TABLEAU VIVANT: A SECOND LIFE…

Scabiosa, dried, beautiful… must be one of my favourite images, and, euh, I have made a few? They are last year’s, I wrapped and stored them, they are extremely delicate, but I did manage to get some great photos out of them, together with the new ones this year, so more to come in this series. An idea I had for a year now, yes, Photography is often a matter of PATIENCE! LOL Another common name for members of this genus is pincushion flowers. Have a super day and thanx, M, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY MY IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.com IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) FIRST SIGN OF SPRING...

A first sign of life again. They stand in the rain and wind-swept garden, atremble, yes, but firm! Celebrated as a sign of Spring (I prefer to say, the end of Winter is in sight), snowdrops can form impressive carpets of white in areas where they are native or have been naturalised. All species of Galanthus have bulbs, linear leaves, and erect flowering stalks, destitute of leaves but bearing at the top a solitary pendulous bell-shaped flower. Do not think of your faults, still less of other's faults; look for what is good and strong, and try to imitate it. Your faults will drop off, like dead leaves, when their time comes. quote by John Ruskin Giving my flowers SOUL? My Soul Flowers on youtube and Studio Flowers 2011 I wish you all a very good week and thanx for all your kind words, time, comments and faves. Very much appreciated. SENSE and SENSIBILITY, double snowdrops...

Galanthus nivalis plenus These double Snowdrops have all the charm and grace of their single counterparts, but their multiple white petals make the flowers somewhat showier. Each flower is a masterpiece! The inside shows a double center with a pattern of fresh green stripes. Comp in camera! As a photographer, your main tools are: - you, as a person with a creative mind. - your eyes, using visual literacy. - your camera, keep it shipshape, handle it with the care and respect it deserves (even as a pro!!! Especially as a pro???). - the technical and practical knowledge you have acquired over the years! - sense and sensibility... Giving my flowers SOUL? I BOUGHT MYSELF ANOTHER POT OF SPRING...

This lovely blue is so very cheerful in the winter-awakening garden, THIS IS THE TRUE BLUE OF THESE TINY LITTLE FLOWERS! The common name for the genus is Grape Hyacinth, the name Muscari comes from the Greek muschos, musk, referring to the scent Giving my flowers SOUL? NOCTURNE... for WHITE MAGNOLIA

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtIW2r1EalM Chopin Nocturne Magnolia proctoriana, an abundant early flowering tree, with 6 very large pure white tepals. The tepals droops, which gives the plant a unique appearance. It is a upright tree with large fragrant white flowers. I love the different lichen on the fragile branches... probably not so great for the tree? I don't talk to flowers, they talk to me and I gladly listen! Brought these into the studio, they have a short life span, one was already wind-damaged, a must take portrait... For years I 'experimented' in the studio, to get that Flemish painter's light? Well, I was born in Flanders, it must be in my genes? LOL. I am very often inspired by music, just listen to the above... ANOTHER TREAT HERE, a first choice of some of my images: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcPJvTsFspk Lead and enjoy a good life, do and say things that enrich... and do not forget to tell the people close to you, how much you love them! THE GIFT of BEAUTY...

I have chosen a handful of narcissi mainly for their intoxicating fragrance. Tazetta Daffodils soleil d'or, yellow flowers with small orange rounded cups... These bunch-flowered Narcissi have up to 20 or more flowers arising from each flower stem and the crown being much less than half as long as the tepals, plus the crown isn't wrinkled or "crisped." When the buds first open, as you can see, the petals and the cups are a lemon yellow... Dwarf daffodils, the stems, bound with a ribbon, finished with a bow... in full glory Giving my flowers SOUL? Saw those white Frayed Tulips in the shop, one bouquet, with a tag saying 'Specialty Tulips'... There is also a 'TREND' in the flower world, I noticed over the years, different in countries too! I don't know if it's the same where you live, but the fashion is 'frayed', last week I bought a dress for my granddaughter, Paul looked with huge eyes; you are going to give this, but it is FRAYED!!! tee hee Of course I bought them... props he? these white 'frayed' tulips were just beautiful, some of the rarest I've seen. they were like this when I bought them, not closed and a bit 'wild'?
Fighting for a prime place in the photo, it looks like!
Playing in the studio with light and dof, all the time looking for new challenges and 'fresh' and creative images.
You encounter, easily, frayed egos everywhere in life, often a lack of self-confidence?
This image was used as many a book-cover...

A HAPPY VALENTINE...

"If We Put Our Heads Together, Our Hearts Will Tell Us What to Do" ONE HOT TULIP! Perspiring under the spotlights? Or just a 'hot' little number? LOVE WEEK. Red is often used to express love, as in Valentine’s Day, however it relates more to sexuality and lust, rather than love – love is expressed with pink. Ancient Greeks identified four forms of love: kinship or familiarity (in Greek, storge), friendship (philia), sexual and/or romantic desire (eros), and self-emptying or divine love (agape). LOVE is MANY things... SNOW-WHITES... HYACINTHS

The name hyacinth comes from the Greek Hyakinthos, a handsome young man who in Greek mythology was loved by the sun god Apollo. One day they were practising throwing the discus but the jealous god of the West Wind, who was also in love with Hyakinthos, blew the discus back and it fatally wounded him. From his blood grew a flower which the god Apollo named after him. The bulbs were first brought to Western Europe in the 16th century and were first cultivated in Austria in the 1500's. During the 17th and 18th centuries, like the tulip, it was to be found only in the collections of very rich flower collectors. Because of the hyacinth's pervasive perfume (used in perfumerie in France), the bulbs were exorbitantly expensive. Their heady fragrance, their delicacy and their inimitable spring feeling make them very desirable. THE von TRAPP HYACINTHS

A Blue series, a true blue not so common in the flower world and not easy to photograph well... We always have a smaller studio in our home, in between things there is time for some of my favourite photography, playing with lights... Went to the 'end of the market' for a cheap deal on flowers (my props), 6 bunches for £ 2, chose from whatever is left. I was fortunate, blue Irises, blue Hyacinths, pink Tulips, Tiger Lilies, what a delight, they perfume our whole house! One of the many different compositions and combinations I tried. The name hyacinth comes from the Greek Hyakinthos, a handsome young man who in Greek mythology was loved by the sun god Apollo. One day they were practicing throwing the discus but the jealous god of the West Wind, who was also in love with Hyakinthos, blew the discus back and it fatally wounded him. Nature at its best! A small series of 'mixed'flowers, to colour your day. I don't talk to flowers, they talk to me and I gladly listen! The Anemones hobnobbed with the pink Ranunculus, come on, we go so well together, take our photograph? For years I 'experimented' in the studio, to get that Flemish painter's light? Well, I was born in Flanders, it must be in my blood? LOL. Lead and enjoy a good life, do and say things that enrich... and do not forget to tell the people close to you, how much you love them! SENSUAL...

There are no secrets... it only took me years of experimenting in the studio. First you hit it with everything you've got, like all things in life, hihi, now it is less and less. I use cutters and flags to shield and play with the light. Photography is an Art, a way of life and seeing life, it is my passion, mental and emotional nourishment. All I can say is experiment, experiment, experiment... the exposure is irrelevant because each flower, light source is different. Make it your own! THE KISS... tulip

I'm in a Rodin state of mind? LOL This tulip was blowing me a kiss, aaahhh imagination eh? I love these minimalistic and dramatic compositions, of flowers emerging... down to the bare essence. EN GARDE... TULIP

En garde is a French phrase meaning 'on guard'. Used to warn a fencer to assume the position preparatory to a duel, or to warn an opponent in chess that their queen is threatened. SEASON of YELLOW... ALSTROEMERIA

Yellow is a pre-dominant colour for Easter. Also called the Peruvian Lily or Inca Lily, is a South American genus of about 50 species of flowering plants. Almost all of the species are restricted to one of two distinct centers of diversity, one in central Chile, the other in eastern Brazil. Species of Alstroemeria from the Atacama Desert of Chile are winter-growing plants while those of Brazil are summer-growing. The flower, which resembles a miniature lily, is very popular for bouquets and flower arrangements in the commercial cut flower trade. They have a vase life of about two weeks. Here you don't often 'find' the yellow variety, I whooped when I saw them, lol... ROMANZA of THE YELLOW and WHITE IRIS...

The term Romance (in music), (Spanish: romance/romanza, Italian: romanza, German: Romanze, French: romance, Russian: романс, Portuguese: romance) has a centuries-long history. Applied to narrative ballads in Spain, it came to be used by the 18th century for simple lyrical pieces not only for voice, but also for instruments alone. From then on, ALL the great composers wrote Romances. I don't talk to flowers, they talk to me and I gladly listen! THESE whispered to me to REACH OUT and TOUCH, and that it FEEEEEEEEEEEEELS GOOD!!!! THE SEXUALITY OF FLOWERS, violets...

The reproductive structure of some seed-bearing plants, like the violas (pansies) characteristically having either specialized male or female organs or both male and female organs, such as stamens and a pistil, enclosed in an outer envelope of petals and sepals. The flowers of violets have 5 sepals (Sepals are one of the four basic parts of a flower. They are found below the petals), that are persistent (remaining attached beyond the usual time) after blooming, and in some species the sepals enlarge after blooming. The flowers have five free stamens with short filaments that are oppressed against the ovary, only the lower two stamens have nectary spurs that are inserted on the lowest petal into the spur or a pouch. The flower styles are thickened near the top and the stigmas are head-like, narrowed or often beaked. The flowers have a superior ovary with one cell, which has three placentae, containing many ovules. NOT ALL VIOLETS are BLUE…

Roses are red Violets are???? I refuse to be blue! The viola is a large family containing 500 species, they are on record in Greece from the 4th century B.C. Later in Europe, it was discovered that a plant similar to a viola grew in open areas. The plant found mostly in fields and amongst rocks in the Alps, hence Alpine. It became known as a wild pansy (French:pensÈe). It might have been a romantic Frenchman who 'named' it... A pensÈe can be a thought or a saying, short or it can be as long as a paragraph, a page, a poem! Maybe he thought of his loved-one, dried one amongst some book he carried? Juste une pensÈe... lol. These delicately fragrant flowers come in a wonderful variety of colours. The dark centres in some flowers are thought to resemble little faces. These are a smaller variety (a flower not much bigger than my thumbnail!), that I have in the garden, I could not resist photographing them in the studio... CREATE YOUR DREAMS, Alstroemeria

"We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams." That is the 'original' quote, that goes for the flowers I photographed here, Alstroemeria... sadly, it did not mention who's words they were. It reminds me of ZORBA, By Nikos Kazantzakis, one of my favourite literary works, talk about overlapping expression!!! Because it was so fitting to my own emotions, I made it into this now: "I photograph for laughter, I photograph for tears, I photograph for madness, I photograph for fears, I photograph for hopes, I photograph for screams, I am the photographer, I create the dreams..." THANX for your comments and visits, much appreciated, as always!, M, (*_*) Please do not use this image on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved

LES BELLES BLANCHES... Alstroemeria

Most of you know by now how I love 'playing' with light, a never ending beautiful challenge, food for my creative soul, which I so desperately need at the moment... I love my profession, but contrary to what most 'enthusiasts' think, and wish it was their 'job', pro photographic work is often boring, the clients tell you what they want, if they know what they want, which is not always the case, that, or they DO know and just can't bring it across, there's not much space for personal input (not by lack of trying!!!). This here is my FREEDOM! Each flower or object, most definitely people, seem to have a different 'personality' which I'm trying to capture. Alstroemeria, the genus named after the Swedish baron Alströmer who brought them back from a trip to South America in 1753. Also called the Peruvian Lily or Inca Lily, is a South American genus of about 50 species of flowering plants. The flower, which resembles a miniature lily, is very popular for bouquets and flower arrangements in the commercial cut flower trade. They have a vase life of about two weeks. For years I 'experimented' in the studio, to get that Flemish painter's light? Well, I was born in Flanders, it must be in my blood? LOL. A BUNDLE of JOY and BEAUTY...

LISIANTHUS, the MEANING: This gorgeous flower, native to Mexico, has long held an important role in communicating a deep, heartfelt, romantic desire. The meaning of the lisianthus has changed a bit over the years, so that now it communicates charisma and congeniality. Send a bouquet of lisianthus to someone you admire or adore and let them know how much you appreciate their outgoing personality. Originating in the West Indies, Mexico, and Central and South America, the flower is known botanically as Eustoma grandiflorum. The common name comes from the Greek words lysis, meaning 'dissolution' and anthos, meaning 'flower.' Colours include white, light and dark pink, lavender and deep purple. Double and single-flower varieties exist. Giving my flowers SOUL? AT PICKERING OLD STATION...

Pickering, North-Yorkshire... Most of the passengers may not realise how reliant upon volunteers the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is. With the magnificent steam engines, beautiful rural stations and smartly uniformed staff, a visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is like taking a step back in time. From the smoke and steam pouring from the engines to the cosy wood-panelled carriages and friendly conductor service, the railway is both lovingly preserved and charmingly authentic. It’s also the perfect starting point for a day out, whether you’re travelling between the rugged Yorkshire villages, hiking on the wind swept moors or spending a day by the seaside in Whitby. You know by now that I am a 'purist? Prefer proper pure photography! For years people researched and battled to create the SHARPEST GLASS!!! And now, I see ALL TOO MANY 'BLUR' filters???????? LOL. LATE EVENING... EARLY NIGHT...

One from the 'archives', the days of film! Not often do you have such calm weather and waters along North-Sea Coasts. I don't know about you, but me I can become so engrossed in the image-taking. I forget time and of course, your eyes gradually adapt to the darkness that stealthily creeps up on you... the sun long gone, the merest of afterglows, a beautiful silence descended, the sea released her typical fragrances, accentuated by the cooling of the night, iodine, salt, fish, tar and oil... The mirror of the Hasselblad (camera) making its heavenly unique 'KLAK' as I took this 'last' neg, pushing it! One of the old favourite 'hunting-grounds' was the main industrial harbour of Ostend, in Flanders, Belgium. Once a thriving fishing harbour, it is now a ‘skeleton’ of what it once was… This was an image I'd had on my 'list' for quite some time and it all fell into place, AND... I'D BROUGHT MY TRIPOD!!! Huraaaayyyy! Well what do you expect with a Hasselblad, hmmm, just look at that quality, no wonder I still have clients who INSIST! Lens 80mm/Zeiss. Film Fuji Tripod(for once that I used it) Manfrotto. Thanks, M, (*_~) MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! CYCLOUHETTE...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! Scheveningen (there's a challenge for you) is not just a posh and popular beach-resort in Holland, it is also a harbour, for both fishing and industrial, which I always found much more interesting. To protect the lowlands from the sea, many wavebreakers, made of huge boulders, and dikes divide up the different port-entrances. Clambering over the rocks, looking for shots, I looked across, there had been a stream of people and cyclists. To my delight this is what I saw, still can't believe it. Just ONE shot, no PS, this is how it came out of the camera on neg. SPECTACULAR...

Another night another image... From the series 'Celestial delights'. The story behind this image still makes me smile: The seaside view from the terrace of the 10th floor penthouse where we used to live. We’d had a very busy day in the studio and after a quick light meal, just sat there unwinding with a nice glass of cool Chardonnay, enjoying the fresh sea air, the nightlight, the sound of the water, when SUDDENLY, a first distant rumble and a flash of lightning. We bumped each other as we both rushed inside for camera and tripod. Set it all up, went back to our chairs and wine, and waited. I saw it moving across the sea, opened my lens and let the camera record this fabulous lightshow of Nature. With the cable release in one hand, wine in the other, yep, that’s the life, he? Mind you, this was a one off, there was no rain and no danger, just this awesome spectacle. Wonderful, great memories. (*_*) PS:it must have been F11 and open for between 1 to 3 min. It's done by 'feeling', if you get a lot of flashes in the first few seconds, then, you've got your shot, otherwise, you wait and have sip of wine... This here is NOT an 'exact' science, the success depends entirely on the elements! This was the best out of three. TIMELESS BEAUTY...

From the series 'Celestial delights'. A SUNSET. (excerpt from a poem by Victor Hugo) ...All vanishes! The Sun, from topmost heaven precipitated, Like a globe of iron which is tossed back fiery red Into the furnace stirred to fume, Shocking the cloudy surges, plashed from its impetuous ire, Even to the zenith spattered in a flecking scud of fire The vaporous and inflamed spume... I do not understand those that tire of such ever-changing beauty, blasé about it? So many greats, in all fields have been inspired by this! AS a photographer, it is not so easy to capture it well! For me, no matter how many sunsets... each one different and fresh and rich and more spectacular than the previous one, a miracle to my eyes each time. Dusk is probably my favourite time, to reflect back on the day and look forward to the evening , the next day, the next sunset...and such, life passes... Nature at its best. This is again taken from the terrace of the penthouse we used to live in, one side overlooking the sea, the other side the town. Even after a full day’s work I would very much relax with a glass of Chardonnay and my camera, looking at the sea-traffic and ultimately the sunset. This is one of them. Different? I'll let you be the judge of that. NO FILTERS USED OR PP, A ONE IN A MILLION NEG... I prefer taking 'uplifting' images...life is tough enough, there is more than plenty of 'darkness' and 'Angst'... I am not 'hiding' from reality, only refuse to only live with 'that', I want to show there IS still 'ANOTHER', beautiful, side to it... for those who care to look? THE MERCATOR... A TALL SHIP... A SPECIAL MOMENT in the LIFE of a PHOTOGRAPHER!

Late afternoon, I sit on the other side of the harbour, on the rocks at the right pier, the other side of town, in the shadow of the lighthouse and some war-leftovers (bunkers hidden and overgrown by dune grasses). Nobody there, camera on tripod, fixed and focused on the point where the Mercator will suddenly appear, ready to sail stately down the entrance of the harbour, between the two piers, cheered on. After some impatient delay, she appears at the mouth of the dock, guided by towboats, frantic activity on deck and up the masts; she's being positioned for the glorious departure... I get my shots, but, she's now moving, gaining momentum, so am I. I run alongside, wiping my teary eyes with my sleeve... from emotion or the wind? I don't know... don't care, stopping repeatedly and briefly to take another shot, but my goal is the end of the pier. I hear the creaking and shaking ship, she's alive again, this is what she's meant for, yes, she's in her element... She dips her bow and stern alternately the closer she gets to the pier-heads, like a dolphin finding a rhythm. At last, she's at sea, late, the sun is going, the mist and night coming. I photograph her for as long as I can. This is my last shot: 'The Mercator'. For the whole story, here: magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2007/07/moment-and-why.html NO DIGITAL MANIPULATION!!! THE MERCATOR, AT SEA, AT LAST...

This tall ship was designed by the Antarctic explorer Adrien de Gerlache (1866-1934) as a training ship for the Belgian merchant fleet. She was built in Scotland and launched in 1932. Technical data: • length : 78.4 m • beam : 11.09 m • draught : 4.5 m • foremast : 39 m (square-rigged) • mainmast : 41 m (fore-and-aft-rigged) • mizzenmast : 40 m (fore-and-aft-rigged) • 15 sails (4 jibs, 4 foresails, 3 staysails, 2 spankers and 2 gaff topsails) • Speed : 13 knots (24 km/h) • Crew : 150 ... At last, she's at sea, late, the sun is going, the mist and night coming... many boats waiting to accompany and escort the start of her voyage... The crew still busy in the masts with the sails... I wait... I photograph her for as long as I can... By the time she's full sail... it is too dark... PRIME VIEW...

RUNSWICK BAY. We drove through the Cleveland Hills, North-Yorkshire, the weather getting more and more ominous as we got closer to the Heritage Coast, flat light, no detail in the sky, ah well it was going to be 'an outing' of discovery and mental photography... That's how we came to this beautiful little village, the road ends just before this, I was so enthralled by what I saw, grabbed my stuff, jumped out of the car, ran towards the sea, this was my first shot. ON A STORMY SUNDAY...A CHRISTMAS THEME.

For December I am uploading images to do with the festive season. This is many different things, as you can see. Again between Christmas and the New Year On a stormy Sunday, while visiting one of my sons, and his little family, who lives in Holland, the beach called... After a copious meal, what better than to go out for a brisk walk, warm clothes, good boots, to fight the wind and brace the elements. I’m one of those people who just loves the beach and the sea in Wintertime! Then come home all aglow and rejuvenated, to a nice cup of hot chocolate... It also gives for many a great image and often strange colour skies. I wasn’t the only one that day near Scheveningen or Katwijk (sorry, can't remember now), but I sure enjoyed it. Hope you do too. This is the way the image came out, no manipulation. I wish a wonderful day and thanx for viewing and your time, Magda (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) I CRIED FOR YOU

I Cried For You Katie Melua You're beautiful so silently It lies beneath a shade of blue It struck me so violently When I looked at you But others pass, they never pause To feel that magic in your hand To me you're like a wild rose They never understand why I cried for you When the sky cried for you And when you went I became a hopeless drifter But this life was not for you Though I learned from you That beauty need only be a whisper I'll cross the sea for a different world With your treasure, a secret for me to hold In many years they may forget This love of ours or that we met They may not know How much you meant to me I cried for you And the sky cried for you And when you went I became a hopeless drifter But this life was not for you Though I learned from you That beauty need only be a whisper Without you now I see How fragile the world can be And I know you've gone away But in my heart you'll always stay I cried for you When the sky cried for you And when you went I became a hopeless drifter But this life was not for you Though I learned from you That beauty need only be a whisper That beauty need only be a whisper It is never easy to be back after a fantastic time we had in my native country. The feelings and emotions are very mixed, glad to be home but missing so my dear family, friends old and new. OOOH how I can miss my beloved Flanders! That day we meandered through it, arrived in the area of Damme, Oostkerke, with its endless tree-lined canals, when finally the weather broke, the long promised rain started to fall, the sky cried, gently at first then it poured, (testing if what the claimed was true? D200being watersealed, tee hee). I just HAD to take a shot of this unique landscape. What you see is three rows of trees on the left, the verge which is the dyke of the canal, on the other side, two more rows; this is in West-Flanders, past Damme near Brugge. Instead of getting better, the weather got steadily worse, I could not risk my equipment out of the car anymore, but we were there NOW!!! So, Paul and I tried to coordinate the window wipers with me shooting… we started to giggle at the situation, which made it a fun experience, but not easier! There were some raindrops (my camera kept focusing on them!) on the windscreen, but I rather like that, it was very much the atmosphere, also what I saw then and what I feel now, I miss it… Toned Indigo for mood... I AM FEATURED HERE NOW, NEW: www.paranoias.org/2012/01/flower-photography-by-magda-indigo I wish you all the very best, may your wishes come true, and thanx for all your kind words, time, comments and faves, Very much appreciated. The canals of Flanders around Damme...

A few miles from Brugge, you have the small town of Damme. In the Middle-Ages, this used to be the harbour of Brugge, one of the wealthiest cities in the North. Due to silt the North Sea is now about 25 miles out, but Damme retained it's reputation for good food and beer, wonderful old buildings full of the history of revolutionary Flanders. Centuries later Napoleon saw the importance of the area and ordered a system of canals to be built. Today, whichever road you come from, if you want to get to Damme, you'll drive along those beautiful treelined canals. I walked across one of the bridges, a major junction, in Oostkerke, of those magnificent, unique tree lined canals. Behind me were syphons and sluices. A UNIQUE landscape that just goes on and on and on... A photographer's paradise! I AM FEATURED HERE NOW, NEW: www.paranoias.org/2012/01/flower-photography-by-magda-indigo I wish you all the very best, may your wishes come true, and thanx for all your kind words, time, comments and faves, Very much appreciated. LE PLAT PAYS, qui est le mien...

Flanders. With a sky so low that a canal is lost With a sky so low that it makes humility With a sky so grey that a canal was hung With a sky so grey that you have to pardon it With the North Wind, which tears itself apart With the North Wind, listen to how it creaks... This flat land that is mine (Excerpt from the song and poem, written by Jacques Brel) Jacques Brel LE PLAT PAYS 1962 Avec la mer du Nord pour dernier terrain vague Et des vagues de dunes pour arrêter les vagues Et de vagues rochers que les marées dépassent Et qui ont à jamais le coeur à marée basse Avec infiniment de brumes à venir Avec le vent de l'est écoutez-le tenir Le plat pays qui est le mien Avec des cathédrales pour uniques montagnes Et de noirs clochers comme mâts de cocagne Où des diables en pierre décrochent les nuages Avec le fil des jours pour unique voyage Et des chemins de pluies pour unique bonsoir Avec le vent d'ouest écoutez-le vouloir Le plat pays qui est le mien Avec un ciel si bas qu'un canal s'est perdu Avec un ciel si bas qu'il fait l'humilité Avec un ciel si gris qu'un canal s'est pendu Avec un ciel si gris qu'il faut lui pardonner Avec le vent du nord qui vient s'écarteler Avec le vent du nord écoutez-le craquer Le plat pays qui est le mien Avec de l'Italie qui descendrait l'Escaut Avec Frida la blonde quand elle devient Margot Quand les fils de novembre nous reviennent en mai Quand la plaine est fumante et tremble sous juillet Quand le vent est au rire quand le vent est au blé Quand le vent est au sud écoutez-le chanter Le plat pays qui est le mien. This image depicts the essence of my motherland. Flanders’ natural beauty is best found in the polders of the Flemish lowlands. An atmosphere of peace and tranquillity pervades. The River is de IJzer (l'Isere), starts in The North of France and throws itself into the North Sea in Newport on the Belgian coast. THE SKEW BARN...

On my way to the Yorkshire Moors, the weather changed again, he sky was ominous and the light dramatic ... then I saw this!!! A skew old barn in the spotlight, luckily, I could stop and park, my camera at hand, as usual, what a beauty! AUTUMN in LLANRWST... WALES

Llanrwst, Gwynedd, North-Wales, United Kingdom. The name is a real tongue-twister, eh, for non-Welsh speakers? Apparently a welsh Icon... This cottage, next to the bridge, draped in a throw of Autumn colours. We discovered it by chance on the road from the Coast of North Wales UK, where we were staying, to Betws-y Coed, Snowdonia and Mount Snowdon. A CHOCOLATE BOX PICTURE? FLANDERS, A winter-sunset

waited a long time for the right moment, was on my way home when I saw this in the side mirror. I left my car on the side of the narrow road, grabbed my camera. Nikon F4 and 400asa film, scanned from neg and comp in camera! This is so very typical, the gnarled willows to keep the flat land 'dry', the sky reaching poplars, the majestic elm trees standing tall against the North wind. In winter the sun just drops,he? MY ETERNAL FLANDERS...

The festive days are upon us, I think of friends and family... on the Continent, mostly in Flanders... The bells have rung, the echoes sound The day is gone Ay, Marieke, Marieke In Flanders field the echoes sound The day is gone (excerpt fom 'Ay Marieke' by Jacques Brel) This flat, windswept land, so fertile, so mutilated in the past. The stretch behind the dunes is still, like in the Middle Ages dotted with those 'round' villages. Church and graveyard in the center, houses around in a circle, the road, often still cobblestones, meandering through it. Flanders... where I was born... It was a soft windstill evening, a beautiful silence caressed my ears, the layered fog effacing whole sections of the land from my eyes, trailing capriciously in the sigh of the sunset... I left the bottom in because that's how it was, grey and darker and lighter again. I wish you a day full of beauty and thank you for your visit, Magda, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) ALWAYS DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS...ANOTHER WINTER'S DALE

For December I am uploading images to do with the festive season. This is going to be many different things The typical Yorkshire Dales' view, old trees, a golden barn, the ever ongoing dry-stone walls drawing dark dividing lines through the land. The light was golden, the air crisp and clear, I love Winter. It reminds me of the paintings of one of the Breughels. Since it was taken with 400 asa film, I reduced the grain for once, however the main reason was to get that 'paint' effect that the famous Flemish painter's family BREUGHEL and others put in their paintings. This was how I saw it, long shadows, gold and mystery in the trees, the cold wind gently blurring my tear-filled eyes. This image is an artistic interpretation. LAST SUN OVER THE YORKSHIRE DALES...

Very fortunate to live within close vicinity of such beauty. The Wharfe is a river that carves out the Wharfedale. So I was standing on the South side of the Dale, the sun behind me shining on the oppositer side. The light was superb, the air crisp and cool I love the lose or Dry stone walls, so typical in the North-Yorkshire Dales. Dry stone walls are commonly used as field boundaries in the highlands, such as the Yorkshire Dales. In the lowland regions of England hedges are the most common traditional boundary. The roots of drystone walling as a method of enclosing fields lie at least as far back as the Iron Age.They are called 'dry' because no cement is used in them. Stones used are made of either Sandstone , Gritstone or Limestone. Often windy on the heights, so no blowing over, the wind whistles through them! The very strong stone walls are often two hundred years old, some older. Most stone walls were built between 1750 and 1850. They not only prevent stock from getting in or out of a field but also provide shelter. Dry stone walls do not require the maintenance of a hedge or fence, and take no nutrients from the soil. They are a feature in every season, yet Winter is even more special. I love chaud/froid in these... SNOW BLIZZARD

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! Our dog, a Border Collie, didn't want to go out in this weather. Could you blame him? But I was determined to make a beautiful shot that day. I even risked my precious camera... The result was well worth it, I love the windswept movement of the snow. I wish you the best of days and thank you for your time. MOON OVER THE YORKSHIRE MOORS...

The moon was out, darkness fell, the silence deafening... Above Otley, a small beautiful Market town in Wharfedale, the ridges of the hills on both sides are great places for spectacular views and skies. Of course, the higher you go in this landscape the bleaker it gets, that is where you will find the heather and bracken (a widespread, weedy fern) on the Moors, no other vegetation. If you like solitude and 'a feeling of space', that's where you'll find it. This winding road, I was on, ends at a place called the Blubberhouses, just a few old houses. Such lovely names and I'm sure all with a history! Thanks for viewing, M, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) MULTICOLORI… Veronica

Veronica longifolia Long-leaved Speedwell This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and birds Slender, upright spires of white, pink and blue tubular flowers appear in summer above cream-edged, mid-green leaves. This elegant speedwell shows a good resistance to mildew and will add vertical interest throughout a sunny border on well-drained soil. If cut back after the flowers have faded, it may produce a second flush in late summer or early autumn. A ROSE of BEAUTY IS A JOY FOREVER...

One of the last roses this year in the garden, it was rained on (hence the waterdrops), and the wind was blowing this beauty mercilessly about, I took pity on it, and brought it in. "Just Joey" is a Hybrid Tea Rose and has a fruity frangrance ( to me it smells like ripe raspberries mmmmmm) which wafts from large ruffled salmon blooms, once opened. This superstar rose is from England. Just Joey roses were inducted into the Hall of Fame by the World Federation of Rose Societies in 1994. The flowers are well-formed with large, high-centred buds, supported by long, straight and upright stems. Each blousy flower can grow to 8-12.5 cm wide. Hybrid Teas are the world's most popular type of rose by choice due to their color and flower form. With their long stems, it gives them the advantage, over others, as cut flowers. Most shrubs tend to be very upright, reaching up to 1.8 metres and are recurrent-flowering (flowering constantly during the season, unlike wild dog roses that flower once). Each time I think... that's it, there's only so much you can do with flowers... and yet again and again, I'll see something new. Being creative is not a choice... it is an urge in me. The laughter-lines a bit deeper, a few more scars, a bit more weather-beaten maybe... the beauty still very much there... love... more than ever... still feeling the thrill of the tender touch... Imperfection to me means more interesting, less bland? These are two roses from our own garden (rescued... again...) last Summer. They are 'old fashioned', very fragrant, so blousy, frilly (frivolous?) and called 'JUST JOEY'. ONE DAY I'LL FLY AWAY...

I see so many dark and negative shots being uploaded, highly manipulated, filled with fear and Angst, so my aim is to bring the joy and colour of the reality that surrounds us, some optimism, beauty and a smile, with my images... A LOVE THEME...

For December I'm uploading images to do with the festive season. This is many different things...as you can see... Love is what we are all after and the spice of life! The red rose whispers of passion, And the white rose breathes of love; O, the red rose is a falcon, And the white rose is a dove. - John Boyle O’Reilly Paul bought me those two beauties, long-stemmed roses... Most of you know by now how I love 'playing' with light, a never ending beautiful challenge, food for my creative soul, lol... Flowers are a great 'subject' because of their diversity. Contrary to what many think: I AM NOT A FLOWER PHOTOGRAPHER! Just A photographer. I love my job, but contrary to what most 'enthusiasts' think, and wish it was their 'job', pro photographic work is often boring, the clients tell you what they want, if they know what they want, which is not always the case, that, or they DO know and just can't bring it across, there's not much space for personal input (not by lack of trying!!!). This here is my FREEDOM! Each flower seems to have a different 'personality' which I'm trying to capture. An image from this series became a Book Cover in Italy for Romeo e Giulietta by Shakespeare. THE STORY of A ROSE IN JANUARI...

This is a rose I cut from our garden, on the FIRST day of the Year!!! I had not had the time to prune the roses, that, or when I did, the weather was too dreadful to go out! I decided to leave it for early Spring. Woke up, that first fresh morning, looking forward to a nice long breakfast, opened the curtains, yuk.. four small buds on the rosebush were again being thrashed about in bursts of wind. The breakfast became shorter than intended... I got dressed and ready, went out armed with my secateurs, brought them in, I saw the leaves were quite damaged. For the first 2 days nothing happened, despite my encouragment (LOL)... on the third day, YESSS, they were opening... To my amazement, I always thought they were pure white... but no, they had pink edges! A true WINTER-ROSE! Giving my flowers SOUL? NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN...

This detail of a White rose reminded me of folds, soft waves... white satin sheets.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lazdg-eqmQ&feature=related At the end, the poem "Late Lament." It was written by Graeme Edge. Breathe deep the gathering gloom, Watch lights fade from every room. Bedsitter people look back and lament, Another day's useless energy spent. Impassioned lovers wrestle as one, Lonely man cries for love and has none. New mother picks up and suckles her son, Senior citizens wish they were young. Cold hearted orb that rules the night, Removes the colours from our sight. Red is grey and yellow white, But we decide which is right. And which is an illusion??? 4.000.000 REASONS TO BE THRILLED!

I just got 4 MILLION views! I am amazed, surprised, humbled and overjoyed! Hope you all enjoyed viewing it as much as I did taking the images. Yes I am a big fan of white lilies... Lilium longiflorum. This plant is native to Japan and the Ryūkyū Islands. It is a stem rooting lily, growing up to 1 m high and bears a number of trumpet shaped, white, very fragrant, and outward facing flowers. We have a family of friends that we visit every year, they breed horses, wonderful people. They have now made it a tradition that each year, on the day of our return back home, the end of our visit/holidays, they present me with a bunch of freshly-cut Lilies (one of the sons helps on a farm where they grow them for the bulbs!). It is a bouquet that I can barely hold my arms around, I had to buy a BIG vase and even now, they are split. Our house is filled whit the fragrance. Although I do have a lot of work, I just HAD to take time out to eternalize them... What wonderful friends we have all over! I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. PINK for OCTOBER...

PINK GIANT ASTERS. It is once again October... Breast Cancer Awareness month... sadly it strikes all the year round, indiscriminate? Two years ago at this time, I had 2 friends and the husband of a friend, on different Continents going through gruelling Chemotherapy... I tried to give them as much POSITIVITY and support as I could. One, younger than 50... did not make the end of that year, the second... will not make the end of the next year. The other person is doing alright! I lost my sister a few years ago to virulent breats-cancer and my best friend who was like a brother to me… I don't think there is anybody who hasn't been 'touched' by the awful disease; it is the lottery of horror. FULL of ADMIRATION for THE PEONY...

The title? They are so FULL (blousy) and I admire them, right now? My favourite... LOL. The peony is the only genus in the flowering plant family Paeoniaceae. They are native to Asia, Southern Europe and western North America but grow very well here too, Peonies are actually very easy to grow; once established they can tolerate drought and suffer from very few diseases. Colours range from pure white through baby pinks and palest peaches to clear deep pink and darkest rich maroon. There is also a pale yellow but it is rare. Peonies are only available between late May and early July, so get them while you can! They are very thirsty flowers, so make sure you top up the vase or bowl. The Greeks believed they could cure over 20 ailments and were found in every monastery garden. Peonies have been cultivated for over 2,000 years, more for their medicinal qualities than for ornament. The Japanese protect the earliest peony blooms from the snow by protecting them with individual small thatched shelters. Some geishas used to wear special peony colours. The Chinese name for peony is "sho yu" which means "most beautiful" and they idolised this flower. The common thread is that the flower always denotes luxury and indulgence. I again tried to photograph them in a 'Victorian' style. Lots of drama! Giving my flowers SOUL? A SINGLE SOUL????

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! "Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies." by Aristotle I was put in 'THE SPOTLIGHT', a new feature here on 500 px, check it out: portfolios.500px.com/spotlights/magdaindigo# I don't talk to flowers, they talk to me and I gladly listen! Shimmering in silky tones, trembling with beauty and individuality... joined in passion like grown from one stem, they belong together. I discovered these, a salmon pink I had NEVER seen before! The petals look 'waxy' but feel silky soft! The peony was originally introduced as medicine. In fact, its ancient Japanese name "Ebisugusuri" literally means ‘medicine from China’. However, due to its beautiful and now mostly double blooms, in time, many decorative varieties were developed. In Japanese society, it was seen both as a medicine and a source of beauty. LYSIANTHUS in CHIAROSCURO...

I AM FEATURED HERE NOW, NEW: www.paranoias.org/2012/01/flower-photography-by-magda-indigo I love CHIAROSCURO and in this image, the way the buds seem to reach out... This beauty became this... :Midsummer Night's Dream book cover Originating in the West Indies, Mexico, and Central and South America, the flower is known botanically as Eustoma grandiflorum. The common name comes from the Greek words lysis, meaning 'dissolution' and anthos, meaning 'flower' Lisianthus is also known as eustoma. Colours include white, light and dark pink, lavender and deep purple. Double and single-flower varieties exist. Many people do not know what it is, but everyone loves it! For years I 'experimented' in the studio, to get that Flemish painter's light? Well, I was born in Flanders, it must be in my blood? LOL. Giving my flowers SOUL? BIRD of PARADISE...

Portrait of the Strelitzia reginae also called Bird of Paradise. Ooh, and I can see why! A stunningly beautiful flower, exotic, well to us, not in the countries where they grow naturally. I always say it, one man's exotic is another man's 'daily'... lol I again tried to photograph them in the 'style that I love so much, a bit mysterious, playing with the light and dof. Lilac, MANY SMALL ONES...

In Flanders there is a saying, many small ones make a large one (meaning, for example, if you count all the 'small sales' you make it might turn out a tidy sum?)... all the little flowers make these beautiful blooms! Syringa (Lilac) is a genus of about 20–25 species of flowering plants in the olive family (Oleaceae), is native to Europe and Asia. I love the deep purple ones like in this image. The usual flower colour is a shade of purple (often a light purple or lilac), but white and pale pink are also found. The flowers are produced in spring, each flower being 5 to 10 millimetresin diameter with a four-lobed corolla, the corolla tube narrow, 5 to 20 millimetres long; they are bisexual, with fertile stamens and stigma in each flower. The flowers grow in large panicles, and in several species have a strong fragrance. A true blue or purple is not so common in the flower world and not easy to photograph well... ENJOY THIS LARGE and View On Black Giving my flowers SOUL? Voulez vous danser grand mère ?

This brought back very personal memories from way back. My paternal grand-parents, she was always singing, he was an artist and the kindest, gentlest man, I remember him with great fondness, and I am so very pleased that my youngest son not only looks like him (in a taller way, lol) but has inherited that goodness, both noble souls! This waltz was a BIG favourite, he'd take her by the hand and invite her... it is also the first dance my sweet 'Bonpapa' taught me... 1-2-3, 1-2-3... Some of my earliest souvenirs, I even remember the dress, the smell of lavender and wood-wax, linseed oil, aaahhh, to be back there for 5 minutes... I don't talk to flowers, they talk to me and I gladly listen! Two star tulips: INVITATION A LA DANCE... Another fresh year, fresh ideas, fresh flowers... Giving my flowers SOUL? LIVING ART NOUVEAU, the yellow tulips

Art Nouveau is a decorative style in the visual arts, interior design, and architecture that flourished from 1890 to 1910. It is characterized by organic, sinuous patterns and ornamentations based usually on twisting plant forms. Here I 'shaped' them in a circle... It is not only the shapes of the flowers that are inspiring, one can be creative with different shapes you design them in and they take on a whole new meaning? A circle is a simple shape of Euclidean geometry consisting of those points in a plane which are equidistant from a given point called the center. A circle as a metaphor and structure for defining a system of communication and interaction... Inner-circles, outer-circles... It seems to me that everything comes in 'circles'... It was Spring once more... Just a meditative day! LOVE KNOT... Tulips

For the romantic season Where there is love there is life - Mahatma Gandhi A stylized knot regarded as a symbol of the constancy of two lovers. Also called lovers' knot, true lovers' knot. Modern western knotting literature has the name for these related knots deriving from stories or legends in which the knots symbolize the connection between a couple in love. Many examples feature sailors separated from their beloved. Ashley notes that it was once common for sailors' wedding rings, where gold wire was wrought to incorporate the "true lovers" knot such that resultant ring would comprise two tori: each flexible to move about the other; yet nevertheless inseparable! ABOUT COTTON...

We all know cotton, but what do we actually KNOW about cotton? What an influence it's had on our world in many different ways? www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSJZ12iMzvQ&feature=related It is not something you see here often in the UK, but I had the oportunity and took advantage of it.PLEASE, take the time to View LARGE and On Black, well worth it! I could NOT imagine my life without it, together with silk and wool, my absolute favorite materials. I do not like synthetics and avoid them as much as possible, not a fanatic in anything, I do enjoy Fleece (made from recycled bottles?). Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or protective capsule, around the seeds of cotton plants of the genus Gossypium. The plant is a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including the Americas, Africa, India, and Pakistan. The fiber most often is spun into yarn or thread and used to make a soft, breathable textile, which is the most widely used natural-fiber cloth in clothing today. THE WHISPER...

"Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies." Aristotle Valentine's day is getting closer... I know it is mostly about commerce and some are a bit blasé about it, but it is a nice thought, although one day in the year is not enough, in my book, to pay 'special' attention to your partner. Love is a beautiful thing... This portrait was made in the studio, commissioned by the couple. I did colour, Paul shot the b&w. We tried to capture some of the intimacy that exists between a couple in love. Came across that one and played a bit with it in PS, didn't need much, I've always liked it. I know I keep saying that this here is my 'freedom' ... In this one it really became all about THE WHISPER... maybe the promise... TRIPLE TOUR en l'AIR...

From the series: People@work Now, THIS is a REAL strobe image. The lighting technique I was using was in complete darkness, euuuhhh, which was a bit of a problem for him, however after a couple of tries, he succeeded. This is the result: NO DIGITAL MANIPULATION. ONE SINGLE EXPOSURE, ONE NEG. Most of the ballet terms are in French. I always thought this was a pirouette... I asked him to make a beautiful movement, fascinated as I am by trying to capture the emotion of motion in camera. What I didn't know is that dancers need a point to fix on at each turn, to remain and land on the same spot. A very strong, lean and dynamic man, a joy to watch the human body at work. Christian Dedeene was a solo dancer for 5 years with Maurice Béjart. Turn in the air. This is essentially a male dancer's step. lt is a turn in the air in which the dancer rises straight into the air from a demi-plié, makes a complete turn and lands in the fifth position with the feet reversed. The turn may be single, double or triple according to the ability of the dancer. The arms assist and the head must spot as in pirouettes. Tour en l'air may also be finished in various poses such as attitude, arabesque, grande seconde or on one knee. It may also be done in a series THIS IS A TRIBUTE TO Maurice Béjart, founder of the 'Ballet du XXe Siècle', a superb choreographer (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/11/23/db2301.xml) Thank you, M, (*_*) MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! THE FLIP...

MY BIT OF FUN FOR TODAY... These two are supertoned performers as well as two extremely kind people. He was for 5 years a solo and star dancer with one of the greatest choreographers of the century, Maurice Bejart. This is a figure straight from that school. This is a typical Maurice Bejart movement. Strong and bold, tough on the dancers. Beautiful to watch. I was fortunate to have him in our studio a couple of times, and what an experience it was, each time. I salute them. I felt like some 'fun' today... I've been DISLIKED so many times today AGAIN... it is FUNNY! LOL. THE DREAM DANCER

ANOTHER PROPER STROBE PHOTO! Christian Dedeene, he was for 5 years a solo and star dancer with one of the greatest choreographers of the century 20th , Maurice Bejart. I was fortunate to have him in our studio a couple of times, and what an experience it was, each time. Thanks Christian, for being so patient and sharing my artistic vision. This is the result of having a professional ballet dancer in the studio, up for a challenge and something different. How do you capture the graceful, often powerful movement and action with such a static medium? And challenging it was, as ballet dancers need to be able to fix on a point to execute the figures correctly and land on the same spot. This image is taken in a completely dark studio. Technically challenging though it is, the results always thrill me. We had tremendous fun and are happy with the results. This has been achieved by strobe flashing. NO DIGITAL MANIPULATION. ONE SINGLE EXPOSURE, ONE NEG. Modern photographic stroboscopy in its simplest form is a method whereby a subject in motion is lit by repeating flashes of light while the shutter of the camera remains open for a period of time long enough to capture the subject in multiple locations during the time of exposure... Not as many now seem to think, just using FLASH! Thanx for visiting, Magda, (*_*) IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) SWEETHEART...

For December I am still uploading images to do with the festive season. This is going to be many different things, as you can see... STRIPED CANDY CANES. In its early form, the candy cane began as a simple white stick of sugar for children to eat - there was no "cane" shape or stripes to speak of. While it is uncertain where the first canes originated, it is clear that by the mid-17th century, if not earlier, its use had already become widespread across Europe. The distinctive "hook" shape associated with candy canes is traditionally credited to a choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral in Germany, who, legend has it, in 1670 bent straight candy sticks into canes to represent a shepherd's crook, and gave them to children at church services. It is also possible that, as people decorated their Yule trees with food, the bent candy cane was invented as a functional solution. ART in PHOTOGRAPHY...

The big A... art? I consider myself a creative photographer, not an art photographer. It is such a massive discussion what art is... been there, worn that T-shirt, lol. Until the day there is a definite and 'plausible' definition of ART, that's when I'll change my mind, in the mean-time, I'll stick to creative... When not 'dictated' by a client, I take images that come out of my brain, the birth of the idea, the development of it, my vision and the creation, my enjoyment and the challenge, the hype and the anticipation, the playing with light, to me, the ultimate high, I don't need anything else. Once the image is there, I'm content, and if it 'inspires' others, releases an emotion, that's wonderful! MORE ON THE SUBJECT HERE: magdaindigo.blogspot.co.uk/2010/04/why-knot-to-art-or-not...
