FLORETTES de FLEURS… Scabiosa

FLOWERS IN FLOWERS In the ‘heart’ of Scabiosa, there is a pincushion-like center, filled with little bals… they open one by one. Each head contains many small florets, each floret cupped in a membranous, saucer-shaped bract. The calyx has five sepals in the form of awns almost as long as the petals. After the flowers have dropped, the calyces together with the bracts form a spiky ball that may be the reason for the "pincushion" common name. Scabious flowers are nectar rich and attractive to many insects including butterflies and moths. Scabiosa is a genus in the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae) of flowering plants To me, this is one of the most ‘feminine’ flowers. Another common name for members of this genus is pincushion flowers. Scabious flowers are nectar rich and attractive to many insects, including butterflies and moths such as the Six-spot Burnet. SPLENDOUR in BLUE, Scabiosa

Lovely, lavender blue, pincushion like flowers from July to September held on delicate stems above clumps of lance shaped, grey green leaves. This long flowering blue scabious is ideal for a sunny, well drained rock garden or container planting. The charming pincushion like flowers are highly attractive to butterflies and they make very pretty additions to fresh and dried flower arrangements. Hope you like it, thank you and have a happy day, Magda, (*_*) Please do not use this image on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit permission. © All rights reserved For more of my other work or if you want to PURCHASE (ONLY PLACE TO BUY MY IMAGES!), VIEW THE NEW PORTFOLIOS AND LATEST NEWS HERE on our website: www.indigo2photography.com

PERFECT COMBINATION… Roses

And Scabiosa. “I have no plans to retire. It's the perfect combination of work and play that keeps you young. If I quit work it would be the beginning of the end for me.” Hugh Hefner I think, in food, fashion, art and other things, the secret is in the combination! Such a lovely combination of colours, shape and textures. FEMININITY… Scabiosa

I said it before, I think Scabiosa is a very feminine flower, well here you get three from me; Each floret is composed of tightly packed, button-shaped, nectar rich centres which up close have charming dancing stamens, which coat pollen over visiting bees and butterflies. Each flat flower is beautifully skirted in large outer florets and collared by reflexed vegetative bracts. If regularly deadheaded, they continue into October and last two weeks in the vase. I love what I’am doing and look forward to another week of finished images, to add to the vast collection. I am addicted to the final thrill… each time, when I press save, for the last time! MONDAY BLUES? Scabiosa…

Not me! I love what I’am doing and look forward to another week of finished images, to add to the vast collection. I am addicted to the final thrill… each time, when I press save, for the last time! I said it before, I think Scabiosa is a very feminine flower, well here you get a full bouquet from me; Each floret is composed of tightly packed, button-shaped, nectar rich centres which up close have charming dancing stamens, which coat pollen over visiting bees and butterflies. OH SO BEAUTIFUL… Scabiosa

These flowers, which were splendid and sprightly, waking in the dawn of the morning, in the evening will be a pitiful frivolity, sleeping in the cold night's arms. Pedro Calderon de la Barca Last year’s Summer, I brought some stunning Scabiosa into the studio, made some photographs, it was Summer, it was hot, they did not last long, dried up nicely. I kept them, because I wanted to photograph them again. I had this image in my head, fresh and dried, old and new. I keep saying how patience is a big virtue in a photographer? The dried ones became very fragile, however they made it for the shoot. So, come this Summer, and I bought fresh ones, made my photo’s once more, phew, hot again in the studio, so the fresh ones did not last very long, started to shrivel-> more images to be made. Here they are, not quite dry yet, but oh so beautiful and interesting. Lavender blue Scabiosa, beautifully frilled, a genus in the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae). Another common name for members of this genus is pincushion flowers. Scabious flowers are nectar rich and attractive to many insects, including butterflies and moths such as the Six-spot Burnet. THE OLD and THE NEW… SCABIOSA

THE OLD and THE NEW… SCABIOSA From June masses of pin-cushion flowers emerge on slender erect stems. Each floret is composed of tightly packed, button-shaped, nectar rich centres which up close have charming dancing stamens, which coat pollen over visiting bees and butterflies. Each flat flower is beautifully skirted in large outer florets and collared by reflexed vegetative bracts. If regularly deadheaded, they continue into October and last two weeks in the vase. A Scabiosa, dried, beautiful… another of my favourite images, and, I have made a few. It is last year’s, I wrapped and stored them, they are extremely delicate, but I did manage to get some great photos out of them, together with the new ones this year, so more to come in this series. An idea I had for over a year now, yes, Photography is often a matter of PATIENCE!
