore Brugge. So we were in The Gothic Hall of The Town Hall of Brugge, I was photographing lovely details I spotted and when I turned around, there he was, in the light, where his ancestors had stood…. my parents, my grand-parents. I told him how they had taken their wedding vows in this magnificent room. It was just another magic moment. I wish you a day full of beauty and thank you for your visit, Magda, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.com Please do not use this image on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved

BIG DADDY...

FOR FATHER'S DAY! HAVE A HAPPY ONE DADDIES! She was looking at how her Daddy was walking and tried to walk just like him, it was so funny. But also good to see the concentration on her sweet little face. Love the interaction. The young ones see the way we do things... and copy it, just like we did... they prefer the 'bad' things first, like we did... Let's set a good example? Lol, and thanx for your visit and comments! WONDERFUL WORLD? CAN BE! HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

My son had found this seat amongst the red Begonias, his little boy ran towards him, picked up one of the fallen flowers and offered it to his dad, a very tender moment... Not something you can set-up! It is never easy being a parent! Each child is an individual... does not come with an instruction manual! LOL Have a great one dads. A lifelong commitment, that's being a parent, to care about smaller and bigger things, the being there, we have a duty, the morals that we teach them... that's what will (ideally?) shape them, let's not underestimate the impact we have on our nearest and dearest. The 'father' figure is often one of strength and discipline, never forget that bit of tenderness, so needed in all our lives. Lead and enjoy a good life, do and say things that enrich... and more than ever, do not forget to tell the people close to you, how much you love them! With love to you and thank you for ALL your faves and comments, M, (* _ *) For more of my other work or if you want to purchase, visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) THE PIANOLESSON...

Another tender image, proper pure photography with the, nowadays, often forgotten important ingredient: EMOTION! It was a lovely moment, to see this father teach his little girl how to play Beethoven's "Fur Elise"... I saw the reflection in the piano afterwards, a nice added touch... AT ALL TIMES... LOVE...

Today500px.com/kujaja declared it KISSING DAY!!!!!! Lovely idea. So here is a contribution. There was a street sign at this famous pub THe Temple Bar, in the center of Dublin, that said no parking... I cloned that all out, and made a 'new sign'. We decided on a fun, love theme, but this is us very often, just for the happiness of being together, also the joy of just having captured a good shot... We share so much. Yes, to me love is an itch you can't scratch! Dictionaries tend to define love as deep affection or fondness, The concept of love, however, is subject to debate. Some deny the existence of love, calling it a recently invented abstraction. Moreover, approximately 13 percent of cultures reportedly have no word for love. Others maintain that love exists but is undefinable; being a quantity which is spiritual, metaphysical, or philosophical in nature. Love is one of the most common themes in art. Hope you have a day full of love and thanx for visiting and commenting, Magda, (*_*) FOR MORE see HERE: magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2007/04/at-all-times-love.html For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY!), visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) 1 HOUR IN THE LIFE OF A PHOTOGRAPHER. Breaking the Silence, solving the 'riddle of the rope'... SONN

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! THE STORY CONTINUES... Solving the 'riddle of the rope': View On Black The young monk gets up, disappears behind one of the huge pillars, to return without his white cape, he smiles at us, half winks and nods like to say, “ now’s your moment, get ready…”, he walks towards the rope I photographed earlier, carries it till it is straight under the spire, where it disappears, high up. He takes a deep breath, a good grip, looks up and with all his force pulls it down, and then up, at last we hear the solemn tolling of the bell. The sound reverberates through everything; you hear it in- and outside, you feel it in your body. After about 3 minutes, he starts to slow the bell down, he‘s skilled at this, handles that rope expertly till the silence returns. The rope is tied back, the monk returns, caped, to his place… Why not listen to this and watch the whole set as a slideshow? www.youtube.com/watch?v=drU7ESj4HvY&feature=related For the story of Day 2, part 2: magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2009/10/day-2-of-our-adventures-... On the MONT ST MICHEL. In Silence...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! 1 HOUR IN THE LIFE OF A PHOTOGRAPHER. There are many special moments in your life, of many different kinds… but some just surpass everything. Often unexpected, and yet so intense that they stay with you like it happened yesterday, etched in the front-room (lol) of your brain. You know when it happens, it alters your state of mind, your are in a HYPER mode, alert, you’ll remember the sounds, the smells… and record the ‘visual’, because you are a photographer! Such an experience happened to me on the Mont St Michel. It was getting later but not cooler, we decided to linger on in the church a while longer, we’d been around, so we sat on the benches, soaking up the atmosphere, admiring this in history-seeped monument. More activity, I saw a young monk dressed all in black, there was a coming and going, I waited with a real sense of expectation; the ropes had been removed from around the beautifully ceramic-tiled floor in front of the altar. A silence has descended, people whisper, the odd child cries, hushed quickly by the parents… The young monk, dressed all in black, now wearing and dons his white cape with great flair... In Silent contemplation, the older monk...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! THE STORY CONTINUES... More nuns arrive and follow the same ritual as the first, a few more monks, they are the oldest. One carries a small chair; he is too old to kneel, he is allowed to sit. A gold leafed book was carried in and put on a lectern, the light from the windows falls on the few ‘decorations’ in this church, (as most of it was lost over all the years for many reasons), the small, delicate cross and the top edge of the missal. In The Solemn Silence of Prayer...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! THE STORY CONTINUES... 1 HOUR IN THE LIFE OF A PHOTOGRAPHER. It is a magic moment, as they all sit in deep prayer. I am not a religious person; I respect the religions and their followers. So here I sit, this cannot leave one indifferent, I find it emotional and almost ‘envy’ them for their belief, their apparent peace, their silent devotion and commitment. I dare not move to take shots from a different angle, my camera, otherwise so quiet, now seems to go off with a huge ‘clack’ whenever I push the shutter. Paul and I sit in the front. SERENITY...

A Benedictine nun, on her way to the St Elizabeth church in the beguinage, where she lives. This photo is 25 years 'old'... captured with my (beloved) Nikon F4, on Fuji Pro film iso, 400, a real grab-shot. We had been there quite some time when she suddenly appeared, walking swiftly, I sensed it, turned around, camera up, focus, click... I didn't think I had it, but I did! There are very few of them left now, I hear. I like the look of serenity on her face. Almost all photo's have a story behind them. LOST AND FOUND... REMEMBERANCE DAY... 11.11.2011 at 11 o'clock

I break my usual uploads for the special day that is tomorrow, REMEMBERANCE DAY... Spare a moment!? It is a small series. This gent, with his wife, they came from Australia and after a long search found the name... The Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing is a war memorial in Ypres, Belgium dedicated to the commemoration of British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient of World War I and whose graves are unknown. It is a place where you become still... the sadness AND madness hits me each time... Another big, unaswered WHY...what was it all for? Following the Menin Gate Memorial opening in 1927, the citizens of Ypres wanted to express their gratitude towards those who had given their lives for Belgium's freedom. As such, every evening at 20:00, buglers from the local fire brigade close the road which passes under the Memorial and sound the Last Post. Except for the occupation by the Germans in World War II when the daily ceremony was conducted at Brookwood Military Cemetery, in Surrey, England, this ceremony has been carried on uninterrupted since 2 July 1928. On the very evening that Polish forces liberated Ypres in the Second World War, the ceremony was resumed at the Menin Gate despite the fact that heavy fighting was still taking place in other parts of the town. The ceremony is a solemn occasion.. it cannot leave you untouched! The echo bouncing off the thousands of names, all young men, who had no life, they gave it for us... so that we could have today our biggest treasure, FREEDOM! Let's not forget. Reginald Blomfield's triumphal arch, designed in 1921, is the entry to the barrel-vaulted passage for traffic through the mausoleum that honours the Missing, who have no known graves. The patient lion on the top is the lion of Britain but also the lion of Flanders. It was chosen to be a memorial as it was the closest gate of the town to the fighting, and so Allied Troops would have marched past it on their way to fight. Actually, most troops passed out of the other gates of Ypres, as the Menin Gate was too dangerous due to shellfire. Its large Hall of Memory contains names on stone panels of 54,896 Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Salient but whose bodies have never been identified or found. On completion of the memorial, it was discovered to be too small to contain all the names as originally planned. An arbitrary cut-off point of 15 August 1917 was chosen and the names of 34,984 UK missing after this date were inscribed on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing instead. The Menin Gate Memorial does not list the names of the missing of New Zealand and Newfoundland soldiers, who are instead honoured on separate memorials. People are still comin from all over the world every day, to look for and honour the names of long lost relatives, just the see the engraved name and try and stick a poppy next, just to say, you are not forgotten... GREAT AFFECTION

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ between the horsebreeder and the foal...or, is she whispering? LOOK AT THE HANDS... I love photographing horses, not the easiest to do, there are standards, but with the help of the breeders it usually becomes a very pleasant and exciting experience. Here was a fortuitous moment, as a photographer, yes you have to focus on the main subject and there is MUCH to think about and concentrate on, but as a creative you stay aware of what is going on around you, and these 'off' images often become my favourite shots... One of the horses I had photographed was taken back, so this was one of those 'in-between' moments... This is the mother in the family that breeds horses, it is tough and yet rewarding. They witness the birth and tend to the foals with love and yet when they lose one, they are quite stoic about it... Such tenderness, closeness, emotion, just HAD to be captured. I wrote a BLOG about THE IMPORTANCE of HANDS in PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY: click HERE: magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2009/01/importance-of-hands-in-p... THE HORSEBREEDER AND HIS WORLDCHAMPION...

About 15 years ago, we photographed a couple on their wedding day at this farm with the horses. We’d visited the farmer before, a charming gentleman, lonely after losing his wife, all his passion and life now geared towards the breeding of those magnificent animals. The Belgian horse is a much-loved gentle giant. This large heavily muscled horse most likely descended from the heavy prehistoric horses and was indispensable as a workhorse in the Middle Ages when this horse was known as the Flanders Horse, now it is known as the Brabant. During our recent trek through Flanders, we happened to pass the farm, it has a beautiful long drive, I saw activity and gathering all our courage, decided to go in, my heart sank when I saw the sign ‘Veterinary surgeon’ at the entrance, shrugged and drove in. The veterinary is his grandson. What a wonderful surprise, the kind man was there, now a proud 91, he recognized me, we were pleased to meet again. “Of course welcome to take as many photographs as we wanted” he said, adding and pointing quickly behind him, this is Igor, a world champion! … He wiped his running nose with a white handkerchief… you should have been here a bit sooner; Igor just sired a few mares… PS: to sire is to inseminate. AUTUMNAL OUTING...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ Nothing Gold Can Stay poem by Robert Frost (1923) Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. It all looked very leisurely, I was photographing when I heard the clopin-clopant of hooves... I turned, pointed and got this image! They disappeared into the green distance... Have a good one! Big men... left outside the shops, to wait for the ladies. I do wonder, are they the women's dogs (choice?), if so, ladies... how naughty!!!
Or is it the men's choice , to make them look even hunkier??????? TEE HEE, lol
THANX FOR VIEWING, as ALWAYS, much appreciated. I hope you get as much pleasure out of them as I do, M, (*_*)

SUPER BRITISH...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ Flamborough, the parking next to Smuggler's Cove. I had just had my usual chat with my good friend Robert, had bought one of his tasty, fresh crabs off him, for later. I saw those two going up, in, let's say, dress code of another era, as they walked on, I saw the reason why, the strangest car I ever saw, half rocket/ half... Sometimes there are things that, if you hadn't photographed them, you'd swear you'd dreamt them... PATRIOTIC CAPITALISM?

I was invited for an exclusive interview by Debbie Slater of 500px. You can read it HERE:500px.com/blog/139/portrait-magda-indigo Hope you enjoy it? A small peep behind the camera? I do not often give them, but when I do, I go all out, LOL. Thank you Debbie and 500px. Thanking everybody who took the time to view and comment on my images over the 8 months I've uploaded on 500px. Your warm respons touches me deeply. A BIG THANK YOU ALL, M, (*_*) For the jubilee. You don't have to be a 'Royalist' to enjoy the atmosphere and pleasure that you see in so many people! The Queen celebrates her Diamond Jubilee this w-e, 60 years... I admire her achievement. I don't envy her though, I'm happy with my life the way it is... Yes, it is raining here today, but there's a happy atmosphere, a real party-mood all around! ABOUT THE IMAGE: LOL. ON THE GO at KINGS CROSS STATION

LONDON... Sitting on a low wall, waiting, on a Sunday noon, Kings Cross Station in London, it was stifling hot. Instead of being bored and impatient, I decided to pass the time being 'creative'... I noticed all the people hurrying by and also, especially, that EVERYBODY was lugging bags, lots of bags, of all types, colours and designs. Spotted, striped, classic, coloured. I wondered, what were they all transporting? Can we not go anywhere without our 'wheeled' carriers? Often not one but more, backpacks, plastic, leather, designed, handbags, so many. All different, just like the people, their shoes, legs and leg wear! I saw people traveling alone, in pairs, in group, I saw them smile, I saw them laugh, I saw some cry, I saw some depressed and some tired, people of all walks of life. I saw hellos and I saw good-byes... all the emotions ... I became smilingly fascinated and eventually left feeling a great sense of joy because of this series. I feel so biased, I like them ALL, LOL, thanx, M, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to purchase, visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) UP THE WALL!!!!

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! Yes, my previous upload was yet again 'DISLIKED'. I am no different to anybody else, I also do not like it when that happens. We all like our images to do 'well', however, I am now only here to build up some nice portfolios, make sales, and ENJOY the inter-action with some very lovely people. Lost too many already who were fed up with the system. I am stronger, much more resilient! I work on an image, from beginning to finish, to present the public with an immaculate photo, something that I am proud of, stand by 100%... I know, after over 50 years (I started from a young age, LOL), what a quality photograph IS! And then somebody comes along... for no reason except envy, maliciousness, a flawed character, that's all I can think of? Sad to think that there are beings out there who have to get their 'kicks' from this? Why is that 'power' given to the wrong people? If the management of 500px see that a person misuses it, AND MUST have this... that their 'cherished system ' CANNOT work without it... do they not think they should take the dreaded button AWAY from that person??? THANX for ALL your comments and visits, so appreciated. AAAAAAAAH, TO BE FREE...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! We really do not appreciate enough what we have and moan too much about what we DON'T have??? All the irrelevant, superfluous bits? Material stuff? My parents lived through two wars, hunger, fear, can you imagine? 9 years of their life!!! On D-Day, 6th of June 1944, that day, 156,000 troops — 73,000 of them Americans — took part in history’s biggest amphibious landing along a 50-mile stretch of beaches supported by 6,900 vessels ships and 11,590 airplanes, according to British figures. By nightfall on June 6, more than 9,000 Allied soldiers were dead or wounded, but more than 100,000 had made it ashore, securing French coastal villages and eventually the rest of the occupied countries. At the same time American airborne troops dropped by parachute in Nazi-occupied France as the allies began a campaign across Europe that ended with Germany’s surrender 11 months later. More than 3,000 allied troops died in the first two days of the campaign to turn the tide of World War II. But just as many French civilians, caught up in the conflict, perished in the same period, according to a new study by British historian Anthony Beevor. WE OWE THEM OUR FREEDOM. MORE THAN EVER: Lead and enjoy a good life, do and say things that enrich... and do not forget to tell the people close to you, how much you love them! AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ From the series: People@work.... And the fun continues! The first part of the pier in Llandudno, in North Wales, is just a walk-along stretch full of stalls for gaming, fooding... kitschy-ing, retro-ing... Not everybody seems to enjoy being there... SHY STERGIOS...

This is the shop-owner, it was evening, most people at table, he sat outside with a friend, he had dreadlocks and a kind face. I gathered my courage and approached him, I wanted to take his portrait... WE exchanged names. Meet Stergios! I empathised with him when he told me he did not like to have his photo taken, I also am not keen on it. After a lot of cajoling and a major charm offence, he finally agreed. Inside we went. I did not ask him to pose, just please look at the lens... Barely time to put the camera settings right, no time to put the flash on the cam, which I do not like anyway! Overhead neon-lights which cast a green colour-cast... aiaiai. Fast as I worked I could sense it was still taking too long for his liking... What an expression! FOR THE GREAT EXPERIENCE:View LARGE and On Black We had a lovely chat afterwards and I came home with bags of Cretan herbs, honey and their famous saffron. So everybody happy. (?) WHERE DO I BEGIN????

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! Fuengirola, Andalusia, Spain. Loving the sea, we ALWAYS look for the local 'working' harbour, interesting and thrilling, different... and similar. Often you will see the older fishermen, they cannot stay away and often it is sons and family who continue the traditions, the fishing, they tend and mend the nettings... Their eyes are keen on spotting a hole and their hands are nimble! Also, like everywhere, they are camera shy. I always try and engage in conversation with them, letting my camera in my bag or have it casually hanging on my hand... If you are down to earth and you have the good fortune that they 'like' you, you are IN!!! Can go back whenever. LOOKING FOR HOLES...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! On the quayside of Ierapetra I found these fishermen man, late afternoon, looking for holes in the fishing-nets... MENDING THE NETS...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! FOR THE GREAT EXPERIENCE:View On properBlack On the quayside of Ierapetra I found this man, late afternoon, mending the fishing-nets in a very specific way, I had never seen, with hands and foot! So very adept with their special tools and knife it was a pleasure to watch. Their nets are much finer than what I grew up with, which was a kind of rope. MENDING THE NETS... in SPAIN

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! Fuengirola seems to be busy for this time of year, it’s not easy finding a parking space, but when we do, we‘re glad, because it is very close to the harbour. The old port is still used by the local Spanish fishermen. It is Sábado (Saturday) and there is little activity, the boats are in. Eventually we find a fisherman checking his gear, again it is something I’ve never seen before, and yet, every country I ever visited, I’m always drawn to the fishing harbours, their methods, netting, boats and people. Always different yet always the 'same'? ...A bit further I spot more people, mending the netting, where I come from it was the ‘old’ people’s job, not here it seems. I sense they don’t like the ‘intrusion’. FOR THE WHOLE STORY, HERE: magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2010/11/week-in-life-of-photogra... THE FARMER'S WIFE...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ From the series: People@work. THE END OF MILKING. For quite some time now I've been collecting impromptu images of people whilst doing their daily work. They are not set up, it is great doing, I've learnt a lot, because even the most shy people like to talk about their particular skill. This is one of the first I did, the last milking of the day, hence the golden glow. It was a lovely evening and we wanted some fresh air after a day working in the studio... A balmy summer's eve in Flanders. I don't think it matters where this was taken, farmers all over the world are sunkissed and have a ruddy complexion. The tight comp is done in camera, it is not a crop, taken in the 'film' days with my Nikon F4. THE CRETAN LADIES...

Two ladies came down the slopes of the hills with bags of produce from there plots. Cucumbers, courgettes, beans, herbs... It seems to be a daily thing in Crete. The food they eat extremely fresh and very 'seasonal'. Not being unkind here, but a lot of the ladies have mustaches, not a thought of shaving it... they just lead a different and more natural, kinder lifestyle. Still more in tune with Nature, I suppose. I am in a RED PERIOD... BARBARA and her gift of oranges...

GENEROUS BARBARA from Fodele Crete. When Barbara realised the 'photoshoot' had come to an end, she showed me some finished bags. Now, I'm a photographer and prefer pockets, but she had been so kind I really couldn't resist, what a businesswoman! So, I bought one, paid, she went inside for change. As she came out she was holding out those two beautiful oranges, fresh off the tree... KIDS in THE CITY...

People are scared, parents worry, not without cause, the news is not good... To see children playing outside, in the city, is a rare sight now! The streets have gone silent. Sometimes you get lucky, you'll hear the laughter or tears that come with the joys of having fun with your neighbours instead of just with your brothers and sisters. I've often observed these kids from the studio, they are well behaved, somehow they seem to have a preference for that ONE derelict backyard, I wonder what the attraction is? It's not easy growing up these days, it's not easy growing up in the city these days... I decided to start yet another series, I find it interesting, it will be ongoing for some time I suspect, lol. PEOPLE of Cape Town... THE BOND

It was our first 'proper' day and we decided to go and explore the center of the city. It was a mild day, the sun was out, yes, 'another beautiful day in paradise' we joked. Wandering and admiring everything, I noticed how colourful it was, and also the people, oh dear... how pale we looked! On Greenmarket Square, you had all the stalls, with all the arty stuff, we both noticed how creative the local artists are, often with minimum resources. You do have those that beg and then you have those that will do ANYTHING to make a living. More about that later! I find 'strolling' very tiring, so we found ourselves a place for some refreshments and a 'break',lol, the cameras never far away and started 'people-watching'. I caught this, does it get any more 'traditional'? A mother and child, African style, no wonder they often have a tight bond later in life. FEMME...

An exotic beauty in Bruges. She was very noticeable, because of her looks, her headgear but mostly her very groomed make-up and appearance. In Western cultures, the ideal of feminine appearance has traditionally included long, flowing hair, light skin, a narrow waist, and little or no body hair or facial hair. In other cultures, however, expectations are different. For example, in many parts of the world, underarm hair is not considered unfeminine. In contemporary Western culture thinness and femininity are linked, but in past eras heavy women were considered more feminine than thin ones. Similarly, today the colour pink is strongly associated with femininity, whereas in the early 1900 pink was associated with boys and blue with girls. CAN’T WAIT…

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ I declare February LOVE, romance and beauty month. The many aspects of love. EMOTION IN PHOTOGRAPHY! M is for the miracle of being. O is for its origin in love. T is for the tenderness of seeing. H is for a home no wind can move. E is for the ecstasy of living. R is for the recklessness of giving. As one myself, I know what it means, all the love and the heartache, the joys and the tears, the happiness and sadness, the life long commitment, the eternal lifeline no matter what! It's not easy being a good parent, no schools except the school of life, you often only know you didn't do it quite right when it is too late! It's 10 times harder to correct! But, when you do get it right, the feeling is magic, you're proud. It's a prowess! Most people will know or be able to imagine that towards the end of those 9 long months the tension and anticipation is rising, the baby can't come soon enough now. She had chosen not to know the sex of the baby but was now getting curious to know, boy or girl? I wish you all a very good day and thanx for all your kind words, time, comments and likes. THAT'S AMORE...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ I declare February LOVE, romance and beauty month. They had a kiss. An intimate moment, an expression of amorousness, a caress or touch with the lips. They got lost in their own new world, forgot we were there, just for a moment... The lights were in place, it was back to the real business. This was one of the 'unofficial' photographs, I showed them, yes, they thought they were fun, but also a bit embarrassing, however, this was not what they 'wanted', people often have a predilection when they come to a photo studio! It is EXTREMELY important to listen VERY carefully to your clients. They had come for a portrait, celebrating their engagement, that's what they went home with. I did take those images for myself anyway. THANX for ALL your comments and visits, so appreciated. ALL ABOUT LOVE…

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ This is my long time friend,Yvan and his lovely partner. I finally was able to convince her to join him in front of the camera, that pleased him, he grabbed her hand, held it over his heart and said something naughty and private... He is an extremely romantic man, the ladies like him and he's always charming to the ladies, but this is his true love, they are a wonderful couple. A man with many hats, loads of happy and sad stories, a wealth of interesting philosophies, tons of talents, a fantastic sense of humour, an enormous joie de vivre, superb art de vivre, great integrity and above all a very big heart in the right place. I salute him. From the series: Ex-and impressions. A fantastic exercise in lighting portraits correctly, and fill them with emotion! Taken on my Nikon F4, negs scanned and retouched lovingly! THE PHOTOGRAPHER... Paul

FUN in THE STUDIO… It is always best, during a studio session no matter how hot or stressful it is, to maintain a sense of humour amongst the more serious portraits. This was such a moment; where Paul made a gesture that makes us laugh whenever we see someone do this… I love his eyes, they can look naughty just like this! WILLEM VERMANDERE, THE SCULPTOR and his PASSION..

Willem Vermandere is a famous and much celebrated Belgian Artist. My friend is a sculptor, singer-songwriter, musician, writer, poet and painter, but also a wonderful philosopher and raconteur. We always enjoy a get together when we visit the Continent, this time no different! Here, after a whole animated discussion about why we do what we do, how to do it well etc... we walked to the place where his carefully chosen 'stones' are, he told us the names, where they came from, how he splits them and we came back to our earlier conversation, about PASSION!!! You have to have PASSION for your medium! Because, without the wind of passion in your sails, your ship will never leave harbour. LOL Here he was in front of one of two massive sculptures, commissioned by the town of Nieuwpoort/Flanders, to stand proudly on the promenade. No matter the rain: PASSION! Such moments are pure magic. MY FOCAL POINT...

important in a composition to have one, but also in life? Still at the Roger Raveel museum. Roger Raveel was a Belgian painter whose work is often associated with pop art because of its depiction of everyday objects. Raveel's style evolved throughout his career, from abstract to figurative. Great for some more creative photography, yes a complete break from the ‘usual’. AWE…

Awe is difficult to define, and the meaning of the word has changed over time. Related concepts are wonder, admiration, elevation, and the sublime. In Awe: The Delights and Dangers of Our Eleventh Emotion, neuropsychologist and positive psychology guru Pearsall presents a phenomenological study of awe. He defines awe as an "overwhelming and bewildering sense of connection with a startling universe that is usually far beyond the narrow band of our consciousness." Pearsall sees awe as the 11th emotion, beyond those now scientifically accepted (i.e., love, fear, sadness, embarrassment, curiosity, pride, enjoyment, despair, guilt, and anger). Most definitions allow for awe to be a positive or a negative experience, but when asked to describe events that elicit awe, most people only cite positive experiences. It was never discussed what Willem’s opinion/emotion was. Personally, as usual, there were works I like, works I did not like, a lot I did NOT understand? Art is so very subjective! What I like here is, two men, in black with headgear, not looking at each other… Thanks, M, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY MY IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.co.uk

PUZZLEMENT...

a feeling of being confused because something is difficult to understand... Is 'art' to be understood? Is it just to be absorbed/digested? I also stood there in wonder what to make of it? They say, if it releases 'any' emotion at all, it works? So the series continues, Willem Vermandere at the Roger Raveel museum. I did not set out to make a reportage, it just happened, I took only a few photos, I am surprised at the moments that I chose. Yes, a place that gets the creative juices flowing? THE CONCLUSION…

Art has long been controversial, that is to say disliked by some viewers, for a wide variety of reasons. Disputes as to whether or not to classify something as a work of art are referred to as classificatory disputes about art. Making judgments of value requires a basis for criticism. At the simplest level, a way to determine whether the impact of the object on the senses meets the criteria to be considered art is whether it is perceived to be attractive or repulsive. Though perception is always coloured by experience, and is necessarily subjective, it is commonly understood that what is not somehow aesthetically satisfying cannot be art. However, "good" art is not always or even regularly aesthetically appealing to a majority of viewers. In other words, an artist's prime motivation need not be the pursuit of the aesthetic. Also, art often depicts terrible images made for social, moral, or thought-provoking reasons. My conclusion? I, at last, know what I like and what I do NOT like… I think I enjoyed the architecture more than most of the paintings, LOL, great for some more creative photography, yes a complete break from the ‘usual’. ARTIGO REVEALED...

This is the last in this series and will hopefully reveal the answer. It was in the Musee des Beaux Arts in Brussels, a room was built by an artist, unfortunately haven't got his name anymore (sorry), the ceiling and floor plus two walls were mirrored, two walls had painted stripes and lightstrips. You were right it was not easy to photograph. ART +VERTIGO=ARTIGO, tee hee. In this one, Paul is pretending to fall, you really had the feeling of vertigo in this special piece of Art. MODERN TIMES…

From a very young age you see children with mobile phones and tablets nowadays. I personally think that it is still a very expensive must have 'gadget'? How did we all ever survive without it???????? On the other hand, if used well, it gives access to knowledge and teaches them as they grow up, what we had to learn. Like everything else, there are pro’s and con’s! FRIENDS…

DAY 5 Not many are friends THAT long nowadays, 46 years, people move more, then loose sight. Not here, we live in different countries but always see each other when we can. A PARODY, EVER SO GENTLY…

One day, I got this idea, our dog had a ‘bone’, I went and stood… like the soldier, without the weapon, the dog came and tried to get to his bone, ever so gently…. my parody. Benetton started off as a fashion label for the young, designing sweaters for people across the globe. As their market expanded their concept of United Colors spread to encompass people of different races and sensitising them to the idea of tolerance, peace and respect for diversity. Benetton began working with photographer Oliviero Toscani. In the Feb 92 campaign the communication of Benetton raised much controversy and created a global scandal. The images of a man dying of aids, a soldier gripping a human thigh bone, a man assassinated by the mafia, a car on fire, and a ship being stormed by immigrants. All these photos were not taken for the advertising campaign but where rather subjects of the real world used for conveying the news. It raised questions as to whether advertising and marketing for a product should actually focus on subjects other than the companies product? A Liberian guerrilla soldier gripping a human thigh bone, rifle slung across his back… Represents a terrible vision that arouses anxious questions about colonialism, racism and cultural poverty. An image that left an impression. thanx for viewing, always interested in what you have to say! 'ANTWAARPSE' FLAIR...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! ANTWERP FLAIR... the people from Antwerp in Belgium are known (sometimes mocked and loathed) for their flair and panache which is often misconstrued as arrogance and bravado. I like their sense of humour. IN FULL RAGALIA…

A bearskin is a tall fur cap, usually worn as part of a ceremonial military uniform. Traditionally, the bearskin was the headgear of grenadiers and it is still worn by grenadier and guards regiments in various armies. After defeating Napoleon at Waterloo, the 1st Foot Guards was renamed the Grenadier Guards and their entire regiment adopted the bearskin covers for their ceremonial dress. The purpose appears to have been to add to the apparent height and impressive appearance of these troops both on the parade ground and the battlefield. A Bearskin weighs 680 grams. THE WEAVER…

Tour of Europe 04 2016
Day 12 THE WEAVER… The boat tour over, we have a refreshment on a terrace of the most iconic place in Brugge? De Rozenhoedkaai(Pink/Rose Hat Quay literally, but the proper meaning is rosary, the reason was that stalls were set up at that spot selling rosaries). And onwards we go. On the picturesque Fish-market of Brugge, we meet this weaver from Latvia again. Last Summer we bought a scarf for Paul here, now we meet him: the creative textile designer – weaver Janis Rozentals He began his career in the Old Town Riga sand for several years wove on the wheeled loom and sold the scarves, all over the world. Made out of linen, they are beautiful. He loves Bruges. Of course, we go home, with… yes, you’ve guessed it, another scarf! If you are interested in seeing a dedicated artist at work, a fascinating movie here. SPINNING THE WOOL...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ An old craft. Not something you see often these days, where clothing has become so cheap? Louet wheels treadle lightly, are low maintenance and nearly adjustment free and can be modified with accessories for the expert spinner. Louet wheels were originally geared towards spinning medium to heavy yarns. Although bobbins and flyers are available for spinning this type of yarn, the standard wheels have been redesigned to be more suitable for spinning fine to medium yarns. This type of wheel is powered by the spinner's foot rather than their hand or a motor. The spinner sits and pumps a foot treadle that turns the drive wheel via a crankshaft and a connecting rod. This leaves both hands free for drafting the fibres, which is necessary in the short draw spinning technique, which is often used on this type of wheel. ROSA, THE COUNTRY PUB LANDLADY...

May I present to you, Rosa, the country pub landlady (for the Flemish: de boerecafebazin). The lady with Roses on her outragous beer-taps because of her name. It was that same afternoon the weather broke, Paul and I wanted to photograph the canals, by the time we arrived there it started to rain, first just a few drops, very soon it was pouring. There was too much wind, it would blow over by the time we had a cup of coffee, Suddenly amongst the trees, yes a small country pub, we ran in, it was empty, out of the kitchen came this lady, we chatted, I saw the ‘floral’ beer taps, her floral top and the small vase with dried Hortensia. I asked if we could take her photograph, she smiled a bit nervously, said in a smokey voice – she didn’t stick well on paper- I joked back and replied – that was in the old days- Quickly she ran into her kitchen to put a comb through her hair, once a woman always a woman, he? SPANISH TILES...

YELLOW/GREEN/BLUE... the Spanish people love their glazed colourful tiles and use them on floors, on walls, inside and outside, made with great Artistry and creativity, they liven up the place and are part of the architecture. We were on a photo assignment on Fuerteventura, with little free time, but still enough. These were 4 flights of stairs, a real eyeteaser. Standing in front of it, it looked like a tall wall, I asked a model to go and sit on the first landing, free and comfortable, not posed. I have it with all the steps, but the place was surrounded by palm trees, it was impossible to get a picture without shadow, this was over the midday= pounding bright light, here the least, so I decided to go for a closer comp. SHY STERGIOS...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ This is the shop-owner, it was evening, most people at table, he sat outside with a friend, he had dreadlocks and a kind face. We had a lovely chat afterwards and I came home with bags of Cretan herbs, honey and their famous saffron. So everybody happy. (?) WHAT A COLOURFUL WORLD...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! In Scarborough, on the South Bay there is also a famous Spa, I'm not sure if this is part of it, but just above the beach at the bottom of the cliff, I saw the row of coloured doors, I suspect in summer these cabins you can use to get changed? I was a bit disappointed, I'd spotted them from far away, was eager and excited to photograph them, but when I got there, it didn't work out, the light had gone, there were a lot of 'obstacles', the verge, lockers, dustbins, couldn't get a good angle. Eventually walked away, looked back and saw this... It is a 'SNAP' SHOT (no, I don't do snapshot!!! tee hee) Just had the time to lift my camera to my eye, straight, and shoot before she walked out of my frame... It's ALL about colour. A MOTHER...

It is the celebration of MOTHER in England today. A Mother M is for the miracle of being. O is for its origin in love. T is for the tenderness of seeing. H is for a home no wind can move. E is for the ecstasy of living. R is for the recklessness of giving. A VARIATION: M-O-T-H-E-R "M" is for the million things she gave me, "O" means only that she's growing old, "T" is for the tears she shed to save me, "H" is for her heart of purest gold; "E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining, "R" means right, and right she'll always be, Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER," A word that means the world to me. - Howard Johnson I wrote in the description of the b/w, yesterday, that I first took colour to put them at ease, well, here it is. I knew it was a risk, there might not be a second chance, but this was the camera I was holding, the other in the back of the car... I'd love to know what it is and why, that so often people prefer portraits in b/w. Personally I like them both, but each for their own different qualities. I was there, that adds an extra dimension, memories, emotions and excitement. I love the way that bit of 'femininity' peeps out! My sons and their families are far away from me, on the Continent, different countries, I know they love and respect me, but EVERY day is Mother's day, not that just ONE commercial day... BILL… for MOVEMBER

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide. A BRIEF POSE…

The train operator and the stoker, they posed and then were off, in a billow of smoke. Talk about grab photo’s!! Pickering, North-Yorkshire, towards the Heritage Coast, you have charming Pickering, an ancient market town and civil parish, on the border of the North York Moors National Park. It sits at the foot of the Moors, overlooking the Vale of Pickering to the south. According to legend the town was founded by a certain king Peredurus around 270BC; however the town as it exists today is of medieval origin. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, the old station is kept in forties style, is run by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust but is mostly operated and staffed by volunteers! Both on and off the trains! magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2008/01/all-shades-of-grey.html I love the frazzled overalls, the steam and the dirt, the stoker..., it almost looks like a charcoal drawing. I love the beautiful tools that are our hands, FOR MORE ON THIS and other anecdotes.. meditation on subject of photography. A BRIEF MOMENT of REST…

Giving people time to get on and off, the train driver is relaxed, waiting for his cuppa and then, on again. At the old station in Pickering, North-Yorkshire... Most of the passengers may not realise how reliant upon volunteers the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is. With the magnificent steam engines, beautiful rural stations and smartly uniformed staff, a visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is like taking a step back in time. From the smoke and steam pouring from the engines to the cosy wood-panelled carriages and friendly conductor service, the railway is both lovingly preserved and charmingly authentic. Itís also the perfect starting point for a day out, whether you’re travelling between the rugged Yorkshire villages, hiking on the wind swept moors or spending a day by the seaside in Whitby... SMEARED STOKER… A brief moment in time.

Fireman or stoker is the job title for someone whose job is to tend the fire for the running of a steam engine. On steam locomotives the term fireman is usually used, the firemen were not usually responsible for initially preparing locomotives and lighting their fire. As a locomotive boiler takes several hours to heat up, and a too-rapid fire-raising can cause excess wear on a boiler, this task was usually performed by fire lighters working some hours before the fireman's main shift started. Only on small railways, or on narrow-gauge locomotives with smaller and faster-warming boilers, was the fire lit by the fireman. Whoever was responsible for fire-raising would clear the ash from the firebox ashpan prior to lighting the fire, adding water to the engine's boiler, making sure there is a proper supply of fuel for the engine aboard before starting journeys, starting the fire, raising or banking the fire as appropriate for the amount of power needed along particular parts of the route… Pickering, The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, the old station is kept in forties style, is run by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust but is mostly operated and staffed by volunteers! All very nostalgic, a brief moment in time. MY FRIEND, ROBERT EMERSON.

I was nominated, the world through my eyes. SEVEN. Yes, I DO make portraits, I love good people and here was one of them. MY FRIEND, ROBERT EMERSON. This is Robert, my friend, who is no more, I just heard he died last month (that was in 2007)! All his life, except for the war, he lived in Flamborough, born into a proud family of fishermen; he was also a life-long volunteer of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. He eyes shone when he told me that all the boats belonging to him and his family, had lovely names like ‘Madeleine Isabella’ and their signature is a white rose, the Yorkshire symbol! Now there is a boat called:ROBERT EMERSON. It is a tradition that each fishing places gives work to the whole family, they have their own symbols and their own cable-knitting patterns in the jerseys... so if an accident happened, they would be recognised! He still went out to inspect his crab pots every early morning, well in his eighties, the women cleaned, prepared and dressed the crabs, most for the fishmongers on markets(which he delivered himself), the rest was for the back of his van, parked in his place at Smuggler’s Cove, where he sold them, and that’s how we met. I love fresh crabs and he loved people I remember the times we sat together, chatting and laughing, wonderful man. I still find it difficult to go back... We miss him still! Read the whole story HERE: magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2007/08/rip-my-friend-from-flamb... THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PORTRAIT in PHOTOGRAPHY!

Jane Bown said: "A portrait is not taken but given!" The trend today, 2015 is: natural and unadulterated and authentic. The circumstances here, Flanders, the beach, me sitting and staring at the sea, this gent passes behind me, I turn, grab camera and courage, and I'm "given" the portrait... LOL The proper portrait, too often underestimated (NO, SELFIES DO NOT COUNT), yet it is the perfect recording of our history, forever changing lifestyles, the all important memories... Cameras only the tools of the trade, note I write 'cameras', no distinction, it is my firm conviction that it is the person using the tools that is responsible for the result. Like in everything else, there’s ever changing TREND. You only have to look at the family/school/wedding portrait of 50-20 years ago!!!!!!!! A dynamic portrait like this one here, would not have been possible, everything was: in studio, set up,neatly 'all-in', best clothes, from a respectable distance. I like the way it's going, but it's taken some time... Anybody (hate the question) who asks me: 'and, what do you photograph?' makes me think, my answer would be the BEAUTY in everything? However I must admit, portraiture may be the most difficult discipline, I find it also the most rewarding! Make the best of your day, Magda (~.~) http://magdaindigo.blogspot.co.uk/2007/03/importance-of-portrait-in-photography.html For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS: www.indigo2photography.co.uk/magda-portfolio.htm Please do not use this image on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved

LIVE AND LET LIVE...

AB FAV... ABsolute FAVourites... I WILL UPLOAD A PERSONAL FAVE OF MINE EVERY DAY NOW, an image that I am particularly proud of, why don't you join me? ONLY THE BEST? Copy the top text? Just put AB FAV? There are photos that mean a lot and never seem to get the attention they deserve? Show them now. For me, what I discover is that they are often images with a story in/behind them. Either that or a lot of emotion. Have fun! This man was a regular visitor in our gallery; he loved the red wine we served. A marginal, shunned by most people because of his appearance, one of the kindest men I ever had the pleasure to meet. From a wealthy family, he is a medical doctor, with specialisations in 4 different fields. After years working in Africa, burnt out, unwell, he lived the days as they came and as he liked them. Eating only when he was hungry, which wasn’t very often, but when he did, he treated himself to the very best, he loved lobster! He loved the finer things in life, his special brand of cigarillos. A great sense of humour, a delight to converse with, a charming man with great sensitivity... I saw it too often, to my disgust, those making fun of him, when it was suddenly whispered in their ear that he was a Dr., etc… they’d either slime up to him or avoid him completely. AAhh, la divina comedia!!! This is the only image I ever took of him at one of our vernissages, he didn’t like to be photographed (his words: “not even by us”). I had given him my word I wouldn’t, that one time I got his permission, one of his better days… Don’t judge people, certainly not by their appearance, just listen to their heart and yours? Have a sweet day, and thanx for visiting, Magda, (*_*) This will probably be another image that will get viewed a lot but receives few comments, I always wonder why that is. Does the reality of our world frighten? This is a sincere concern and curiosity? "A photojournalist is a witness to an event or story, standing in for all those people that have not seen it for themselves. Photographing someone who finds themselves in unfortunate circumstances should only be done in my opinion if the photographer is driven by seeking show the truth and is socially and morally aware. Often the best images, the ones with authenticity and integrity are taken by photojournalists who are deeply concerned about their subjects. The antithesis of this is the photographer that snaps shots of unfortunate people because they're easy targets or because they want to sensationalise." -- Paul Indigo (quote of the day)

CHEERS...

This was a guest in our gallery. We got such a wonderful mixture of people in. A very cheery Englishman, quite a character. We all had a drink together and some great chats. I've been so fortunate to meet some great people in my life! Never seen myself as a portrait photographer and yet I do seem to have so many, hhhhmmmmmmm! You know by now that I am a 'purist? GLAD--- TIMES, A FLOWER-SELLER...

Many people ask me, you must spend a fortune on flowers!!! No, I have good suppliers and a garden? This used to be one of my favourite flower-sellers, on a market, he'd keep things aside for me that he thought I might be interested in. He's retired now. It is always better to have a good rapport and a laugh with the people you buy from, fishmonger, butcher, flower-man, lol, if it is 'personal' you get a fair deal! Oke, sometimes there are 'blemishes', imperfections, but ONE perfect one is enough, and as I wrote before, the others often more interesting. View Large and On PROPER Black Giving my flowers SOUL? THE THREE GARDENERS OF BUTTECRAMBE...

With few exceptions, the buildings and houses in Buttercrambe are owned by the Darley estate - which is run by George Winn-Darley, resident of Aldby Park - he is living there at the moment , even though there was a big fire there in Dec 1999 (we photographed the mansion on assignment in September 1999). Buttercrambe is a small village in the Buttercrambe with Bossall civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. In 1840 Buttercrambe had a population of 176, with a pub, a miller, a coal merchant, a smith and a watchmaker, together with 5 farmers listed in the trade directory. Henry Darley was at Aldby Park. By 1872, the pub was no longer present, and now the village has very few facilities. This Victorian Walled garden is a real meeting place, people buying vegs, perusing the green-houses chosing plants, it is a way of life, fast disappearing, great that England is still so very traditinal! Hanging on. There is a market, walled organic kitchen garden on the site, with grassland and a wild meadow beyond the garden, which has a small shop, but otherwise it is down to Stamford Bridge, about 3 miles away - and no bus service. These are the 3 'latest' gardeners, the one took over from the other... The top one is the eldest, the left one the next, who the old gardener called the 'young' gardener, lol. I'll upload them 'separate'... On the right is the latest one... for how much longer sadly, who will take over from this 'youngster'? MAN OF NATURE...

series 'OF PEOPLE, HATS & EXPRESSIONS'. This is the 'young' gardener at Buttercrambe (see yesterday). Very comfortable in his skin, at peace with himself, he loves and lives Nature. Extremely knowledgeable, it was a pleasure to listen to him as we walked around the Victorian walled garden. His proud, kind lady does the till in a small shed. Whatever they (everybody on the Estate) can't eat gets sold, oke, the tomatoes, carrots and potatoes had the strangest shapes but, the taste was heavenly, it reminded me of my childhood. I don't normally buy organic, think it's a bit of a con, tried it, no difference to me, except in my purse! This though was better than anything I'd ever grown myself, must be that Yorkshire 'muck' or... something in the water? A CONTENT GENT...

series 'OF PEOPLE, HATS & EXPRESSIONS'. On our quest through Yorkshire, we came across the village of Buttercrambe. There was a nursery, an old Victorian walled garden, still belonging to the mansion (the big house as they call it). The 'old' gardener was this wonderful gent, who just happened to be there, telling us all about things that had happened and that he felt we should know. His juicy Yorkshire accent still singing in my head, the fragrant tobacco from his pipe, another rarity these days, his careful dress sense, his humour and kindness make him unforgettable. Now there was the 'young' gardener... (see next) Some people can really make my day, if you let them and are willing to listen and give them a bit of time and show some interest. There are a lot of lonely people in this world of 'fast and furious' communication. AUTUMNAL OUTING...

Nothing Gold Can Stay poem by Robert Frost (1923) Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. It all looked very leisurely, I was photographing when I heard the clopin-clopant... I turned, pointed and got this image! TODAY... EVERYONE IS A PHOTOGRAPHER?

magdaindigo.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/today-everyone-is-phot... Everywhere you go, people are pointing ALL kinds of devices at everything. Phones, tablets, big and small cameras. Do they take the time to 'stand and stare'? Actually enjoy the moment? The view? Well everything IS getting very well documented that's for sure. How many photos are actually seen NOT on a screen? In print? So many questions... It is great to see people having fun with their 'gadgets'. But I am a thinker... and what happens to all those images? Where-ever I go, people shove their phone under my nose, and start flicking through the hundreds of bad photos they took of the same subject, whether it is their children, damage on a car or, sigh, the holiday, LOL. You are smiling eh? It happened to you too! You also remained polite? Blurry, dark, too light, skew, oh yes, seen it all eh? Please, take a moment, think? Do NOT go for the quantity but THE QUALITY, just a brief look on the internet for a few pointers on composition will already help you a long way and give you so much pleasure in the long run! #ABFAV_FAVOURITE_SPRING_THEME Aah, at last, Spring and that first time your feet touch the still very cold water, what a thrill! I can feel this in his image. Chapel-Porth in Cornwall, Easter Monday. One of the many small Coves, a blazing sun, a healing wind, bouldering waves, the screech of gulls, the squeals of delight from children, the peace and joy in my soul... SUPPORT the PHOTOGRAPHER: BUY DIRECT! AAAHHH yes... I remember it well. These three little girls were gathering seaweed. A MOTHER'S LOVE... FOR ALL MOMS.LOL

A MOTHER'S LOVE... A little boy came up to his mother in the kitchen one evening while she was fixing supper, and handed her a piece of paper that he had been writing on. After his Mom dried her hands on an apron, she read it, and this is what it said: For cutting the grass: $5.00 For cleaning up my room this week: $1.00 For going to the store for you: $.50 Baby-sitting my kid brother while you went shopping: $.25 Taking out the garbage: $1.00 For getting a good report card: $5.00 For cleaning up and raking the yard: $2.00 Total owed: $14.75 Well, his mother looked at him standing there, and the boy could see the memories flaashing through her mind. She picked up the pen, turned over the paper he'd written on, and this is what she wrote: For the nine months I carried you while you were growing inside me: No Charge For all the nights that I've sat up with you, doctored and prayed for you: No Charge For all the trying times, and all the tears that you've caused through the years: No Charge For all the nights that were filled with dread, and for the worries I knew were ahead: No Charge For the toys, food, clothes, and even wiping your nose: No Charge Son, when you add it up, the cost of my love is: No Charge. When the boy finished reading what his mother had written, there were big tears in his eyes, and he looked straight at his mother and said, "Mom, I sure do love you." And then he took the pen and in great big letters he wrote: "PAID IN FULL". Lessons: You will never how much your parents' worth till you become a parent! MOTHER'S DAY, in the UK! Be a giver not an acquirer, especially with your parents. there is a lot to give, besides money. COZ MONEY IS THE WORST WAY OF MEASURING HAPPINESS... In the shops what I noticed was: for MOTHER'S DAY... flowers, Champagne, wine and chocolates????????????? Is that it mamas? HAHA, makes me laugh each year! Have a great one! ON NORMANDY BEACH.... D-DAY, JUNE 6...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! A cold February, the mid-term break, my son Michel was 19.Our goal to drive to the Mont St Michel. In France it’s also the holidays, we arrive In Honfleur only to find everything is ‘complet'!!! We push through to Caen and arrive there around midnight. The next day, it is 7/ 8 Beaufort, with great difficulty we get into the car without losing a door. We head for the coast, this weather does not scare us, we were raised with it. Just following the flow of roads, we arrive on small coastal routes and suddenly come to this beach. It stops you in your tracks. You’ve seen the documentaries and movies, you’ve heard the stories, but it’s all a long time ago, before you were even born. Here, it confronts you, the unexpected, the wreckage, still there, sombre monuments in the sea. I remember the images, my mind fills in the horror. I just stand there, my beautiful son running freely on this beach, where so many his age fell. This lonely figure in this vast emptiness of flat sand and sea.Paul, my husband (Paul Indigo) stands next to me, grabs my hand, he understands, he’s from South Africa, grew up with a different war. His uncles were S.A. war hero pilots, his grand-father a commander in the Belgian resistance. It links all of us. I can’t help thinking, why do nations and people only pull together when things are bad? Do we forget too soon? We owe those who fought, those who fell, our freedom and our present lifestyle. This is my THANK YOU to them, my sons live and I, as a mother am fortunate enough not to have to experience the fear of that farewell. Magda, (~_~) Today is D-Day, was June 6, 1944 — the day of the Normandy landings — initiating the Western Allied effort to liberate mainland Europe from Nazi occupation during World War II. By nightfall on June 6, more than 9,000 Allied soldiers were dead or wounded, but more than 100,000 had made it ashore, securing French coastal villages and eventually the rest of the occupied countries. WE OWE THEM OUR FREEDOM! More HERE:magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2007/04/power-of-emotion-in-imag... IN MY SOLITUDE...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! www.youtube.com/watch?v=6d4KCZwUxRU&feature=related At Robin Hoods Bay, as the tide came in, less and less was visible of the rocks and more and more the seaweed that had been 'basking' in the sun, started to sway in the tidal waters. I looked up and saw this, he stood there for quite some time, contemplative, in his peaceful solitude. ON SOUTH AFRICA'S BEACH...

My AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ ON SOUTH AFRICA'S BEACH... A beach near Cape Town, now ALL can enjoy it, the gentle breeze and sun of Spring, the warmth of the sand on the soles of their feet... there was a time these ladies would not have been 'allowed' there... unimaginable for me, who grew up in Europe! One of my favourite images! MARE TRANQUILLITATIS...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! Sea of Tranquillity, to be found on the Moon, however that Sunday, this is what the normally wild, turbulent and often unpredictable North Sea looked like. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pa0iNTEw6WQ ' It were 't end of 't day' ( pure Yorkshire accent!) We had walked way down through the picturesque village of Robin Hood's Bay, stayed on the beach quite some time, taking our shots as the tide steadily came in, then, the sun disappeared behind the top, we did the trek back up, till we reached the sun again. Many were still enjoying the balmy beauty of the evening. I saw this couple on a bench, they did not talk, only looking silently and like us, taking it all in, at some point they hugged, I made my composition... my last image of that day... Le Petit Pêcheur et son chien…

#ABFAV_FAVOURITE_REFLECTIONS_THEME Staithes, North-Yorkshire Heritage Coast... we had combed the beaches, the quay-sides, boats, we'd met new people and chatted, yes taken loads of images. The tide was coming in fast, the sun was getting lower... we rested out in the shade on a bench, before going for a meal, taking it all in, when this little chap in a bright yellow T-shirt, green net over his shoulder, accompanied by his faithful friend appeared in front of us... Another treasured moment! MOMENT of SOLITUDE...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=oD1dWW4_O0w&list=PL673E48271B... SWEET SOLITUDE... There are positive moments of solitude, which many of us 'need' and enjoy? I was walking on the beach, waiting what kind of a sunset it would be, unwinding from a busy day... I saw this young woman standing, playing with the incoming waves, her sandals nonchalantly dangling by the hand, turned deep into herself. It looked like she was dancing to an inner tune, but she wasn't listening to music, what I saw was the cord to hold her sunglasses. I love the atmosphere and emotion in this image, taken with the 300mm lens, but, it was quite a 'headache' to print. COMINGS AND GOINGS @SCHIPHOL...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! This IS the link to a live and exclusive interview!!! I get so many questions every day, I thought it might be a good idea, so here goes: Best view it Large, in HD, AND it is 17 minutes!!!! Sit back and ENJOY. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u1aOqA4KdM For those who viewed it already, thank you for your feedback, lovely! Plane delayed for one hour, due to heavy snow and frost back home, they had to de-ice everything... I'd already passed all the checks and controls, so, just the looooooong terminal H, a 'tunnel' divided by a glass wall, on the one side arrivals, my side the departures. People coming and going, going and coming. It was the perfect moment to experiment some with my new present, the Nikon Coolpix P1. I was not won over yet, still prefered my trusted Nikon F4 and film, however, it is so much easier and silent to take shots of people without them being aware... you see the result, and can wait for the next group, the next decisive moment... That was when I was still only shooting with film on my super Nikons F4!... now it is ONLY digital, except when the client demands otherwise, and some do! HUMAN TRIPOD...

Paul @ work... taking portraits of me, trying out yet another light set-up, forever learning and experimenting.TODAY... EVERYONE IS A PHOTOGRAPHER?( www.magdaindigo.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/today-everyone-is-photographer.html ) AND THEN... THERE IS THE PROPER PHOTOGRAPHER! ( www.magdaindigo.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/and-then-there-is-proper-photographer.html ) That is the person who invested a lot of time, money and effort... with great pleasure and passion? Learned HOW to be a photographer, what it all means! The technical and human ins and outs, learned about light, in studio and in nature, knows about composition. Yes, once you know the rules: THEN you can become 'creative'... and break them! None of this depends on the size or the price of the camera! A camera is simply a tool. It WILL ALWAYS be the person behind the camera that makes the photo! The minimum requirement is to understand aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length. And a good photographer can take a good picture with a good camera, but a GREAT photographer can take GREAT pictures even with a phone? I used to take my camera everywhere with me, not anymore and okay it DOES happen that I see a shot, well I take it with my mind's eye and shrug? I am not a photo-journalist, so if I miss it... I miss it. There is a time for seeing and enjoying and then a time for the 'passion'. How do you recognise a proper photographer? No, not necessarily the one with the most gear, gadgets or the heaviest camera-bag, LOL. Many love it, I see it all the time and it makes me smile. It is the consistency, the built-up portfolio, the overall quality of the work. We had the couple alone for a brief time, and took them to the end of the beautiful garden, Ullswater Lake (in the unique Lake-District) , we had been briefed well, however, there are ALWAYS those unforgettable and unmissable moments. That's why wedding reportage is so stressful for a photographer, you have to stay sharp and focused ALL day long... if you want to do it WELL! TIMELESS TRADITION...

Muslim weddings are vibrant affairs and involve a lot of preparation. It blends in a lot of colours, noise, excitement, delicious food and reflects the ethnic diversity of the beautiful Continent of Asia. I must admit when I saw this scene, it was like something historic, a tradition that had barely changed for centuries. A fantastic get-together of family and friends, children and babies all in their finery ... I love all the expressions, poses, the involvement and intensity, reminds me of a Renaissance painting... BUTTTERFLY...

this was taken at a wedding, the bride had chosen a theme of 'BUTTERFLY' for her special day. EAST AND WEST? CAN MEET!!!!

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ EAST AND WEST? CAN MEET!!!! THE BALLAD OF EAST AND WEST. Rudyard Kipling Poems Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet, Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God's great Judgment Seat; But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth, When two strong men stand face to face, tho' they come from the ends of the earth! (Excerpt) This image means so much to me, it came about (like many good things in life) by sheer luck. We had this couple in our studio for a portrait session. She is the gentlest, sweetest lady you can imagine. Of Indian descent, born in Africa, just like her husband, they met in England, fell in love, married and after all these years, are still very much in love, there ís an ease about them and we all share a great sense of humour. She was waiting for him to join her; he was looking through the lens, talking to Paul about the whole set-up, technicalities and cameras. I sat next to her for a chat; we suddenly realised that we both wore a long skirt, a pink top! We sat in the same way, no, this is not posed!!! So I asked Paul to push the shutter. (In our book, it is not the one who pushes the shutter, but the one who has the idea, that the photo belongs to ) I treasure her as my friend, I respect her for her religion and beliefs, I admire her for her beauty, both in and out, if there were more people like her, the world would be a better place. East and West have firmly met! Have a sweet day and thanx for visiting, Magda (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.com IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) HAPPY DIWALI...

AB FAV 2 for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ HAPPY DIWALI I give you light... It is tomorrow, however in India, they are celebrating it already. Diwālī is the Hindu Festival of Lights. For Jains it is one of the most important festivals, and beginning of the Jain year. I brought in the garden lights ( 8 plastic tubes with LED lights inside), decided to have some fun with them in the studio again. Here I'm using 2 tubes, I tried different techniques with the studio-lights. To freeze me=washed out the lights too much. So, the old joke was always that photographers do it in the dark! Here's PROOF! A happy Diwali to All friends around the world. Magda (*_*) IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) ASPECTS of WOMAN...

I know who I am, Paul knows who I am, my sons, family and friends know who I am! Many people do not know who I am, all they see is different facets of the real me. One piece of the puzzle… This is the playful aspect, only one particular ‘look’, another way in which I can be viewed by the mind. The angle here of each ‘facet’ is carefully considered, as the aim is to maximise the effect of the theatrical property. Many actors relied on props and other means of support when they were being photographed. Obviously I gathered a fair number of props over the years, so, on that day: mission over, some 'Space' left in the camera, a few more 'creative' ideas, lights still on, put on a wig a pair of outrageous shades and this is the result… The one thing that is the REAL me is the small silver camera, given to me by my best friend years ago, and that I always wear. Anybody who’s ever met me, they see this jewel, they know it’s me. Just some fun… and a different 'take' on a photographer's self-portrait, who is very serious about her work but doesn't take herself too seriously, a sense of humour helps you through everything and give you the 'good' wrinkles! JINGLE BELLS... A CHRISTMAS THEME.

More fun bells! Time for the decorations to come out, rediscovering old and new memories. Make the home festive, another way of being creative, goes together with the usual upset of lights not working, untangling ribbon I had so carefully packed... A number of times I'd put this 'wreath' of brass bells and red ribbon, hanging on one of our inner doors, on my head for fun (and because I'm a bit mad???), now it was serious! Crowned by the jingling bells, lol! Thank you Paul Indigo for the portrait. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2012... ASPECTS...

) www.youtube.com/watch?v=PF7cLnijKBs James Brown & Luciano Pavarotti - It's a Man's World... beautiful... A small shrimp trawler, the hardship of fishing during the night, managed by a skipper and his mate… A veterinary surgeon performing complicated operations… Ballet dancers in their studios, showing us the tough regime and performing their art… A brief glimpse into the interesting world of travellers… The behind the scenes of a casino, where you really get the sense of drama that goes on there often, it’s a place of ‘mysterious mood’ to me… Several times travelled through Europe, in a truck, a world within our world… a world people do not know much about, day and night, monotonous drives on looooong stretches of road, and the people that transport EVERYTHING we have in our homes? As a woman, to visit and get the tour of a mosque, being shown and everything… A lady at her home, mother and wife, waiting for a ‘better’ day, so that I could take portraits of her, with her boys, her husband… because she was terminally ill with cancer… The world of horse-breeders, farmers, bikers, fish-smokers, painters, glass-artist, sculptors, singers, actors, business entrepreneurs, politicians and so many more... I photographed the new-borns, the dying and the dead, the young, the’ in love’, the sad and lonely, the happy, the old, been in the presence of world-famous people… people are people to me… I enjoyed it, did it ALL with the respect it deserves!… Yes, I enjoy it, in case you had not received that message yet, lol! There is very little, if anything, we cannot do! www.flickr.com/photos/9550033@N04/5502358791/ Get Real! Wise Women Speak...official trailer (for once I was in front of the camera not behind it; a self portrait was used as a still in the film). This film fits right in! THE BEAUTIFUL REFLECTION...

#ABFAV_FAVOURITE_REFLECTIONS_THEME THE BRIDE SAID TO THE MIRRORING WATER: "MIRROR, MIRROR of the LAKE... IT LOOKS LIKE I HAD TOO MUCH WEDDING-CAKE????? " LOL... We had the couple alone for a brief time, and took them to the end of the garden, Ullswater Lake (in the unique Lake-District) , we had been briefed well, however, there are ALWAYS those unforgettable and unmissable moments. That's why wedding reportage is so stressful for a photographer, you have to stay sharp and focused ALL day long... if you want to do it WELL! MAN IN THE MIRROR...REFLECTION...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5vz6iwV38U&feature=related Interupting for Reflection DAY!!! Out on a photoshoot, Paul setting things up for an image he had 'seen'. Me, I was patiently waiting in the car when I saw him in the mirror ... We can give each other the respect, space and ALL the time in the world for photography! When you remember me, it means you have carried something of who I am with you, that I have left some mark of who I am on who you are. It means that you can summon me back to your mind even though countless years and miles may stand between us. When I'm feeling most ghost-like, it's your remembering that helps remind me that I actually exist. - Frederick Buechner American writer (b. 1926) With love to you and thank you for ALL your faves and comments, M, (* _ *) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY OUR IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) ALL ABOARD…

Day 1 Then suddenly this lady appears, and it’s all go! It is getting more and more exciting. Yes we are leaving the island that is England. ! Anywhere you want to go in the world… you have to first get off, whether by foot, bike, car, boat, train or plane. The only ‘fixed’ link is in the South, the Channel Tunnel. Day 1 AND WE’RE OFF…

It doesn’t take long before we’re off! We find our cabin, and quickly get to the outer decks. The weather is beautiful, evening on board, full of happy people, some celebrating the end of their holidays and going home, others celebrating the start of the holidays and looking forward to adventures new. Like us. This is a more abstract image, the man looked melancholic, stared for quite some time at the churning water as the ferry set sail… Have a wonderful day, filled with love and beauty, M, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY MY IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.com Please do not use this image on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved

MY VALENTINE'S PRESENT...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ My youngest son, he was born on the 14th of February. He hates to be photographed. Got him in for some proper portraits. After the session he relaxed, we laughed and joked, the conversation turned to romanticism and falling in love, he showed us his boxer shorts to 'prove' he was a TRUE Valentine. I caught the moment, knowing how shy he is. A HAPPY BIRTHDAY Son. Again,I will not see him either today... Difficult! Love is quite an abstract concept, much easier to experience than to explain. You can compare love to the truth, for you must love to find the truth, but most will find love on more instinct levels. About the photo, well you know by now that I like a bit different, ‘beyond the obvious’, so here’s another approach to the theme Valentine! I had one shot left on my my film, too many times this happened to me... Developed and printed in the wet darkroom, I hand-coloured the hearts in on this black and white photo. Nothing digital about this! Happy Valentine’s day. THE PIANO-LESSON 2...

Another tender image, proper pure photography with the, nowadays, often forgotten important ingredient: EMOTION! It was a lovely moment, to see this father teach his little girl how to play Beethoven's "Fur Elise"... I saw the reflection in the piano afterwards, a nice added touch... Wishing you a very lovely day and thanx for viewing, M, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY OUR IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) THE KISS...

MY AB FAV... here for today: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ The little girl had been playing very intensely involved in a game, the adults having a vivid conversation, when she suddenly jumped up, ran to her daddy and gave him a kiss. I only had time to lift my camera to my eye and grab this precious moment. The settings all wrong... I was able to 'retrieve' what I wanted, everybody else would have deleted the raw file! A perfect example of the fact that it is NOT only about the technicality but the emotion in a photograph. In a studio, the light would be perfect but you would NEVER be able to 'create' a moment like this! EYE TO EYE…

On the first day of the year, we decided to have a portrait session in the studio. It was some time ago since we took ‘proper' photo’s of each other. What better way to start the New Year? LOL Paul, my husband, yes still crazy after all these years, we see eye to eye on most topics. In photography we each have our own style and vision. We respect that, share a fine sense of humour which made this such a pleasurable experience. Transferred this into black and white, love grainy low res, used to be very much my ‘thang’, in the days of film! ALL ABOUT EMOTION… WILLEM

Much as I liked the colour portrait yesterday, I feel this one, in mono has even deeper emotion! Emotion is any relatively brief conscious experience characterised by intense mental activity and a high degree of pleasure or displeasure. Emotions are complex. According to some theories, they are a state of feeling that results in physical and psychological changes that influence our behaviour. The physiology of emotion is closely linked to arousal of the nervous system with various states and strengths of arousal relating, apparently, to particular emotions. Emotion is also linked to behavioural tendency. Extroverted people are more likely to be social and express their emotions, while introverted people are more likely to be more socially withdrawn and conceal their emotions. Emotion is often the driving force behind motivation, positive or negative. Hope you feel it too? I wrote a blog on the importance of hands, HERE: http://magdaindigo.blogspot.co.uk/2009/01/importance-of-hands-in-portrait.html THANX, M, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY MY IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.com Please do not use this image on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved

ENRAPTURED…

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ WILLEM VERMANDERE and his new instrument... Willem Vermandere is a famous Belgian Artist. We always enjoy a get-together when we visit the Continent, this time no different! Well, he had just acquired a new instrument, an Autoharp (despite its name, the autoharp is not a harp at all, but a chorded zither), which he cradled with tremendous affection whilst his hands caressed the strings and he was clearly in his own musical world...forgetting for a brief moment that we were there? Such moments are pure magic. My friend is a singer, songwriter, musician, sculptor, writer, poet and painter, but also a wonderful philosopher and raconteur. In photography, emotion is the often discarded, yet so important ingredient! VALSE LENTE, slow waltz...

...This lady, one of the first to arrive at the dance hall, was well liked and cherished. She was obviously just there to see and enjoy her friends dancing. I had already taken several shots for a commissioned reportage, and sat down on the side to absorb the whole atmosphere; when out of the corner of my eye I saw movement. The one foot was moving with the tune, the stick tapping the beat, the rest of her body still, her face ecstatic. I wondered where she was in her memories, for a moment I saw the young girl emerging, a youthfulness in her shining eyes. The music stopped, applause, her shoulders sagged a bit; she leant a bit more heavily on her stick. Valse Lente... The slow waltz...
