ALLURING… ORCHID

Cypripedium calceolus is a lady's-slipper orchid. For nearly four centuries, gardeners and botanists have collected the species to near extinction: as early as 1629 – when the species was first documented by botanists – it was being collected for gardens, and such the uprooting has continued ever since. By the second half of the twentieth century, just a single plant survived in a secret site, following the loss of a second population near Leyburn that fell prey to collectors as late as 1956. Only recently has the species' fortunes in Britain been reversed, following an introduction programme that has planted out cultivated seedlings in as many as 16 sites in a girdle across northern England, from Morecambe Bay to the Durham shores. THE ROYAL ONE, ORCHID…

A study in the scientific journal Nature has hypothesised that the origin of orchids goes back much longer than originally expected. An extinct species of stingless bee, Proplebeia dominicana, was found trapped in Miocene amber from about 15-20 million years ago. The bee was carrying pollen of a previously unknown orchid taxon, Meliorchis caribea, on its wings. T his find is the first evidence of fossilised orchids to date and shows insects were active pollinators of orchids then. According to Mark W. Chase et al. (2001), the overall biogeography and phylogenetic patterns of Orchidaceae show they are even older and may go back roughly 100 million years. Using the molecular clock method, it was possible to determine the age of the major branches of the orchid family. This also confirmed that the subfamily Vanilloideae is a branch at the basal dichotomy of the monandrous orchids, and must have evolved very early in the evolution of the family. Since this subfamily occurs worldwide in tropical and subtropical regions, from tropical America to tropical Asia, New Guinea and West Africa, and the continents began to split about 100 million years ago, significant biotic exchange must have occurred after this split (since the age of Vanilla is estimated at 60 to 70 million years). Orchids have symbolised different things to many cultures throughout the ages, but today they represent luxury, maturity, charm, thoughtfulness, and refinement. Purple Orchid meaning: there is grace and class exuded by this flower. It is considered to be the ROYAL one! MORE IMPERIALS… ORCHIDS

MARCH—> month of HOPE, beauty and joy. Blooms and buds, for hope and awakening. Purple was the colour worn by Roman magistrates; it became the imperial colour worn by the rulers of the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, and later by Roman Catholic bishops. Similarly in Japan, the color is traditionally associated with the Emperor and aristocracy. Phalaenopsis Orchid, known as the Moth Orchid, abbreviated Phal in the horticultural trade, is an orchid genus of approximately 60 species. Phalaenopsis is one of the most popular orchids in the trade, through the development of many artificial hybrids. It is native to southern China, the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia (Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.), New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and Queensland. They bloom in their full glory for several weeks. If kept in the home, the flowers may last two to three months. CAUGHT in the LIGHT... ORCHIDS

These were 'first-timers' in front of the camera, you can ALWAYS tell, LOL. Stage fright or performance anxiety is the anxiety, fear, or persistent phobia which may be aroused in an individual by the requirement to perform in front of an audience, whether actually or potentially (for example, when performing before a camera). In the context of public speaking, this may precede or accompany participation in any activity involving public self-presentation. In some cases stage fright may be a part of a larger pattern of social phobia or social anxiety disorder, but many people experience stage fright without any wider problems. Quite often, stage fright arises in a mere anticipation of a performance, often a long time ahead. It has numerous manifestations: fluttering or pounding heart, tremor in the hands and legs, sweaty hands, facial nerve tics, dry mouth, erectile dysfunction and dizziness. RARE BEAUTY... ORCHIDS for CHRISTMAS

"Rare is the union of beauty and purity." Quote by Juvenal Orchids are truly flowers of superlatives. No plant family has as many different flowers as the orchid family. Orchids are among the most highly prized of ornamental plants. In Mexico the flowers are used symbolically by the natives; each one conveys a sentiment associated with different ceremonies or religious figures. From the time that orchids were first imported from the Bahamas to Britain (in the early 18th cent.) these flowers have been cultivated for their commercial value and have been successfully hybridized and variegated. Hawaii has become a major center for commercial orchid culture. A species of the Vanilla genus of tropical America is important economically as the source of natural vanilla flavouring.
