GENETICS... MOTHER and SON.

#abfav_2_together_theme I got this lovely family with 3 children in the studio. Whilst the two youngest looked very much like their dad, her eldest son was just the spitting image of his mum. AAAhhh, the Art of genetics. I placed their hands like that in this portrait because often I find they play such a vital role and say so much. FOR MORE ON THIS and other anecdotes.. magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2009/01/importance-of-hands-in-p... Taken on the Hasselblad, which has square negs, so it is slightly cropped. Scanned from the print. The 80mm Zeiss lens and the film Ilford Delta 100. MY VALENTINE'S PRESENT...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ My youngest son, he was born on the 14th of February. He hates to be photographed. Got him in for some proper portraits. After the session he relaxed, we laughed and joked, the conversation turned to romanticism and falling in love, he showed us his boxer shorts to 'prove' he was a TRUE Valentine. I caught the moment, knowing how shy he is. A HAPPY BIRTHDAY Son. Again,I will not see him either today... Difficult! Love is quite an abstract concept, much easier to experience than to explain. You can compare love to the truth, for you must love to find the truth, but most will find love on more instinct levels. About the photo, well you know by now that I like a bit different, ‘beyond the obvious’, so here’s another approach to the theme Valentine! I had one shot left on my my film, too many times this happened to me... Developed and printed in the wet darkroom, I hand-coloured the hearts in on this black and white photo. Nothing digital about this! Happy Valentine’s day. Have a romantic day and thanx for your visit, Magda, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY MY IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.com IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) PAPA IS THE BEST...

FOR THE DADDIES. He came into the studio after we finished a shoot, so everything still in place, tjaaahhh, who could resist putting them in front of the camera? Ever the joker, he had bought his daughter a dummy that said 'Papa is the best'... Just look at her expression, is she in doubt? She clearly senses something's not right. Puzzlement. Thank you for all the comments. It is not evident to produce a great 'STRAIGHT' portrait, without any manipulation, this was scanned from neg! ABOUT PHOTOGENIC...

#abfav_2_together_theme THE TWO MODELS. I’ve long wondered about that phenomenon, why are certain objects and certainly people so much more photogenic than others. They look good to me, but take a photograph and… well, let’s say, what I expected is just not there! So a person described as being photogenic may not necessarily look as attractive in real life and a person who appears attractive in real life may look less attractive in photograph. This phenomenon is caused by the three dimensional and two dimensional polarising effect and could explain why a person looks "better" in 2D than in 3D or vice versa. Therefore, a person described as photogenic means he or she looks better in 2D than 3D.(says wikipedia) Well, these two models have both the 2D and 3D factor then, because they look good both ways, lucky sods… hihi, hey wait has it got NOTHING to do with the photographer and her skills? AAWWW… LOL. I was after VERY high contrast ON FILM, ILFORD PAN F 50, virtually no grain and a special lighting in the studio. Have a day full of laughter, it’s good for you, and thanks for your time, Magda, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.com Please do not use this image on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved

MODEL 2

ABOUT THE PORTRAIT in PHOTOGRAPHY... Model, Michaele, very French-Italian, sensitive and kind man, extremely professional and a pleasure to work with. What I was after in this series was VERY high contrast ON FILM, Nikon F4, ILFORD PAN F 50, virtually no grain and a special lighting in the studio. Photography is a powerful medium. Too often underestimated and often neglected form of art in photography is that of portrait photography, yet it is the perfect recording of our history, forever changing lifestyles, the all important memories... Cameras only the tools of the trade, note I write 'cameras', no distinction, it is my firm conviction that it is the person using the tools that is responsible for the result. I believe we have become too obsessed with the 'technicality' of the manipulation rather than with the content of the pictures. Personally, if a photograph touches me, that is the first criterion! Unfortunately I must admit, if it has been 'massacred' with some software, that rapidly takes away ALL emotions except, GGGGRRRRRR, hihi, Anybody (hate the question) who asks me: 'and, what do you photograph?' makes me think, my answer would be the BEAUTY in everything? However I must admit, portraiture may be the most difficult discipline, I find it also the most rewarding! Have a wonderful day and thank you very much for your comments, always appreciated, M, (*_*) IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) DEFINITION...

CHRISTIAN DEDEENE... THE BALLET DANCER... Still one of my favourite portraits. He was for 5 years a solo and star dancer with one of the greatest choreographers of the century, Maurice Béjart . I was fortunate to have him in our studio a couple of times, and what an experience it was, each time. After I'd seen him in action and done the 'dance photos', I asked him if he would pose for this portrait I had in my head. I know how these people work out day after day, I admired the definition in the muscle tones and tendons. The result is what I had imagined, the proud profile, the wild hair, and THE DEFINITION. I love dramatic lighting, especially for this kind of subject. Thanks Christian, for being so patient and sharing my artistic vision. magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2008/01/all-shades-of-grey.html Thank you, M, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.com IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) LE CYGNE...

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ www.youtube.com/watch?v=b44-5M4e9nI Le Cygne, or The Swan, is the thirteenth movement of The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-SaÎns. Le cygne is often refered to as The Dying Swan, made famous and 'interpreted' like this by Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. This piece features a solo cello (my favourite instrument) in tenor key (clef) and two pianos. I passionately hate the idea of being with it, I think an artist has always to be out of step with his time. - Orson WellesSo, I'm always on the quest for new things... had this idea of 'merging' two images (both taken on Hasselblad) in the 'magical' digital darkroom that photoshop can be... does not often happen!I'm sure you'll let me know what you think? THE MODEL 1

From the series: People@work. Models need a portfolio and updates. This girl doesn't normally do nude photography and neither do I, but one of her agencies needed just a few chaste ones. This was a 'special', one for me, I'd been thinking about it (yes, one of my 'night-storms' again) After we finished her session, I told her my idea, and she liked it, I told her this was to be ' Creative Arty Photography', ahemmm! Taken on the Hasselblad, Zeiss 80 mm lens, and Ilford Delta 100 film and two big softboxes Just cropped off the bottom, because she was wearing panties. In answer to the usual questions, no, she was not lying down, gravity never helps (?_~), so I pinned up her hair against the background, she stood for over 2 hrs, at some point I asked her if she wanted a drink, with a twinkle in her eyes she thanked me, but, aaahh, the dreaded words: "she had to go for a wee?" No way was I going to unpin and repin all of that, plus the hair had to be the same in all the images, so we giggled to a solution, I got her a bucket and left the studio. What a spunky young woman, we're still laughing. AAAAHHH c'est dure la vie de modele! (life of a model... not easy!) LIKE A PORCELAIN DOLL...

SUPPORT the PHOTOGRAPHER: BUY DIRECT! I had to shoot the 'free' images fast... pure candids. Not long ago she discovered the joy of running... she loved the studio, tripped over cables, got entangled in the back-ground, refused to sit, hihi, let alone pose? She had a lot of fun, and at the end of the session... I WAS KNACKERED, AAhh the joys of being a photographer... lol, thanx, M, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS: http://www.indigo2photography.co.uk/magda-portfolio.htm IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) GREAT EXPECTATIONS…

#abfav_shadows_silhouettes_theme I was approached by someone who wanted something 'special'. For days I was agonising, racking my brain! I invited her around for a chat and a bite to eat, I noticed how, when left by herself or while I was in conversation with someone else, she looked down and hugged her belly. As I am very much a night person, I was inspired in the middle of the night, suddenly sat up in bed and had the PERFECT image in front of my mind's eye. I consider pregnancy a very beautiful natural event, but also private, so that's why she's in silhouette. Everybody who knows her, immediately recognises her profile. Prepared the studio and lights, with Paul's help, in she came, I gave her one of my Japanese house-kimonos, she took the pose with total ease. Took a couple of polaroids, to check the angle of the lights to perfection, then I took THE SHOT, not 2 or 3, no, just the ONE! Most people say, it's like she is looking into a 'crystal' ball, what will the future bring? It was a girl... Thank you, Magda. ON BECOMING A FATHER...

MY IMAGES ARE FOR SALE ONLY FROM ME, DIRECTLY, see below! It is much easier to become a father than to be one. — Kent Nerburn, Letters to My Son: Reflections on Becoming a Man, 1994 So tomorrow Fathers are going to be celebrated in many countries. I made a story of it... this is the beginning, often a joyous time in a couple's life. Towards the end of the nine months, patience is running a little thin, expectations are high. What's it gonna be? A BIG CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE!!! A commitment for life! magdaindigo.blogspot.co.uk/2009/01/importance-of-hands-in... Amitabh Bachchan,in BLACK and WHITE...

Amitabh Bachchan, THE BOLLYWOOD LEGEND Son of well known poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan.. The trademark deep baritone voice, the tall, brooding persona, and intense eyes, made Amitabh Bachchan the ideal "Angry Young Man" in the 1970s, thereby changing the face of Hindi cinema. He left films in 1985 to become a Member of Parliament from Allahabad constituency as a Congress party candidate, as a favour to his family friend Rajiv Gandhi - the new Prime Minister of India. He’s been awarded all over the world with prestigious titles and medals like the Legion d’Honneur. He presided over the ‘Bollywood Oscars’ in Dubai, that year it was held in Yorkshire, yes he was back in town! The first Asian actor having a wax model of his likeness displayed at Madame Tussaud's in London. Was named Actor of the Millennium in a BBC News Poll ahead of such luminaries as Charlie Chaplin, Sir Lawrence Olivier and Marlon Brando. Here he’s often called the Asian Sean Connery. (For more go to Amitabh Bachchan Wikipedia). He is also the most well known Indian together with Gandhi? It was a fantastic experience, professionalism optimum! We photographed the great man, the 'big B' as he is called… He allowed us to take portraits of him. It is indeed the height (1, 91) and elegance, the voice and the penetrating look that leaves a lasting impression of this extremely kind and distinguished gentleman. I saw a few hairs slightly over his eye and brow, walked up to him, gently put it back in place, we smiled at each other… Have a wonderful day and thanx, M (*_*) PS: Two soft boxes and a backlight with honeycomb. I only wanted some rim or edge light, but he moved his head, hence the highlight on his check, no matter...l loved the pose and intensity, took it... it is my personal favourite. You know how for me... IT IS OFTEN ABOUT THE EMOTION MUCH MORE THAN THE TECHNICAL PROWESS! THAT'S AMORE...

HAPPY VALENTINE www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeWVzT4s2Kw&feature=related for the music lovers...LOL magdaindigo.500px.livejournal. VALENTINE They had a kiss. An intimate moment,an expression of amorousness,a caress or touch with the lips. They got lost in their own new world, forgot we were there, just for a moment... I heard the butterflies flutter and remembered... The lights were in place, it was back to the real business. This was one of the 'unofficial' photographs, I showed them, yes, they thought they were fun, but also a bit embarrassing, however, this was not what they 'wanted', people often have a predilection when they come to a photo studio! It is EXTREMELY important to listen VERY carefully to your clients. They had come for a portrait, celebrating their engagement, that's what they went home with. I did take those images for myself anyway. BILL… for MOVEMBER

AB FAV for today… https://www.facebook.com/groups/1148438991917313/ Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's suicide. A retired policeman of the old kind, his name is Bill. What a character, so full of stories... He brewed his own beer On grainy 400 b&w film, white on white, OOOOHHH, I DO LIKE A CHALLENGE, lol!!!I took another image of 'his moustache', not a crop, it was used for the cover of a book. thanx for your time and comments, greatly appreciated, M, (*_*) And for more of my other work or if you want to purchase, visit here: www.indigo2photography.com IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) JEAN-MARIE DEDECKER...

For years I have been working on a project, mostly for a book, but it also became, at some stage, a wall of fame in a city... This was one of the images. Eyes are our soul mirrors in my view. For people to 'guess', recognise, you could ONLY see part of the face, mostly the eyes, the rest was different for different people, mostly something to do with their line of work, here the jūdōgi (judo uniform or suit). This here is Jean-Marie Dedecker became well-known first for his long career as a judoka then as a judo coach, with his judokas winning a for Belgium unprecedented number of medals (among them 4 times Olympian gold), and then for his common-sense approach to politics, he is a ' famous' Belgian politician now.. View On Black Some would say, a 'controversial' man, both interesting and 'impatient' in the studio, lol... Someone in Belgium saw an interview with him on TV and saw this portrait behind his desk! I am hoping for your understanding, I cannot possibly answer every comment nor reciprocate the courtesy, however I THANK you, always, for your visit and comments, M, (*_*) For more of my other work or if you want to purchase, visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) WHO IS THIS?

And today for something completely different, another one of my 'passions'... For years I have been working on a project, mostly for a book, but it also became, at some stage, a wall of fame in a city... This was one of the images. Eyes are our soul mirrors in my view. For people to 'guess', recognise, you could ONLY see part of the face, mostly the eyes, the rest was different for different people, mostly something to do with their line of work, here this is a wet fishmonger, who was also a well-known stand-up comic. He is holding a dried plaice, a very popular delicacy in his native Ostend in Belgium. MORE SOUL MIRRORS

My son is a very busy businessman, every day he's got to plan ahead and deal with unforeseen emergencies. The phone is his main tool. This was taken awhile back, he now has the latest... of course! I joined him in Amsterdam after my commissioned photography was done and sat there, across from him for nearly 2 hours. I enjoyed watching him, reminiscing, looking at that man, remembering the boy, the ups and downs, the joy and laughter, the tears... He sensed my reflective mood, being the sensitive guy that he is, asked if I was fine, yes, well nearly done, just a few more calls, some materials to order and I'm done... That's when I took this shot, he looked in my direction, busy but aware of me. For years I have been working on this project, mostly for a book, but it also became, at some stage, a wall of fame in a city... Eyes are our soul mirrors in my view. This was one of the earlier ones I did, for people to 'guess', recognise, you could ONLY see part of the face, mostly the eyes, the rest was different for different people, mostly something to do with their line of work... TOOLS OF THE TRADE...

Eyes are our soul mirrors in my view. The trial, done on the technical camera and developed and printed in the 'wet' darkroom. I'll upload some now and then... as they are not easy to scan. AAhh well, when I have some time, FUN! As a photographer, your main tools are: - you, as a person with a creative mind. - your eyes, using the visual literacy. - your camera, keep it in shipshape, handle it with the care and respect it deserves (even as a pro!!!). - the technical and practical knowledge you have acquired over the years! - try to insert some of your emotional bagage into your images, it is an imporant, often disguarded and forgotten ingredient in photography! Paul Indigo and my Hasselblad, his doesn't have the pentaprism, mine does because I'm not fond of the 'normal' Hasselblad reversed mirror view, LOL. I wish you all the best and THANX, M, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!) EYE TO EYE…

On the first day of the year, we decided to have a portrait session in the studio. It was some time ago since we took ‘proper' photo’s of each other. What better way to start the New Year? LOL Paul, my husband, yes still crazy after all these years, we see eye to eye on most topics. In photography we each have our own style and vision. We respect that, share a fine sense of humour which made this such a pleasurable experience. Transferred this into black and white, love grainy low res, used to be very much my ‘thang’, in the days of film! EYES… SOUL-MIRRORS…

#abfav_2_together_theme MAGDA INDIGO (*_*) A lighting exercise in the studio. This is a scan of a b/w Polaroid which gives you not just the instant image but also a 4x5 negative. This image is part of an ongoing photo book project on ‘soul mirrors.’ Like most people I don’t like to be photographed, why do you think I am 'behind' the camera? hihi. I feel that very few images 'capture' the real ‘ME’. That is why I so respect it when people say NO. That is why I understand their ‘fear’ and I’m able to put them at ease. I always prefer natural light, but studio light has its advantages, anytime, anywhere… This was taken late at night, I had already tried quite a few different set-ups, wanted something different, this IS the one. Camera used: Techn Cam 4x5 Lens used: Rodenstock 180 Film used: Polaroid 55 pro neg. 4x5 The frame is natural, from the torn-off Polaroid paper. SOUL MIRRORS...

WHO'S THAT GIRL? For years I have been working on a project, mostly for a book, but it became at some stage a wall of fame in a city... Eyes are our soul mirrors in my view. This was a model and one of the first I did. She wore one of my jackets in organza, with a big collar. Comp in camera. MASQUERADE...

“A cultivated style would be like a mask. Everybody knows it's a mask, and sooner or later you must show yourself -- or at least, you show yourself as someone who could not afford to show himself, and so created something to hide behind. You do not create a style. You work, and develop yourself; your style is an emanation from your own being.” Katherine Anne Porter "Earlier on in my career I felt that I had to hide behind a lot of different masks, and showboat ways of performing. Now, that's a lie. The less I have to hide, the less I have to act." Thomas Jane 2 quotes on the matter that appealed to me. In many cultural traditions the masked performer is a central concept and is highly valued. In the western tradition it is sometimes considered a stylistic device which can be traced back to the Greeks and Romans. Scanned from a Polaroid 4x5" taken on Horseman, technical camera and cropped into a square. THE WACKY BIRD...

I don't really 'do' birds... but for all those bird- and wild life photographers, this is the strangest bird I've ever come across. Lovely colourful plumage, penetrating eyes, large bill, loves chocolate, seafood and white wine. Rather timid... Feels in it's element close to and on water, loves to deep dive. Moves in pairs, one partner, prefers colder climes and wind, loves to fly and spread its wings... Scanned from a Polaroid 4x5" taken on Horseman, technical camera. THE VET and HIS PATIENT...

We had a beautiful and wonderful Border-Collie for 16 years. Brought him over from the Continent when the 6 month quarantine law was still in place. He came through it with flying colours! Here, he was 15... thinking he was still 5! He looked young and behaved young, but time catches up, he got ill, had a tumour, luckily, we also had a fantastic vet, who knew our dog well, and agreed it was worth while to go ahead and have the operation. It would prolong his life with QUALITY, it was all we wanted! I was present during the operation and recorded (photographed) many after that, on cats, dogs and other animals... he was a magician... This was a few days after, look at his tail... PLEASE, BEST LARGE and View On proper Black There was a slight problem still and the vet could not stop himself from racking his brain on how to best solve it... These two had a good relationship, they liked and respected each other! Our dear friend lived a good year longer, and then... R.I.P 16-12-2005 AND STILL missing him badly... what a star! This was taken with my Nikon F4 and on film, it was an in-between shot, the light not quite right yet but I've always loved it for the emotions I captured, so important! DEFINITION... CHRISTIAN DEDEENE... THE DANCER...

He was for 5 years a solo and star dancer with one of the greatest choreographers of the century, Maurice Bejart. I was fortunate to have him in our studio a couple of times, and what an experience it was, each time. Thanks Christian, for being so patient and sharing my artistic vision. I love dramatic lighting, especially for this kind of subject. magdaindigo.blogspot.com/2008/01/all-shades-of-grey.html Thank you, M, (*_*) For more of my other work visit here: www.indigo2photography.co.uk IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN (BY LAW!!!)
